So I'm trying to create a versatile homebrew weapon. The idea is originally a magical multi kitchen utensil, able to change into any handheld/ hand operated tool (Knives, Spatulas, Zesters, Graters, Citrus Juicers, Cheese Slicers, Tenderizers, Forks, Spoons, Ladles, ETC); both regular sized and--near comical--weapon sized. Certain forms have certain types of damage or conditions.
Ex: Sharp utensils would cause slashing or piercing damage. Dull utensils (spoons, ladles, tenderizers) would cause bludgeoning damage. Forms that of a nut or crab shell crackers could cause crushing damage and maybe function as a grapple/restraint.
This in mind, I fear I've come up with something, while fun and potentially useful, that may too complex or out of rules gameplay to actually use.
Or maybe I need to create multiple homebrews attached for each of it's forms? I'm rather new to this and I just want to get this right...
I would appreciate some feedback, advice and ideas.
Make it easy on yourself. have the item scale with its user. at level 1 it does 1d6 damage no matter the form of weapon. if ranged it requires the ammunition. at level 5, it is a 1d8 weapon. level 11, 1d10. and level 17, 1d12. give it the light property.

There is no way to program that. The system isn’t designed for it since the officially published magic items are designed to be agnostic of stuff like character level. Even stuff like the quasi-official Vestiges of Divergence had to be programmed as individual items those scale on their own without pulling from PC stats. 🤷♂️
There is an officially published item with a Kinda sorta similar feature called the Rod of Lordly Might. The first three buttons change weapons, but the system doesn’t handle that kind of temporary effect yet, so people just add those items to their character sheets when they need them. You could do something similar and then players could just use actual weapons to represent the different shapes, but they count as magic weapons for the purpose of overcoming damage resistance. And as for supersizing, borrow from enlarge/reduce and add an extra 1d4 damage for the bigguns. That was my first thought at least.

You'd have to just put it in plain text.
"Sooner or later, your Players are going to smash your railroad into a sandbox."
-Vedexent
"real life is a super high CR."

"............anybody got any potatoes? We could drop a potato in each hole an' see which ones get viciously mauled by horrible monsters?"
