You're able to determine that this is probably the Shadowfell plane of existence that you now find yourselves on.

"A rightful place awaits you in the Realms Above, in the Land of the Great Light. Come in peace, and live beneath the sun again, where trees and flowers grow."
— The message of Eilistraee to all decent drow.
"Run thy sword across my chains, Silver Lady, that I may join your dance.”
After some consideration, Randall adds, "Most likely, this is the Shadowfell plane, a dreary and twisted pale imitation of our own Prime Material plane."

Are you travelling like before? (Randall and Pepin are the only ones on the flying carpet etc.)
Zenodor believes he picks up the trail but after an hour or so of travel you find there is either no more trail or you've lost it somewhere over the last hour of travel, you almost imagine at times that you see something that might be a sign of the trail but under closer scrutiny quickly realize it was a combination of your eyes playing tricks on you and your hope for finding signs of a trail to follow. You begin to feel an overwhelming sense of failure, so sudden and forceful did it strike you that you felt this isn't you... it isn't natural for you.
A dread feeling of loss and hopelessness tries to settle over you but you shake it off as even here you are not alone, you have your closest allies and you have survived many fights together.

You come to a dangerously craggy cliff that slopes steeply at a 60 degree angle and drops off for just over a hundred feet until it reaches a small bleak beach. Waves as cold and black as night crash relentlessly against the barren shore.
Anyone who wants can make a Perception check.

It looks difficult to get to bottom this way if you were walking.
Randall hears a distance, occasional knocking sound... as if wood were hitting something... but it isn't rhythmic or predictable.

Randall is able to jog Tempe's memory and you both recall that this area reminds you of the beach where you met the smuggler, at least geographically, the general bleak and depressing atmosphere of the Shadowfell notwithstanding.
The sound of the knocking could indeed be coming from a boat, and you all remember where it was hidden back on your home plane, but since you can all fly you have no need of a boat. And if the wizard came this way it was also without making use of the boat.

At the very least you all come to realize that if this is the smuggler's beach back on your home plane and the Shadowfell is supposed to 'mirror' that then you are just over a day's travel from where Laurentiis would be.
