I have a player in my campaign playing an artificer who is fascinated with Netheril. In his studies, he has read about Ioun Stones. As he levels, he’s slowly learning about rune magic and how different gems inscribed with specific runes empower certain magical abilities. So far he’s learned to craft a few different Mind Crystals.
For his magnum opus, he’ll create an Ioun Stone that allows him to concentrate on two spells at once. I’d appreciate some thoughts or feedback to ensure it won’t be too weak or powerful. • He must still cast the spells over two turns. • The combined spell levels that he’s concentrating on cannot exceed his proficiency. • If he fails a roll to maintain concentration, he can choose which drops. Both drop with a natural one. • Unlimited use.
The campaign will go to level 14, so his max spell level will be 4th with a proficiency of 5. I’m thinking he’ll create this item around level 10.
I would limit the uses to only a few times per day, maybe even only once per day. That’s super powerful. Otherwise you’ve put some sensible restrictions on it, I especially like limiting the total combined spell levels concentrated on to a max equal to PB, that was smart, and clever.

Oh yes, I do hope you look forwards to him being Invisible (Greater Invisibility) + flying (Fly) at the same time, all the time. Or being an invisible (Greater Invisibility), Trex (Polymorph) or a super fast (Haste) Trex (Polymorph). Plus remember he can get that Artificer infusion that let's him auto-succeed on concentration checks.

Thanks! I've considered limiting the uses and weighed this against his limited spell slots. With limited spell slots, there's a natural limitation against overuse (especially against higher level spells). But this is a valid concern, I'll have to review the potential lower level spell combinations to ensure I can handle them. Thank you for the feedback.

The second restriction prevents any of these combinations. At best, he could do 1st and 4th, or 2nd and 3rd level combinations. But you bring up a good point, maybe this should require two separate concentration checks instead of one. Thanks
