The poll is a choice between two options for scoring the COTFB, to make sure everyone is on the same page.
When you vote, you should consider that the purpose of the competition is to inspire people to make great homebrew, and that there is no tangible prize.
OPTION 1:
The overall winner is the one with the most winning entries, or the highest single score if tied, and then the highest total score if tied again (IE if 2 participants have 1 win with the same score in 2 categories, whoever got the highest total between their up-to-3 entries wins, meaning more entries will help tip a tiebreaker).
IE, more winning entries > highest single score > highest total score.
OPTION 2:
The overall winner is the one with the single highest score, and highest total score if tied (see above). Winning multiple categories does not beat a higher single score.
IE highest single score > highest total score > more winning entries (though more winning entries will almost always win highest total score for a tiebreaker).
Same for both options: The overall winner discusses the themes with the winners of each category and then makes the next thread. The winner of each category picks the next theme and cannot compete in that category. Given the concerns over vote manipulation, the winner of each category also makes the poll for that category and posts it into the thread.
Think about it and then cast your vote. Discussions for the pro's and cons of each start here in the last COTFB thread, and can be picked back up on here. Keep it civil, and respect each others decisions.
Poll will be up for a week (because we want to get back to having the ocmpetition!) and then we'll all move forward together!
I reckon CotFB ought to be cancelled. I mean, it is now swamped by toxic people and poll-riggers. Also note that giving rewards as suggested incentivizes this behavior and as such likely the competition will only get worse.
I reckon CotFB ought to be cancelled. I mean, it is now swamped by toxic people and poll-riggers. Also note that giving rewards as suggested incentivizes this behavior and as such likely the competition will only get worse.
Curious what you mean about giving rewards incentivising it?
The proposition of each winner picking the next category was to A: ensure that a different winner picks the next category and B: ensure that nobody has to sit out of the whole next competition.
Any "toxicity" I saw was due to the rules being a bit unclear (as the competition started out to be non-serious fun, so didn't really need strict rules), not from people who are inherently toxic. I certainly wouldn't say we're swamped with toxic people, though the poll rigging/trolling did seem to be a bit of an issue!
Perhaps we need to change the voting process entirely, so it's more than just a tickbox excercise - make peope submit a one-line review for each one, with the score out of 5 written into it. That way the person who's organising the poll for the category will need to quickly read through and see which scores actually sound like they are genuine (IE discounting anything that just says "like it" or "don't like it" and counting ones which say a bit more).
Or, we change the competition and make it a competition about which category can get the most homebrew entries. That way if someone wants to troll/rig a vote, they need to make more homebrew, and more homebrew is better!

If there's a reward for winning you want to win more.

Rewards incentivize people to participate as well.
Maybe renaming it from 'Competition' to 'Convention' would eliminate some toxicity, as in my experience, competition breeds more toxicity than anything but money (which is doubly true for competitions with a monetary reward).
An alternate judging criteria could also be implemented. Instead of a competition where everyone submits their homebrew and then votes on what's best, people could vote in different voting categories (as 'best' is very vague and subjective). Some examples:
Best Flavor
Best Written (closest to D&D 5e diction and highest readability)
Best Lore (different from flavor as flavor doesn't necessarily need a story behind it)
Most creative (or most out of the box)
Most balanced
Most wanted
Most likely to see play
There are plenty of others that could be included, even gag categories, which would make the whole event more about the homebrew and less about the competition. This would also work wonderfully with option 1 in the poll.

This is a wonderful idea. We could have each person who wishes to vote, instead of "ranking" each entry, choose their personal opinion on all of these different categories.
However, I'm torn between really wanting to implement it and also feeling like we shouldn't. It's so different than what we had and to be honest I kinda like the competition aspect of it. I do think we should defiantly move towards this direction, but I'm not sure if we want to go that extreme. I'm not sure what everyone else thinks, but I personally am for trying to create a less competitive vibe and more of a peaceful friendly homebrew creation thread, with some competition for fun on the side. Returning to what I said earlier though, I want to preserve some aspect of composition. If people want to create something that's purely just writing prompt/challenge, that sounds great but also should be a different thread.
At this point I'm just going in circles. What does everyone else think?
I joined the competition to have fun and share my creations and also to get feedback on them so I can improve. I think the suggestion I posed allows people who win these smaller voting categories to see what they're doing right, and more importantly, what they can learn from other creators to improve the quality of their homebrew.
I'm also a huge fan of ThorukDuckSlayer's idea for voters posting their responses with their rankings for peoples brews. With my suggestion, however, I think it would become a nomination system rather than a best out of 5 voting system that we have now. For example, if someone entered a brew that people thought was really balanced, those people would state in their response "I really liked [x] entry because of [y] reason. I'm voting for this option for the most balanced category"
It's also possible with this system to have only one theme for the homebrew and participants could enter any type of homebrew for the theme (IE. DM, Player, and Inspirational options all fall under the same theme now and everyone enters only one homebrew per competition). I know we wouldn't get the same volume of homebrew this way, but there would be far less arguing about who should win if the categories were relegated to voting rather than submissions.
Just suggestions. I've had a lot of time to think about it since I'm sick at home.

Same.

That makes sense, and I think it makes sense to have at least some element of this. We could also do something where we rank ideas from 1-5 for balance, flavor, and whatever other categories or elements or whatever we want to consider, for a total of being out of 5*the number of categories. We could even have different weights for each category if we wanted, so like maybe flavor is out of 5 but best written is out of 3 or something like that.

I really like that actually. I guess the only problem is we'd want a large voter base for a system like this to work. Otherwise not everyone would get much feedback, and there would be fer to many ties. But we got like 15 voters last competition, so this might work.

Just suggestions. I've had a lot of time to think about it since I'm sick at home.
I specifically avoided the first 7 competitions specifically because they are competitive. The competitive nature of it was more of a dissuasion than an incentive for me. I much preferred the non-competitive Homebrew Monday forum thread much more appealing while it was running. I only joined that last competition because I was a little bored and found the PC option topic particularly intriguing.

Actually, I have more time now so I'll try to resurrect the thread. I personally liked the friendly competition of CotFB, but homebrew Monday seemed pretty well-liked.
Got to say, personally I didn't care so much for the voting as I did for seeing all the homebrew and trying to come up with one. Something with a more frequent change of theme (EG weekly) and without so much of a competition aspect could be a fun approach. It would mean one person runs the thread, and then people can just post their homebrew + suggestions for next week, and then whoever runs the thread can pick one or two of the suggestions for the next week (people just comment if they think something's a good idea).
No winners, just lots of homebrew and feedback, with a theme!

I also came here to see all the other homebrew, to try to come up with something that fits the respective themes and to get some feedback on my homebrews. For me the competitive nature was more of an incentive to invest time into my brews, to redo old brews to make them better. The voting categories as suggested by Drumitch look like a really cool idea; I also like the idea of giving short feedback to each entry together with the votes - I remember HomebrewMindflayer and me doing something like that in CotFB VII.

Except for the fact that magical Monday is dead 95% of the time, yes. I'll try to continue it but if I run out of time again someone else can take over.

Yup. I would like to continue doing it, it's just so much work to review every entry. I'll probably do so again if we have a similar format for CotFB IX.

I think this would be overcomplicating things honestly. I think two fixes could make things a little bit more tolerable. First, voting by post. This makes the votes public and very difficult to troll. Voters would be encouraged to explain their reasoning. Second, (and I've stated this before) having a permanent judge, so that the decision of who will judge is removed. The category winners choose the categories, and the same person adjudicates. If nobody were willing, I would volunteer just to keep the competition going.

If we're not incorporating the suggestions I proposed, I agree with this. Having a singular 'judge' (more of an organizer, really) and allowing the category winners to pick the category works well and is very fair while still allowing winners to feel accomplished.
If there are a decent number of people who would like to see a competition using my suggested rules, however, I would be more than happy to host it and also create a separate discussion thread where judging categories can be selected and rules can be solidified (I would also include a link to the rules thread in the competition thread for ease of access).
I'd personally be excited to have multiple competition threads out there. I think of homebrew all the time but I usually don't commit to making it unless I'm actively using it in a game or if it's for CotFB.
About how many more respondents are youse all expecting before the debate is considered settled?
In my experience we would usually see 14-20 respondents in the voting for other competitions. Since the above poll currently sits within that range (16 as of writing this), we can expect that most people who usually vote in CotFB have likely given their opinion on this debate. Giving it a few more days may not hurt, but I am also itching to get started on the next one, lol
