Birgon sees your group having difficulty with your coinage. "There aren't many adventurers that come through here. If you come back with more coin the items will still be here. I'll even set them aside for you."
Crannoc gives his strange, stretching bow to Birgon. "You are wise and generous with your bounty, den-mistress. As you are too, Miesha."
Not having understood the purposeful, coded conversations that Maggwyn (or Jasper) were having with Birgon, Crannoc naively plows ahead with a question that might be better asked more discreetly. "What do you expect to flow from the visit with the Neldfield city-folk?"
Knowing the others were talking about what to do next, she figured they might be interested as well. Also, would be interesting to see what else they could manage? "What type of job are we talking about? I can't speak for my friends, but if you feel several of us would be more beneficial, I think it would be good to include them."
Crannoc - Birgon replies somewhat indecisively. “I’m not entirely sure what to expect from them. I have plenty of dealings with city-folk but not those that are in such positions as those in the envoy. Not really my type of people. The chances of anyone other than Vara winning the election for mayor are all but nonexistent, so I personally think the envoy is wasting its time.” Birgon pauses for a moment before continuing. “The people here aren’t too keen on city-folk after some events in the Civil War. Most of them would prefer to just govern entirely locally, and I suspect the envoy will only anger them. They’re not really a threat, though.”
Maggwyn - Birgon lowers her voice to a whisper to you. “You can choose to let in your group or not, but I suspect they’d be quite helpful in this job. There’s a person in town, moved here for his retirement. Someone doesn’t like him very much for one reason or another, so they want information drawn from his house. They seem to think there is evidence against him, and you need to find it. When you find the evidence you bring it directly to me. If you find any valuables that won’t be missed I wouldn’t mind those so much either, and I’ll pay you for them. You up for the burglary?”
Money spent and feeling a bit crowded in the shop, Miesha thanks the shopkeeper as she exits out into the morning air. It wasn’t just them all inside the shop, Miesha also saw what looked like some subtle conversation between the owner and a couple members of their fledgling group. Miesha wasn’t sure what it was about but had the sense she wasn’t supposed to so exiting seemed the best course…
Do they know her? Miesha wondered. Is it something about the tablet they wish to keep from the rest of us? Miesha’s hand went to her waist where she still wore the flail the recovered and she wondered what dark magics it and the tablet may be involved in…
Still, most likely mattered little. Miesha was in it for the game and notoriety, not any particular agenda. She could likely find a way to work whatever was going on to her benefit… Though it would help knowing what was going on.
Maggwyn raises her eyebrow and smiles, "Why yes, I am up for the burglary." She looks around to the others, Jasper is a definite yes, Kass probably? Crannoc maybe? But Miesha...she might not. Honestly, she might even turn them in if they mention it? "Do you happen to know what sort of evidence we are looking for? And where might we find this individuals house? I'm assuming they are out this evening, that is why you want it done tonight?"
There it is again. Aoswell folk referring to those from Neldfield as 'city-folk'. As if Aoswell is not itself a large city. Neldfield must truly be a vast metropolis.
"Someday, perhaps you can tell me more about what transpired during the... Civil War..." (Crannoc stumbles on this phrase) "But I know that it is best when the transition of leadership is peaceful. I join you in your hope that Vara will be mayor and will observe the envoy if I can."
(Though after a moment, Crannoc realizes that Birgon hadn't actually said that she hopes Vara is chosen.)
Miesha - As your hand comes into contact with the flail and you think of its dark origin, there is a brief shock that starts in the finger touching the flail and shoots through your body. For the most part, the shock subsides, but a faint pain in your hand remains.
Maggwyn - Birgon takes a small, leather notebook from her belt and flips through it. She reads one page then forms a response. “Any information that could be used to incriminate him. If there is none then some handwriting samples and perhaps a wax seal. Either way, his house is on the outskirts of town. It’s one of the larger buildings in town, probably next only to the Lonsvell’s keep.” She glances out the window, then points through it. “That there is the top of his house. He’s part of the group taking the envoy on a tour, so for much of the afternoon the only occupants of his home will be his guards. The pay is based on how much information you bring back.”
Crannoc - Birgon nods in agreement with your statement. “In a larger city than this you might find plenty of history books on the subject. Most won’t include how the war affected towns like Aoswell, though. I think it might be best that the people here move on, they’ve been holding a grudge for four years now and it’s complicating matters for the Lonsvells. That’s why we came into the issue of having no official leader.”
Miesha shakes her finger and almost sticks her finger in her mouth, but then think better of it. May need to wrap that thing up, she thinks. Definitely need Kass to do what she can to find out more about it. And the tablet...
((Sorry, who has the tablet? Not sure if Miesha actually has possession of it or...?))
(I believe that it was first taken by Miesha, so I assume she still has it.)
(I thought so but then it seemed like maybe the one villager who asked to study it (was it this same shopkeeper?) actually had it and started studying. Whichever... Just looking for Kass to Identify it and flail eventually...)
Miesha - You hear the clopping of hooves in the dirt. Looking to your left you see a procession of three carriages. The first and last of the three are larger but significantly less decadent, while the middle one is slightly smaller but has sleeker paint and more details carved into the sides and wheels. On the door of the middle carriage is a painting of North Vexcall’s flag: a grey background with two blue circles, one inside of the other, both around a white fox’s head. The envoy has arrived slightly earlier than anticipated, at noon. Despite this, you see to your right that Vara Lonsvell is still prepared to greet them. She is surrounded by a few additional individuals, most of them you recognize from last nights celebration.
Maggwyn - You see the envoy pass by in the window. That means that you should have somewhere between 8 and 10 hours to complete this task.
Hearing the clip clop of hooves and taking a look, it's pretty apparent to Miesha this must be the expected city folk. She presumes the leading and trailing carriages likely hold troops, security, whatever they happen to call them for such visits. Of course there would be a protection detail brought along but to her eye Miesha feels this may be excessive for visiting such a small backwater hamlet. Not a concern of hers in particular, though...
Miesha gives a bit of a knock upon the door to the shop, kind of cocks her head in the direction the procession is headed to indicate she is going to check it out. Miesha then wanders over to the right towards where Vara Lonsvell awaits. Miesha aims to position herself close to, but not necessarily with the Lonsvell.
Crannoc hears Miesha's knock and steps out of the apothecary shop to watch the envoy from the huge city Neldfield approach and the apparent impending discussion of pack leadership for Aoswell. Sycamore seedling restless as he tries to stand unobtrusively but within earshot, looking absorbed in his own thoughts. Once the carriages are past, he creates a Minor Illusion of a tree or large barrel or pile of dirt or extension of a building wall. Anything that would look commonplace here. He stands behind it so he is not visible while watching and listening.
"Got it, thank you. We shall return with what we can find." Maggwyn takes her leave of the woman and heads over to Jasper.
"We have a job, now. Might make sense to include the others, so I'll ask. But there is a new addition to this town and others apparently aren't too keen on and our job is to infiltrate the home while they are off on this envoy. We are to gather any information that could incriminate him. Barring none, handwriting and their wax seal. There will be guards, and our pay is determined on what we deliver. I know you're in, so don't look like you're not."
As she is about to head over to the others, she hears Miesha's knock and watches as she heads off. Well, she'll ask her last... and then she sees Crannoc head out the door as well. So she heads over to Kass.
"There's a job tonight that Jasper and I are doing to help the proprietor of this place. It's a breakin to gather information, so not exactly on the up and up, are you in?"
Before leaving the shop, she waits to see what they say..
Kass considers it. "A break-in?"She murmurs. "Not exactly legal, I am guessing, but if the pay is good, I'm in. I'll need some time to reconfigure my armor to infiltration mode, though. Is this urgent or will I have time to prepare?"
Miesha and Crannoc - As you both place yourselves in your respective positions, one out of sight and the other in plain view, you watch the carriages come to a halt. Vara gives a nod in greeting to Miesha. The two surrounding carriages open and a total of ten soldier step out, although it is clear from Miesha's location that there are more inside. The soldiers form a line with a space around the middle carriage, which one of the soldiers opens. Another soldier proclaims, "Please welcome Director Alcorda!" A tall, half-elven woman steps out of the central carriage. She has sharp features and meticulously assembled attire, from her hairstyle to her stark grey suit with blue trim. In her hand is a clipboard with numerous papers on it, almost overloaded. Vara offers a modest bow, and others follow suit. Following this, Director Alcorda states in a precise and articulate voice: "You may rise."
Vara does so and offers a smile to the Director. "Welcome, Director. I am Vara Lonsvell, it is a pleasure to meet you. Thank you for visiting Aoswell." The Director looks pleased with the niceties presented to her but quickly addresses her business here. "Thank you, Mrs. Lonsvell. I think we best begin the tour and inspection so that the election may be held this evening. Guide us to our first destination." With that, Vara begins to lead the envoy that has already exited the carriages through the town.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Maggwyn looks at Kass curiously, "I'm not sure how much time you need, but we do need to get moving soon, the mark is in the envoy and we need to be done before they are finished touring this small town."
After discussing with Kass, she heads outside to look for Crannoc. She sees Miesha, but the warrior looks to be getting involved with the envoy? How interesting. But where was Crannoc?
Miesha watched the exchange from a small distance and thinks it a bit odd that the noble, highest ranking, family of this town would be bowing to what seemed to be a bureaucrat but then again Miesha was never one much for politics. Her time in the military taught her who to call sir, who she could order around, and ignored the civilian crap.
As the envoy moves on, Miesha stays put. There seemed to be no trouble or strife for her to involve herself in and the Lonsvell woman certainly made no indication that she wished Miesha to come closer. None of your business, she mentally reminds herself. You don't live here. So it is that with a mental shrug Miesha turns away from the town's political theater and looks to head back to her newfound companions...
Jasper grins at Maggwyn's report. "Well done, apprentice. They may welcome you into the family yet! If you are recruiting, perhaps we avoid those of the bronze complexion? I shall sharpen my claws so we can begin!"
