With a burst of light, two radiant bolts of shimmering starlight collide with the gazer. Utterly overloaded with stellar energy, the gazer pops like a melon, gore and eye stalks scattering across the sewer corridor. Everything falls silent as you all stare, amazed, at this glowing lizardfolk before you.
"Well, I'll be damned... Nice trick you've got there, friend," Renaer says, patting Kassar on the shoulder. A bit of stardust drifts off of Kassar's form.
Combat is over.
The gazer was guarding a corridor near which a larger chalk symbol is on display. It stretches far, far into the darkness.
"Okay, I'm not sure about the rest of you, but I don't want to kill everything incour path. We can't just massacre any kind of -guard dog, I'll call it - that we come across. Not simply because they seemed a little hostile. It is what they're suppossed to do, after all." Vyrax allows his words to sink in for a moment. "If we leave a bloody trail behind us, people could track us and punish us for it. In particular, the watch may get involved if it gets too serious. Let's try to separate those we must fight from those we can distract and sneak past, shall we?"
"I mean, sure, don't want to kill every guy we see, but the thing was going to attack us." Topaz replies as he retrieves his arrow. "Besides, you heard the watch. They don't really care about stuff that happens down here."
Glancing up toward Vyrax, he adds: "Sneaking, though, I can help us all with that. Once we find their hideout."
"I have never had much luck in talking with such creatures. I prefer peace, but sometimes this is not an option."
The patterns across Kassar's scales have faded slightly, but still remains glowing in the dark sewers. Looking at himself, "This may give away our position, if we are trying to be sneaky I believe I can revert my form."
Cami puts thought on Vyrax's words, considering them thoroughly. "I only aimed to protect. I'll not draw the first shot if they don't look immediately hostile. That said, the thing did look hostile the moment it spotted us. The best way to avoid a fight next time would be to notice them first, I think. My armor is a little noisy, but I still can give it a try, and I have some ways to make distractions. More than one."
"I think you're forgetting guard dogs are trained to look hostile to scare intruders off. We're trespassing into their territory, the thing is supposed to be hostile. Doesn't mean you can't calm them with a treat. Well, that if it is just a guard dog."Vyrax sighs. Perhaps those who didn't live in the city - the top side of it at least - had a different set of morals. "Nevermind that. Let's continue before someone spots us with blood on our hands."
That gives the human yet another pause. She tries to add up a reasonable response, but she only ends up looking down with a guilty expression. "Thank you for your thoughts... I can't believe I failed to think it through... It's not something I'd do... Let's continue, yes..."
Ianric shakes his head a bit at the statements, his usually ever present massive grin dimmed ever so slightly by the dank conditions they are in "Normally I would agree, as avoiding a fight is preferable. Down here though we must kill that which would kill us. Else we will be the ones to be flushed away into the sewers, never to be heard from again. We have a job to do, as soon as we find our quarry we can withdraw with as little bloodshed as possible."
"Speaking from experience, Mr. Vyrax, the minions of the Xanathar will not be too keen on showing you the same mercy. I appreciate your advocacy for peace, but trust me when I say that you will not find it down here, where lawlessness reigns," Renaer says, nodding to Vyrax. "Let's press on, shall we? Floon's going to need our help."
After following the darkened corridor for five minutes, you all emerge at a central sewer hub. The main sewer tunnel expands into a circular hub with a pair of arrow slits carved into its outer walls, directly across from each other. Two passages continue on to the north and south. A stone door is set into the back wall of a stone ledge to the west, and next to it is another chalk symbol.
(If you check the roll20, the map for the sewer hub is now available).
Topaz shushes the others and whispers: "I'd say this is probably their hideout. One sec, I'll make it so we don't make nearly as much noise when we approach."
Placing a hand over his chest, the crystals in his body pulse blue for a moment before returning to their natural orange. (Casting pass without trace on the party: + 10 to stealth checks for 1 hour)
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Cami lets Pocket sit on her shoulder as she marches on forward behind Topaz. Her owl companion is keeping their ears out for any trouble throughout her path there.
Cami's Stealth Check: 18 (Pass Without Trace included.)
Pocket's Perception Check: 18 (Advantage from Keen Hearing and Sight.)
Despite Ianric slipping up a couple times, you all proceed forward stealthily. Interestingly, as Pocket looks around, they send Cami a telepathic thought: there are some irregularities in the wall to the right. It looks like a thin square-shaped line in the wall, almost in the shape of a door.
(The wall marked 'S' is where the irregularity is located)
As Pocket spots the line and passes the information to Cami, her first reaction is just saying in a whisper, "Secret door!" She doesn't stop moving with the others, but her eyes are trailing the walls with whatever light they have available down there so that she can see and find a way to open it.
Investigation18 (I'll accept the argument that lack of light and being in-movement should give disadvantage if it's made, so here's the second roll: 15)
She decides to explain what she whispered only after the examination is complete. "Pocket saw something. On the wall. I don't know that it's relevant to the mission, but I need to know what it is. Maybe leave it for after if we have time. No need to worry about that."
The door opens into a short corridor that turns north and then west, leading to another door. Topaz notices a small peephole in the north-most wall, and from the other side he swears he can hear faint snoring.
