I've DM'd a very long time and I'm one of those guys that suffers from never being organized enough. As a result, this thread won't end my eternal quest for improved notes, but...
I've been drifting further away from extensive documentation and my own personal sourcebooks for my settings or ongoing campaigns, and towards much more condensed bullet points. I've definitely noticed it's easier to run. I've been mostly electronic for a while, but I'm flirting with the idea converting back to paper in the form of 3x5 index cards, even though I'm mostly online these days.
Just curious if anyone else wants to share their best practices?
I use WorldAnvil to draft and link, but day to day game stuff resides in my composition books. If I feel the need to add it to the WA, then I draft an article.
I am also terrible at keeping notes. I mainly use either the Campaign DM private notes or notepad .txt files for taking note of things during a session.
I have heard positive things about One-Note and Obsidian Portal though.
Between sessions, I just use a typical spiral notebook and pencil. In session, I've started recording all sessions. Makes it so nice to go back and watch/remember things that have happened. I give players a link too so they can remember as well.

I DM with a laptop in front of me among other things. I arrange my notes via Google Drive, making folders for everything to keep them organised:
During the game, I usually make written notes and afterwards I transfer anything that's important into my permanent notes after the session.
Between sessions, I just use a typical spiral notebook and pencil. In session, I've started recording all sessions. Makes it so nice to go back and watch/remember things that have happened. I give players a link too so they can remember as well.
