So quick background here there is a monster in one of the Kobold press books called an Inkling. It is a construct that loves to eat the spells off of scrolls and tomes. When it does it learns those spells and can use them once a day for free with no components (I think up to 2nd level if I remember correctly). I was thinking of making a race of plasmoids called inklings and using that as my next character (wizard class). Its background will be that a powerful wizard created it in order to steal magic from other wizards without them knowing. He released it and sent it off to try to gather as much as it could and come back to him stronger than ever. He also encoded some of his own personal spells inside of it that it will naturally learn as it gets stronger (imbedded in the ink that makes it are arcane runes that unlock as it levels up in the wizard class this will cover how it will learn spells without stealing scrolls between levels) During the course of its travels it lost its memories but still has the feeling of wanting to steal and absorb magic spells and doesn't understand why. She eventually will join a group of individuals and adventure. When the party gets high enough level the wizard finds it and restores its memories but in the process helps the evil wizard and turns on the party. The party if they want it back will have to try and remind it of all the time that they spent and ask it if this is what it wants to do. That it has free thinking and can and should think for itself.
Anyway long story short how can I create this race without it breaking wizard too much and make it unfair for others that it is easy for it to learn spells without spending time reading scrolls and scribing them into a book like all other wizards do?
You can’t, you would have to modify it. You would have to make it such that you could eat a spell scroll of Cantrip through 2nd-level and be able to cast the spell a number of times equal to their proficiency modifier until the end of their next long rest and then the scroll is consumed and they would have to start over with a fresh scroll every day. You would have to limit it to Cantrips only until they hit 3rd level, then they would unlock the ability to eat 1st-level scrolls until 5th level when they would unlock the ability to eat 2nd-level spell scrolls. Something like this:
As an action you can consume a spell scroll that contains a Cantrip. Once you consume a spell scroll you cannot consume another spell scroll until you finish a long rest. Until the end of your next long rest, as an action you can cast the spell contained on the scroll without any material components. You can cast this spell this way a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus.
When you reach 3rd level you can consume a spell scroll that contains a 1st-level spell that can be cast as an action, and does not require material components with a specific cost. Starting at 5th level you can consume a spell scroll that contains a spell of 2nd-level or lower that can be cast as an action and does not require Material components with a specific casting cost.
