Was the bookworm ever in a monster manual from previous editions? (5e is the first edition I've played. Only been playing a couple years, most of it DMing for my brother and his kids.)
Yes, it was originally introduced in Monster Manual II (1983) but doesn't seem to have made it into 3rd edition or later.
Thanks! Gonna see if that MM is on DM's guild.
It most likely is. Probably the Monstrous Compendium Annual V3 in which the Tome Guardian appeared is there too. I’m honestly not sure though. Since I have my old books to hand, I never checked the Guild.

Found it in monster manual II (1e). MM II (3e) didn't have it or the tome guardian. Back to DM's guild to look for more. Adding more to my arsenal of beasties the 10yo nephew won't have read about. (He informed me a few weeks back that he's read the current MM at least 5 times.)

2e and 3e are absolutely goldmines full of vast amounts of stuff hat will all seam completely brand new amazing.
There are other monsters disguised as objects beside the mimic: Cloaker, Animated Table, Rug of Smothering.
Interesting spells that can be cast on objects to trigger a delayed effect include Magic Mouth, Glyph of Warding, Illusory Script, Imprisonment, Symbol.
