I made a fighter subclass and gave it a feature specifically called “spellcasting”, plus a full spell list and everything. It works, but it only lets me learn spells up to 4th level, even as a level 20 fighter. Is there any way to fix this or is this just a dumb D&D beyond system rule?
There’s nothing “broken” about it, and it’s not just a DDB thing. That spell progression matches the exact same spell progression from the Eldritch Knight subclass, which is official WotC content. In essence, it’s a “dumb WotC” thing, and DDB just complies with it.
So even if I set the spell prepare type as "level" it'll still only stay half level? I probably should buff the subclass a bit cause I was expecting it to be a lot stronger with spells...
Not “half” level, one third level. The paladin is a “half” caster, Eldritch Knight is less. The “Spell Prepare Type” and “Knows All Spells” dropdowns arw useless at the subclass level. They won’t do anything for your subclass. For a link to more information about this and other homebrewing information please check out the Homebrew Subclasses & Species FAQ: (https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/dungeons-dragons-discussion/homebrew-house-rules/131411-a-homebrewers-how-to-faq#HomebrewSubclasses&SpeciesFAQ), in this case question #7. And there are a few other homebrewing FAQs as well in that same post.
