First off, this is going to be the last of my paint threads. Maybe. I think. Anyway, I'm invsting in a good set of Vallejo Game Color paints for my minis, and I've got a few questions:
First, they have a lot of metalic paints. Which one is the best for standard shiny armor?
Second, which is the best dark wash?
Third, do they have any sets that are cheaper then the Starter Set? (it costs $99!)
Fourth, should I get the extra opaques or just the standard colors? I like paints that go on in one coat, so I'm leaning towards extra opaque.
Fifth, I'm a really simple painter. No glazes, layering, and all the rest of it. I just do a basecoat, a dark wash, and some drybrushing if there's anything worth drybrushing. So, my question is, will the extra opaques work for drybrushing too?
Sixth, which is the best Vallejo primer?
Seventh, does Vallejo have an extra opaque white paint? I can't seem to find one, but that might just be me.
Most common metalic you'll find is silver, like steel. Just make sure you have brushes and cleaning water specifically for metalic paints, otherwise if you use the same brush then your other non-metalic paints will have traces of metalic in them, making that cloth part of the mini have a weird shiny speckle.
For washes, I always find a brown wash to be usable on anything 99% of the time. The only time I ventured out of a brown wash was when I was using one on blue, purple and pink bags, and for that I used a blue wash. You can always thin down washes even more if you want to to be lighter, or apply mutliple layers for deeper colours.
Haven't got advice for the third question.
I would avoid only ever using one coat for minis. Two thin coats is the minimum for best results IMO. The method of thinning your paints and using at least two coats makes the distribution and transition smoother as well as a reduced risk of clogging up any details.
I second the brushes tip. And also, don’t cheap out on the brushes — a good one is worth the money. Good brushes and patience are really the two things you need most for painting minis.
I like Vallejo, but I think I prefer Army painter, both are cheaper than Citadel, but a lot of online guides reference Citadel and they have a cool phone App
1. I use gunmetal, with a black wash and silver highlights usually
2. Very much prefer the Citadel washes - Nuln Oil for Blackish, and Agrax earthshade for dark brown.
3. Unsure,
4. I dont think the extra opaques make any difference, I usually thin quite a bit.
6. I use mostly the Vallejo black, it seems to work better than white. Sometimes I mix to get a grey though.
7. Unsure.

5. Extra Opaques should work fine for drybrushing.
