I made a race, shared it, made a new version, adding a variant, then made a new version editing the base race. The variant was still attached to the older version, and the newest version had no variant.
Yeah, I made a gnoll race and didn't notice a tiny spelling error. It had two subraces and I didn't want to recreate them both, so I had to just leave it in there.

At least for me, the new version doesn't save any subraces or variants from the old version. Only option I know is to remake the variant.

Similar situation here; a variant for one of my monsters overrode the original, despite being template-copy rather than a new version...
All reasons why I tell people not to publish anything that hasn’t been fully playtested and edited if they can at all avoid it.
