So I'm relatively new to D&D - been listening to gameplay D&D podcast for the last two or three years now. Finally got some friends to agree to play with me and we've done a basic game playing the sunless citadel (i was a player). This time I'm DMing and I have plans to homebrew. Am I crazy?
I've put so much thought into my world, made a world map and map of the town you start in. Written my session one notes and I think I'm ready but have started wondering if I've over prepped leaving no room for my players to be creative or if I've missed something obvious. Advice please? Anyone willing to read through (I'll provide a link if requested) and give me their thoughts?
you sound like you have this all really well prepared. but i think as long as you give serious thought to your homebrew world and homebrew then really there is no crazy. and hey ask for help in the dm only forum. there are lots of people there who are more than willing to tell you about homebrew items, monsters, npc's, bbeg's, quests and stuff like that. myself included. dnd is a good game and we always need more dms so it's a no brainer that as a community we are here to help eachother out. after all without dm's there is no dnd
and now i will as i always do with new dms. refer you to captain cold
Make the plan.
Execute the plan.
Expect the plan to go off rails.
Forget the plan.
Always having plans is good but make them loose fitting so that way you can also encourage player creativity as well as your own creativity. As a homebrew dm it is important to always be good or at least decent with improv (fancy way of saying making stuff up as you go) because you don't have anything but yourself to fall back too if the players do something bat shit crazy. like make a gelatinous cube catapult.
I've tried to be loose i've sent you my notes so see what you think! I'm very much expecting the plan to go off the rails but thats why i want to DM :'D
