So while the title mostly details it - Let me explain.
After rummaging trough a metric ton of posts; only to find the obscure comment actually TRYING to explain it here and there - I am still stuck at not really knowing how the "character levels where options known" and I would very much appreciate it if I could get a elongated explanation on it as the short explanation given just makes me confused.
it says that by doing "3,3,5,7,11" I get to choose two options at level 3, one at level 5, etc... How. Why. In what world does this make sense?
I have understood that by just entering 1,1 - You get to pick two options at level 1. But even that confuses me. How does 1,1 = two options at level 1? And how would I go on to make it be "One option at level 1" instead of "Two options at level 1"
I tok me forever to figure out just how to make the "Dropdown" list in order to give my Homebrew races the "Options" to choose between different proficiencies at level 1 (And even then it looks bad since that option requires you to have a description and snippet so it looks so messy when you select the race in the character creator and select the given options) but even then I just don't get that "Character levels where options known" system. I just want to be able to have it be "Choose one proficiency at level 1"
If you have options for a feature, this field tells the builder at what levels to allow you to pick options.
S0 if you have 2,2, 6 in this field, It lets you pick 2 options at 2nd level, and 1 at 6th.
To make one option at level 1, you just put 1.
It's a simple system you just put a comma-separated list of the levels you want options at, with multiple of the same level to give more then one at that level. Which it will also tell you if you hover the question mark next to it.
“1,1” gives two options at 1st level because it gives “one option at level 1, and another option at level 1.”
If it lists “1,1,5,7,11” then it gives “one option at level 1, another option at level 1, one option at level 5, one option at level 7, and one option at level 11.”
So, to change two options at 1st level (“1,1”) to one option at first level, all you have to do is list “1” all by itself. One single option at 5th-level would be presented as “5” all by itself. Two options at 5th-level would be present sed as “5,5” like that.
I explained Options in greater detail in these posts, but the whole “granted options” thing seems to not work correctly for races, only for subclasses:
Also, you don’t actually need to include a snippet for a trait or feature, that ou can leave the snippet field blank and just let the snippet for the option do the job instead.
PS- If you only want them to pick one proficience at 1st level you don’t need any options, just one modifier:
Alright, thank you so much to the both of you - It may be that my head is screwed on backwards but because of what 1,1 meant - It just flew past me that nothing meant 1 option. In my head that you got one option at 3 and 5 (By the explanation) had something to do with that 1 at the beginning which just did not add up to me. But allright, good to know that it was just me being a Cro-Magnon about it. I finally got the list working the way I wanted to now on one of my homebrew races!
The system isn’t really very intuitive, simple, but not intuitive. As long as it’s working. By the way, if you leave that field complex blank on a homebrewed race/variant/subrace, it will automatically default to “1 choice at character creation.”
PS- “Hovering the question mark” doesn’t work on mobile devices, so if you use a phone or tablet (like I do), and that wasn’t working for you either, that’s why. In that case you either have to figure it out for yourself, or use an actual computer to learn the system, and then just remember it all. It really isn’t so bad, it’s kinda like the homebrewing equivalent of assembling your own furniture from Ikea.
