My party has split into two with one group staying a little longer in the forest and another already continuing onto towards the city.
the group that is going towards the city is going to see a hill giant chasing some boar across a field kind of as a dumb joyful child. It will be far away from them and they will only notice because of its size. The other group, the one that stays in the forest, is going to encounter the same hill giant's home. Which is a wide cave room.
This hill giant in particullar is a creature that will, in the future, possibly play a role in the story. A party member recently got a diary of someone who was hunting down strong magical artifacts and other magical items. Once the party reads this diary they might want to go after these items. This hill giant is the owner of one of the lesser items, a crown to be specific. The appearance of this hill giant will kind of be a teaser and I think it will be a cool callback if they decide to, eventually, look him up again.
My question is, what will the group that stays in the forest, encounter if they go into the cave. What does this hill giant's home look like and what could they find here. The Hill giant has a comically large backpack in which he keeps most of his stuff (just like in the wizkids miniature) and this is where the item is in also. The group that goes onto the city will notice this about him.
The hill giant’s dire wolf hunting companion could be in the cave. Maybe with a litter of cubs?
I can see a very crude cave since they’re brutes and aren’t very smart. A bed that’s a few logs rolled together in the back of the cave with some half cured/half rotting hides from different animals on it as a mattress. A stolen and rusty iron pot or pan that’s used to drink out of. A shelf that’s out of reach of the PCs, but is at hill giant height with some odds and ends, including a semi fresh animal carcass, that aren’t valuable enough to keep in its sack that it carries with it. I’m not sure if they’re smart enough to have a fire, and if they are I doubt that they’re smart enough to have a fire pit. That should do it.
There are already 2 published Hill Giant Lairs in 5e, but they are for multiple giants in the same base. They're in Against the Giants from Tales from the Yawining Portal and Storm King's Thunder has another base. You could take inspiration from this. It could be like a log cabin, but with giant tree trunks, and 5 times the size of a normal log cabin in all dimensions.

Any ideas?

You could have a stack of bone tools, an animal hide for a door, or maybe some cave paintings the giant made.
OOoh i like the cave painting idea. Thats a good one, ill steal that.

I’m glad I could help! In the first chapter of Storm King’s Thunder, there is a “giant’s bag” table that you could use for furnishing ideas.
