Darwin carries on playing his pan flute, really enjoying the impromptu tune he was making up, but he does play a little quieter. He figures he best not get involved this time.
"I suppose I can understand the mistake- but my main question is about the meeting we are supposed to be escorting you to. Are we going to miss the meeting entirely? And yes, we will acquire additional payment for the additional days."
Antonius nods, 'Of course, I am a man of my word, I'll make sure you're all fairly paid in line with the guidelines we've laid out. I don't imagine the Marshall will leave without having seen my invention. Worst case, he'll believe trouble on the road, weather or something delayed us.'
There is a tone of relief in his voice at how reasonably everyone is taking his mistake. His whole body, however, tenses suddenly as an inhuman screech echoes through the air.
'What was that?' he asks, his eyes slightly widened.
Another screech echoes and Toryn identifies that the noise is getting louder. He can't quite place the direction, as it seems to echo from all around. Nothing is visible beyond the treeline imminently.
As a third screech pierces the air, Toryn is able to pin point the direction of the source and spins towards it in just enough time to see an enormous bulk of feathers emerging from the treeline.
Beady eyes side either of a beak that gleams in the moonlight. It screeches one more time and charges.
Hamish is so enraptured by Darwin's playing that he is oblivious until the music stops. He leaps up starts to let the thrum of a spell coalesce between his hands as he looks towards whatever just broke the tree line.
Despite Toryn's early recognition of the fact, he is one of the slowest to react as the mass of the feathered and muscled body enters the clearing. As it enters the light of your camp you see it stands on four legs and is yet taller than the average man at it's shoulders. Grey and white feathers cover it's bulk, it's legs ending in sharp talons. It's eyes, round and large are luminous yellow perched above a wicked looking curved beak.
It screeches again and Hamish is the first to act.
The fire hits the beast in it's flank but fails to do much more than singe some feathers and char a small amount of flesh. It reels towards Hamish, screeching it's challenge.
The beast sees the threat a fraction too late. It tears backwards, pushing it's weight off it's front legs, saving it's throat but the axe still buries itself into the creatures chest.
You cut deeply into the creatures flank and it's screech turns more into a scream. It lashes out with it's beak at Toryn but the point scrapes off his armor. It's paws, and talons, slash at Ida but the blow again fails to break through the armor.
Darwin scrambles to his feet and pulls out his crystal, holding it up in front of himself in the direction of the beast.
He narrows his eyes and focusses, not so much on the beast itself, but looking for that well of power the stranger spoke of. So far he had not reached too deeply into it, but now he delved further.
He instinctively knew that the power could be shaped into different ways. He first channels the power through the crystal, saying some words of power in gnomish.
He feels rather than sees dark tendrils leave the crystal and engulf the beast, sapping it’s strength.
He reaches within the well of power once more, speaking different words, but words of power all the same. A beam of eldritch energy streaks from the palm of his other hand, just as he releases his grip on his pan flute and it drops to the floor.
Unfortunately the beam streaks wide of the mark, he would need to practice with this new power.
Hamish scrambles back a few paces while pulling the sling from his belt. He plants his feet and fires off a shot over Ida's shoulder, hoping his aim doesn't clock her in the back of the head.

Toryn takes his seat by the fire again to see how the crew reacts to this news.

His eyes flick between Antonius and Ida.

Toryn looks at the artificer. Quiet! he hisses. He draws his sword and listens intently to determine what is out there.

Ida immediately douses the fire. She looks at Darwin to tell him to quit playing. She draws her battle-axe and shield and tries to listen intently.

Everyone, please, roll initiative
Almost too late does Darwin notice anything wrong, hearing Toryn hiss for quiet and seeing the look on Ida's face.
He is just dropping his pan flute from his lips when the beast appears.
Hamish is so enraptured by Darwin's playing that he is oblivious until the music stops. He leaps up starts to let the thrum of a spell coalesce between his hands as he looks towards whatever just broke the tree line.

It screeches again and Hamish is the first to act.
Hamish draws upon the fear he feels staring down such a creature and focuses it between his hands, hurling the energy forward as a bolt of raw power.

The fire hits the beast in it's flank but fails to do much more than singe some feathers and char a small amount of flesh. It reels towards Hamish, screeching it's challenge.
Ida is up next
Ida cuts the beast off from Hamish and swings her battle-axe towards it's throat with all the fury she can muster.

The beast sees the threat a fraction too late. It tears backwards, pushing it's weight off it's front legs, saving it's throat but the axe still buries itself into the creatures chest.
Toryn swings his sword towards the chest, hoping to cut the heart.

Darwin is up.

As the blast skews wide, Antonius scrambles across the clearing to reach his pack.
Back to the top, Hamish.
Hamish scrambles back a few paces while pulling the sling from his belt. He plants his feet and fires off a shot over Ida's shoulder, hoping his aim doesn't clock her in the back of the head.
