I've recently stumbled into a huge collection of d100 randomizer tables, and I noticed that I love having these on hand. I feel like they inspire me so much, and I immediately start to come up with cool encounters, traps, stories or artifacts.
However, for some reason, I never really use them when session prep actually comes along, and the name tables never make it into my actual session ressources, because I find the slow me down way to much. Finding the right table, rolling the dice, looking the result up. It's not a ton of work but just enough to throw me off my game when DMing.
So I though up a solution to the problem, and this is where my question comes in.
I am a software dev by trade, so the idea to code my own solution to this was not too far off. I started developing a d100 randomizer tool and called it ShiftSpace. (currently macOS only, but others will follow if it turns out that people actually use this)
I would love to hear from you, if you would use something like this! I don't want to invest another 80 hours of development time, just to find out that people wouldn't use it. ;) I just released the first public beta yesterday and would love to give it into your hands to try out and give feedback.
Please don't hold back, the good or the bad. I'm extremely curious to see what you think about it!
I do indeed love random tables. I currently have a D600 table I am making for a single magic item. I have a D300 table for magical gems, which I am very pleased with (I found over 270 real gems, and filled the blanks with coloured glass). Random tables are most excellent.
I feel like they inspire me so much, and I immediately start to come up with cool encounters, traps, stories or artifacts.
These things always provide plenty of sparks of inspiration for me, but they also invariably contain lots of "duds" too. I don't want to roll in-session and be disappointed in what I got, or find myself rerolling several times to find something I like.
Perhaps you could have a filter feature that could allow the user to build their own pool and then just pull from those selections. That would go beyond just increased convenience into the realm of stuff the printed tables just can't do.
Oh damn D600 table, that's a commitment. :D I've done something similar for wild magic, since I have a wild magic sorceress in my group. I fell you. :D
Yeah that's true. Sometimes you're just looking for something somewhat specific, and the results don't always match. That's actually part of why I'm developing the tool, since you can easily reroll in case something doesn't feel right.
So what you're saying is you'd wish for something like custom tables? Essentially building your own tables and integrating them into the app?
I actually just released the beta, so if you're on macOS you can already try it out if you want. :) If you're on PC or mobile, you can signup for the newsletter (or the discord). I'll let you know when it's ready in case I do produce it. :)
As for adding custom tables, seems like people would appreciate that a lot, so I might add that as the first big feature request.

This is really incredibly cool! And it’s beautiful so far!
Just wondering though, would people be able to add d100 tables on there?
Dang this would be so sick if you did produce it!
@Bybyroro
Thanks dude!
Love then enthusiasm 😍
