I'm looking to create a magic weapon for one of my players that is a halfling barbarian.
While looking through the DM's guide I came across the tables at page 142-143. Here one of the tables lists the 'creator' of the weapon, one of these is a Celestial.
It reads: "Celestial. The weapon is half the normal weight and inscribed with feathered wings, suns and other symbols of good. Fiends find the item's presence repulsive.
I was wondering if I made a custom magic weapon for my player celestial, would they, as a small creature, be able to use a full-size celestial weapon without disadvantage because of the halved weight? What would your ruling be on this?
Does that weapon still have the Heavy property? If not, then there should be no problem. If it does still have the Heavy property, then it would still grant disadvantage on the attack.
It does not specifically say it removes heavy. However, looking at the weapon table, a greataxe with celestial or elven make would be 3.5 lbs instead of 7, which is less than a quarterstaff or mace, which are regular weapons and have a weight of 4lbs (simply for reference). The only thing I personally see that makes me doubt is the actual size of the weapon.
It's reasonable enough to have a magic weapon that removes the Heavy property (or adds the Light property), but consider increasing rarity, requiring attunement, giving it compensating flaws, or something similar (one simple option: reduce damage as well as weight). As written, Celestial, Dragon, Elemental Air, and Elvish are straight up advantages, Drow is a mix but probably on balance a disadvantage, the rest are largely neutral.
