Hi, as the title implies I am having issues adding Darkvision to a homebrew race. It should be possible, but I'm finding it difficult. Thank you in advance.
Hello, I am having an issue with adding darkvision to a homebrew race the I am creating for a campaign. I have tried the Sense > darkvision > 60 fixed along with set base > darkvision > 60 fixed and even set > darkvision > 60 fixed and nothing is showing up on me sheet for is in the senses area. I even have it set up to show on sheet. Am I doing something wrong?
Never mind just got it to work must of been a weird upload issue do to internet.
It can often take upto 20 minutes, took 30 minutes one time for myself, for updates to cycle through and update within the database and usually the quickest way to see if it is showing as it should is to either remove the race/class/etc that gives the ability you changed to the test character, or create a new char completely. It doesnt always work however so its just often a matter of giving it time to filter the change though. Yes, its a pain to wait at times.
Is there a specific difference between Sense -> Darkvision and Set Base -> Darkvision?
They both seem to work for adding darkvision to a character, class etc., they also don't seem to be used consistently in existing races; I don't remember which one I copied once, but it used Set Base so that's what I've been using in my own homebrew.

I remain a free user only until my groups are done migrating from DDB, and if necessary D&D, after which I'm done. There are better systems owned by better companies out there.
I have unsubscribed from all topics and will not reply to messages. My homebrew is now 100% unsupported.
I was making a homebrew race and it was being a pain. I had tried all those things until after some verbal components (AKA yelling at my computer/ beyond and threating to throw them into the sun) It worked lol. I think it was more so my internet being slow and me just being impatient. Also it helps if you put the right snippet in which can be a pain to find at times.
There is also a delay of up to 20 minutes between saving changes on a homebrew and those changes pushing through to a character sheet that is already using that homebrew.
I'm having a similar issue, except it''s to do with replacements.
Basically, I have a subrace/variant that I'm currently playing with. The base race has a Darkvision of about 60 feet. I recently learned I could hit the 'variant' tab, and that would allow me to replace the traits of the base race. (I did it for my kitsune to replace their illusion magic, for example) and this specific variant, since I'm just following what's written on the homebrew wiki for it, has a Darkvision of 90ft.
Previously did it with 60 + 30, but then both showed up in the sheet, and I wanted to only have Modified Darkvision to show up. As of now, the race shows as 0 darkvision unless I add a customization for it.
Alright, I’m not entirely sure what’s going on. I have to ask you a few questions to figure it out.
You wrote “subclass/variant,” which is it? They work very differently. Subraces add traits on top of the base race traits, variant races replace base race traits with different traits. From your explanation I am assuming it is a subrace, which is probably why it was showing both the 60 and the +30 before. If it were a variant it would replace the 60 with the 90. Have I guessed correctly?
When you say you could “hit the ‘variant tab,’” what did you mean? Did you mean the “Is Variant” checkbox in the homebrewer?
What type of trait did you create, a “granted” trait, or a “replacement” or “additional” trait?
It's exactly both of the things you said. It started as a sub-race, then I switched it to a variant. With the checkmark on the character creation, yes. (Is Variant)
I have a trait called Darkvision on the main race, it gives 60ft of dark vision. Then I made the trait Modified Darkvision, which gives a Darkvision of 90, and replaces the parent trait. It is set to Replacement, and it does actually replace the block of text for darkvision, instead of creating a new one. my darkvision doesn't show up however.

Try remaking your sub/variant as a Variant Race from the beginning instead of starting with a subrace and turning it into a variant and see if that works.

Once I re-make the entire race, I will. it does show up as -variant- in the main race. I'd just rather not touch it too much right now since it's currently in-use for a char. And there's an added thing just to make something work for the class as a work-around.

You don’t have to remake the entire race. You also don’t have to delete the current variant race either. If you create a brand new variant race for your race, you can set it to work exactly the same way, even with the additional trait, and test it on a brand new character. If it is working the way you want it to, you can then change races for the character that is currently using the version that doesn’t quite work properly, and everything should work fine after that.

I always do that yes. i know this is supposed to work, because the second species I made, i was able to replace a spell for another with this method. Senses just.. seem to work differently..?

Set base sets a base DV so that if something else, like a magic item, subclass, etc. has Sense->DV, it adds the two together.

So it does replace the base trait, but doesn’t display the Darkvision? Interesting. Are you sure the Modifier for the 90 saved?

Absolutely sure yes, I didn't do anything other than take screenshots:
#1: The modifier page, setup exactly like Darkvision.
#2: The modifier's edit page, to show exactly how I set it up. (Same as Darkvision)
#3: How the original Darkvision is added in.

After you saved the Variant, did you remember to re-save the whole race again using the main [SAVE CHANGES] button under Basic Information?
