I created the Chameleon Collar as a magic item for one of my player’s familiars. What does everyone think please? Is it over powered, under powered, or a nice flavor item? The character is a warlock and her familiar is a Pseudodragon, but it is designed to work for any familiar.
The question of, “Can a Familiar Attune to a Magic Item?” has been debated several times and there isn’t a definitive answer in the rules one way or the other. Since I’m the DM and I’m creating this to be used in my campaign I’m going to let the familiar attune to it.
Okay. But what box are you going to check for that? I was not speaking in terms of RAW/RAI, I was literally speaking of the fact that as soon as that player hits the “attune” button it will reflect on the PC, not the familiar.
The simpler solution is to have the item not actually require Attunement, but to simply note in the description that it is attuned by the familiar. That was all I was initially trying to point out. That way everything works the way you want without the extra steps.
Requiring attunement does the same thing that requiring attunement for items for PC's does. It limits how many magic items can be used at one time, and that's important to game balance.
Clearly you are not seeing my point. If you give that familiar 3 items that require Attunement, they will get placed into the PC’s “equipment” since familiars do not get an “equipment” section of their own on the character sheet. If that player hits the “attune” button on those items, the DDB character sheet will attune them to the Character, not the familiar. That would make it so that the PC can attune nothing for themselves.
I am not saying that your item should not require Attunement, all I am pointing out is that it will not work the way you intend on the DDB character sheet. If you are going to make a simple note of it and leave it so that the player simply never hits that “attune” button, then you may as well make it purely a note and skip adding the button.
My comment has nothing whatsoever to do with game balance or if familiars can or can not theoretically attune items. My comment was entirely about how coding it the way you have done will cause inadvertent consequences for the player who gets the item because of the way that coding interacts with the coding for the character sheet. This is not a game balance issue, merely a technological compatibility issue. Like trying to plug an American hairdryer into a European electrical socket, it just won’t fit, and therefore won’t work correctly.
Edit: Unless you intend for this item to count against the PC’s number of Attunement slots.
Legal or not I think humanoid like familiars, imp, quasit, Sprite, should be able to wear magic rings, like a ring of protection, spell storing, or ring of displacement etc...magic rings shrink to fit and why should it count as an attunement slot for your character? These are sentient beings and can use magic items in game like a wand of magic missiles. Perhaps limit these items by rarity level...no legedary or artifcacts...etc. Characters are limited enough with only three attunement slots and virtually everything in 5e requires attunement. I purchased a small crafted necklace for a psuedodragon that allows it to "cast" the spell Dragon Breath one time a day. This is in something that equalizes the Psuedodragon (which is the least desirable Warlock Familiar) to make it comparable to an Imp, Quasit, or Sprite.
What about a small magic bow for your Sprite? A repeating mini crossbow? Something again to give them value in combat or make them more survivable without breaking the game. Warlocks especially need all the help they can get.
magic items for a familiar? hmmm...i would make the player wear the item and make it count as one of the magic items a player can use that day, but the benefit of whatever it is goes to the familiar. that way the familiar gets something and doesnt have to worry about attunement or anything, and the player loses a magic item slot by 'giving it' to their nfamiliar but its still giving them a benefit in the form of the familiar ...or something like that heh
so you'd need to nail horseshoes of speed to your boots to make your horse go faster?
Also, what's the 'one of the magic items a player can use that day' you're talking about? I'm not aware of a limit on the number of magic items you can use in a day, just attunement slots, and maybe total magic items owned if you care about that rule in AL.

Only issue I see is that Familiars don’t get Attunement slots so the PC would have to attune it which would eat up one of their slots.

The only way to do that is to type a Custom note into the Familiar in the Extras part of the character sheet.
