Hey guys, I had an idea for my campaign, but I need some advice on if it could work and, if not, how to modify it. First, here's a bit of background information:
I'm running the wonderful Fishing for Gods in Strade's Gallows, which takes place in a swamp filled with kuo-toa. The kuo-toa worship a player in the party, causing them to mutate thanks to the kuo-toan's insane divine magic. This week, not everyone can make it so I want to do a sort of side quest.
So far, my idea is to have the party have to use an Apparatus of Kwalish to dive deep into the swamp until they reach the Underdark. I know this is a legendary item, but would it be okay to allow a party of 3rd-level players use it for just one session without modification, or should I change some of its features to weaken it (could claim that the swamp has damaged it)?
As a hook, I was considering having some kuo-toa find the player they worship and take them to the Apparatus. Some of the player's worshipers have dissented and started worshiping this submarine, causing it to be animated by their magic... and trapping the pilot inside! After they fight the Apparatus and free its pilot, the pilot could send them on the quest of the session.

Despite being a legendary item, it's not really meant for combat and only has practical uses in very specific places. I wouldn't worry so much about it being overpowered or throwing the campaign through a loop even if they did keep the thing.

I don't see an immediate issue as long as the apparatus does not stay with the party after this session.
