Calling the help of other DMs/writers. I'm starting up my campaign and an integral part of the campaign is that towards the beginning the BBEG tricks the party and casts a super powerful spell that flings the party far into the future where the BBEG has won and now they have to try to get back to the past (Samurai Jack style). I'm wanting ideas for the materials required to cast such a spell, mostly because I was thinking about having an overarching plot having the party gather those same materials and getting powerful enough to perform such a ritual, so preferably materials rather hard to come by. Some ideas I had was sand taken from the plane of earth, a gear/cog forged in Mechanus, the blood of a deity, so on and so forth. I'd love to hear what all of you amazing people might think of! Thanks in advance
Most spell components are cleverly related to the spell, like detect thoughts uses a cp because it’s “a penny for your thoughts,” and message uses a wire like a telephone wire. The first thing that popped into my head when I started reading your post was the saying “a stitch in time,” so part of it could be two pieces of some exotic material that are stitched together and the caster breaks the stitching to represent ripping time apart. Another clever saying about time is “time is money.” So perhaps it could be two coins from a leprechaun’s hoard that have been freely given that have been stitched together with something like hair plucked from a living unicorn or something.
I like the idea of a component that is itself a paradox. Perhaps a trinket that originated from another timeline. Or maybe an object that arrived from the future that you then need to recover in the past, and ultimately send to the future.
