I believe there is a problem between Homebrew created items and changes being made in preparation for the future D&D Beyond.
Over the last few months there has been an increase in character sheets becoming unavailable. One of my campaigns had 4 out of 7 characters become unavailable at the same time. A second campaign had 1 character become unavailable a few months later.
People posting in the Bugs & Support section began to suspect it had to do with homebrew items that were equipped when a backend change was made in D&D Beyond that from that point on would not allow the character to make it past the rules and presentation layers.
Since someone cannot get to the character on the D&D Beyond web page, they can not get to the character to unequip items on the character to eliminate what ever is no longer working with the changes being made to the site.
I suggested on the forum how D&D Beyond might make a support web page to get access to unequip all items fairly easier. No reply from D&D Beyond. A forum user suggested a method using the mobile app that did allow me to access the characters inventory without going thru the rules and presentation layers and then unequip all home brew items. Access to the characters came back immediately on this site.
The point I am making here is changes are being made in the background on this site that are wiping out access to characters that worked fine before the changes occurred. Regaining access occurs when unequipping homebrew items that worked fine before the background changes were made.
The question occurs that since this error is likely to increase in frequency as more changes are made to this site and these homebrew items passed muster before the changes to the site is anyone at D&D Beyond looking at making a support page when this occurs and second, what is the plan for homebrew for the future?
I doubt they will ever make a support page, no. The way things usually go whenever backend changes cause problems is they absolutely stonewall us with silence and then just as suddenly as the problem began it seems to resolve itself without any information from the DDB team regarding the issue whatsoever. The length of time between a problem’s onset and its resolution varies and is also usually not mentioned by the team .
With an update coming tomorrow and not a lot of information about it I have warned my players to make a copy of their important characters and unequip any homebrew items on the copies just in case. It seems to me that there was very few problems prior to last November and now it seems to be accelerating. I hope everything goes well tomorrow.
