I’m making a new homebrew race with an extra attack and it works fine except for it won’t stack with the level 5 and 6 bonus attacks from classes. This is reall frustrating because it works with later bonuses but not the first ones. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong? I am using ( SET-EXTRA ATTACK-1 )
Ok in testing this is getting very frustrating , can we fix this. The racial extra attack isn’t stacking with anything. I understand if this is a balance problem but DND is supposed to allow homebrew scaling, is there a way I can put in an over ride to allow the 3 attacks at level 5?
It is absolutely a balance issue. If it is an extra attack, then it doesn't stack with another extra attack that don't stack (all the 5th level ones). The later fighter ability specifically says it stacks and allows 3... at 11th level. Allowing a racial trait to do that and stack with any class that gives an extra attack at 5th is clearly not RAI. It significantly devalues the fighter class and other class features at 10-11th that allows an 3 attack as part of the action. Not knowing specifically the why of this race being so deadly awesome besides "I want 3 attacks at 5th level with any class that grants 2 normally", hard to give advice on a right way to do this. For example, lots of classes and builds can have 2 attacks at 1st and 3 at 5th, but only through the use of a bonus action to get an offhand or a monk attack, or a polearmclub or the like. All of which are limited in dmg and require other stuff to make them equal up (like 1d4+stat or one handed weapon with no dmg bonus unless fighting style is taken). Allowing someone to take 3 attacks with say greatsword damage is a bit much at 5th or just two at 1st. So that would be the guide for how to do this. Give them a bonus attack that is limited in the same ways. And yes, that would compete with other uses of a bonus action, by design. The mechanics of how and when they can use that bonus action to attack would be tied to the reason they get it. Like if they had an extra set of arms (or tail) it could just be treated as allowing them to take an off-hand bonus attack as if dual wielding (and needing to abide by all dual wield rules). Or a tail swipe could be a 1d4+stat.
I read this on my lunch at work and I’ve been thinking about it all day. I have to say that I actually agree with you and I’ve decided to go a different route with this. I am going to give them a once per long rest use of action surge and throw in a few extras to make the difference. I would like to ask what you think the action surge would be worth as far as detect balance is concerned? It will ONLY be a one time use, never going up
Action surge is actually far more deadly then an extra attack, because action surge literrally gives you a second action which literally gives you all of your attacks again.
exemple: fighter level 20... takes the action to attack, has regular attack, then 3 more due to extra attacks for 4 attacks in one round. then take a bonus action thanks to off hand attack, and do 1 more attack. thats 5. then he takes action surge and take the attack action action again. he then do another attack, plus 3 others for a grand total of 9 attacks in one single turn !
action surge is also a short rest thing and literally is what makes the fighter great to begin with. giving a class feature to a race is literally breaking the classes.
what i would suggest is to find that one thing that is not a class feature and just give it that. what the moderator suggested you is actually quite a good thing because it allows the two handed fighters to actually have a use for the bonus action, something most melee do not have access to. the exemple would be the war cleric who actually get the bonus action attack as his extra attack. so i agree with the others, it would just better for yourself to just give him a bonus action attack.

You're not doing anything wrong.
The Extra Attack ability works the same way as it does through a class and is not stackable with the Extra Attack abilities of other classes.
ie. A character that is Fighter 6 / Ranger 6 for example would get the Extra Attack ability from Fighter and also from Ranger - they don't stack.

How about you give them a different ability of, "May use a bonus action to make a weapon attack"
It is very powerful, but is a way to achieve what you're looking for with a little cost to the additional attack.

I agree with you. I am diverging away from attack based bonuses. Thank you guys for your help. This race would have been a nightmare without you.
