I'm trying to make a magic longsword that gives its user proficiency with itself, similar to Elven Chain. I can't find a way to do that without just telling my player to manually add their proficiency bonus to the attack roll via the customization option. If there is a way to do this, can someone tell me?

Unfortunately, there is no way (yet) to only give proficiency to just that one sword other than to manually adjust it like you mentioned. Thats the same way Elven Chain does it as far as I know, it gives proficiency with all chain while you are wearing it, but you can only wear one chain shirt at a time so it doesn’t matter. If you give this Longsword Attunement, at least it will only work while attuned.
But as far as I'm aware, it doesn't actually do anything, because D&D Beyond doesn't visibly show any penalty when you wear armor that you don't have proficiency in. But anyway, thanks for the info!

Ah well, there you go then. But I do know granting proficiency with its own base weapon type will work.
