Briny sets down the quill and turns her attention to Sloane. "It's admirable to have a cause that you believe in so strongly that nothing in the world could make you betray your allies. That makes me curious about what kind of cause could make you believe in it so strongly! World peace? Not likely. Not something petty either, you don't strike me as someone who is that shallow. Well, that leaves something to do with power then, doesn't it? I understand you not wanting to betray your allies, but surely you can tell us something about your cause. Maybe our motivations are not dissimilar."
((Trying to use a bit of persuasion here, also some insight on whatever reaction/answer he has.))
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
(Oh yeah, I meant to roll insight to see if he had any reaction to her insulting the Welcomers. Since he seems so loyal to his group, maybe pissing him off will reveal who he's working for.)
"Believe me, our motivations could not be further apart. And I will not betray my cause," Soares reiterates.
For Briny:
This is a man that is not going to willingly divulge his secrets. He seems fully and wholeheartedly devoted to his cause.
For Hex:
This is a man that is not going to willingly divulge his secrets. The way he laughed at your description of the Welcomers seemed to indicate that he agrees with your assessment.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
(I'll dump all the questioning and rolls Hex has in one post so it doesn't take like a week to do haha. Feel free to add anything in between punches. Not sure if you would want me to roll a new Insight every time or to just the the one I did before, Barty, so I'll leave it to you.)
Unarmed attack: 9 for 2 damage
She throws another punch on the other side of his face. "What about the other big ol' factions? Harpers? Lord's Alliance? Order of the Gauntlet? Emerald Enclave? I can see you in any one of those groups, acting all high and mighty like your "cause" makes you better than everyone else."
Hex glances back at Sylyra and shrugs at him, doing a bad job hiding her smile. "No offence of course."
Unarmed attack: 15 for 2 damage
Once again watching his reaction before punching him again. "Cult of the Dragon, maybe? We had a run in with them a little while back. Seems they have their grubby little hands in quite a few happenings around Phlan. Won't matter though, we've stopped them plenty of times before and we will again."
She roughly grabs him by the face, digging her nails in his cheeks, and forces him to look at her. "Or maybe you're just like Sylyra said, a pathetic lacky to some rich ******* in town who doesn't care about you or whether you live or die."
Soares coughs through an increasingly bloodied face, but says nothing as he takes his punishment, clinging to consciousness by the end of Hex's assault.
OOC: Additional insight checks here wouldn't reveal anything new to Hex. This guy isn't going to willingly crack.
Uragum sighs after watching all of this. He rolls his shoulders and says. "Well, if he won't talk, why don't we just severe his ties and make him a liability. Send out word on the street that the he sung like a canary for a ridiculous amount of money. Make it convincing. Maybe send a little money down at the tavern, pay for some rounds on his behalf. Talk it up and they will see him a threat. Then we just release him, see who comes to clean up this mess and follow them."
(Oh wow I just noticed that as*hole got censored hahaha)
"Okay, I concede. You're a lot more stubborn than you look, Soares. Not a single crack after all that." Hex sighs in frustration. "It's not a bad plan, Uragum, but maybe we should go talk to a certain halfing first and see what she has to say for herself. I also want to go visit the library and see if we can find anything more about the stolen books, considering two of them were a part of collections held in the library."
The worst of Soares's wounds at Hex's hands are healed by Sylyra. The fake elf turned human breathes sharply in relief.
OOC: Ready to advance once the next action is confirmed. RP as much as you'd like, and just let me know when the party has determined their next course of action.
Sylyra turns his eyes on Uragum, clearly impressed by the goliath's suggestion. Narrowing his eyes again, he looks back at Hex with a sly smile. "Really? You're ready to give in? But I just cleaned him up for you. He's ready for more," he says, stressing the last word.
"Oh I don't doubt he is but the amount of effort I would need to put in to get anything out of him at this point wouldn't be worth it. There are other easier ways to get the information we want." Hex goes back to Soares, making sure his bindings are still tight before blindfolding and gagging him so he can't make any noise. "Let's just leave him here for now and head to library."
If no one disagrees or has anything to add, Hex will lead the party to go see Cassra again.
Briny seems agreeable to leaving, taking her time to gather up and organize her notes before carefully putting them back in her backpack. She is the last one ready but soon follows the others out of the room and is ready to go.
On their way out, Sylyra sidles up beside Uragum. "I guess we all learn from our own experiences, don't we? One week, our reputations are being dragged through the mud. The next, we do the dragging," he says, relishing the sound of it.
Leaving the room at the Cracked Crown, and leaving Soares - bound and gagged - to his own devices, you make the short journey across Podol Plaza to the largest structure in Scholar's Square. The great front reading room is just as busy this afternoon as it was the evening prior, with many citizens of Phlan joining the scribes, attendants, administrators, and other staff in perusing the many written works within.
You are stopped prior to leaving the front room, then escorted back to the small, cramped office with the sign on the door reading:
Cassra Brandywine Scribe Master
The small piece of wood hanging beneath the sign still indicates that Cassra is working in her office. The young, blonde-haired halfling woman emerges after hearing your knock, her hands and shirt still stained with smudges of blue ink. Wiping her hands off (and further smudging her shirt), she grins up at you.
"Oh, good, it's you! I was beginning to wonder if you'd given up," she remarks.
Hex raises a brow at Cassra's remark but gives her a smile nonetheless. "I'm sure you have been, Cassra. Can we come inside? There's something important we need to talk to you about and it's probably best if we don't do it where there are so many prying eyes."
Briny nods in agreement with Hex then gives her best "Customer Service" smile. "We wouldn't give up that easily, not when there are still clues to follow."
"Of course," Cassra replies with a nod, opening her door for you and rushing back into her cramped office. She carefully brushes some books that are stacked atop the room's lone chair for visitors, sheepishly moving it back to a wall so someone can have a place to sit.
"Sounds like you're still investigating," she mentions to Briny. "So how can I help you?"
Hex pulls out the note she found before and hands it to Cassra. "Does this look familiar to you? We picked it up off the bodies of some attackers." She waits until after the halfing has read the note before mentioning, "They claimed they were hired by someone with hands stained with blue ink."

Sylyra walks up behind the prisoner, lazily places a hand on each shoulder, and pumps a cure wounds into him.
