I would like to know how to format my homebrew race with 2 versions of them- They're been showing up as separate races contrary to the formats like the elf race and their varients
I've tried to put the two as both varients and subraces but still have this problem - thank you for any help possible :)
Try Subrace instead of variant make the base race first but don't add the subraces features meaning the features where there is a difference in the main base race, then click has subrace than create subrace then go to the subrace created and add the subrace features there.
Unfortunately variants and sub-races of our own custom parent races will not appear as a nice neat grouping in the character builder; if you make a variant of an official race it should, but a fully custom race won't.
I've recently switched to creating sub-races by adding them as options to the parent race. This keeps everything grouped together under a single entry, and the sub-races will appear as an option in the character builder. If you structure everything right it should still look correct on the details page, and still be easy to select the sub-race you want. If you're interested in that method I made a guide describing how I do it.
I find this method easier especially for races that I intend to release publicly, as updating a parent race with sub-races otherwise requires you to recreate each sub-race, and your homebrew section will become a giant unfixable mess. So yeah… there's a reason I like the options method. 😉
Former D&D Beyond Customer of six years: With the axing of piecemeal purchasing, lack of meaningful development, and toxic moderation the site isn't worth paying for anymore. I remain a free user only until my groups are done migrating from DDB, and if necessary D&D, after which I'm done. There are better systems owned by better companies out there.
I have unsubscribed from all topics and will not reply to messages. My homebrew is now 100% unsupported.
