I’m sure you can find AD&D books for cheap, and IMHO they are the best sources for stuff like this since 3e, 3.5, 4e, and 5e were all built from that foundation.
Just FYI, DriveThruRPG.com sells all the old books as high quality PDFs for $10-15 each and in many cases they also offer print on demand.
In my opinion 2e and 3.5e give the best bang-for-your-buck when it comes to doing D&D archaeology.
I tend to use the 3.5e SRD and OSRIC for my old versions references, though that won't help with settings and adventures.
I use Mystara* for my setting and use my old 1e and 2e D&D and AD&D modules for adventures. I just replace the old stats for stuff with the updated 5e stats. A 6th level Cleric is a 6th level cleric as far as I’m concerned, nine skeletons are nine skeletons, etc.
*Well, my personal homebrewed/modified version of Mystara anyway.
I just add language that as long as the attack doesn't have disadvantage, roll three d20s and use the highest. This makes it a little better, but not overpowered. Where as two 2d20s adds a statistical bonus of about 4-5 three adds about 5-6. Diminishing returns.
