Shall we attack now, or wait until they are closer? If they don't see us we may be able to sneak attack. But if we have time to run into the passage and lock the door behind us we should.

Deekin, Kobold Bard (2) in Hoard of the Dragon Queen
(Dawn is hidden in the tree and undetected by the drakes coming around the corner. If you attack at range, you won't have disadvantage since the advantage from being hidden would cancel it out. But you'd no longer be hidden. Deekin's stealth check wasn't high enough to keep him hidden from them, so they can see him at the edge of the trees, as well as the last few people disappearing into them. Currently you can only see the 2 drakes coming around the corner. You don't know how many kobolds are in the church. The townsfolk are using full movement - dashing - to run toward the river, so 60ft per turn in combat time. Kobolds and drakes have the same 30ft movement speed as humans, so they can't catch up to the villagers, but can keep them from getting too far ahead. Maythus only has 25 ft movement speed, 50 when dashing, so eventually they can catch up to him if a chase goes long enough)
They can see me but do they know that I am not one of them? If they do not know my affiliation I am going to try and deceive them into thinking the refugees are running in the opposite direction.
Using Silent Image Pops creates a Huge Fog Cloud to cover the retreat of the townspeople. It will move with the people as they make it through the river and Pops will travel behind.
(It’s only a 15 foot cube, so not necessarily “huge”, but enough to cover everyone. The moving cloud will probably be pretty obvious where you are/going, but will at least provide some cover if they get close enough for ranger attacks)
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Dawn seeing the cloud quickly climvs down the tree Acrobatics13 and dashes after the party. If and when I catch up with Maythus, I will keep pace with him.

(With that roll deekin no, they definitely would not believe you were one of them. Not to mention they can SEE the refugees running into the trees, and probably hear them quite well as well. I'll assume you're running with the party in the fog cloud).
You burst through the trees, Rockcrusher working his way to the front of the group, Maythus and Deekin bringing up the rear. As the group nears the water, you hear a loud crack of Rockcrushers javelin breaking, letting the kobolds from the temple join the chase. You continue to run up the river and the raiders continue to give chase. You make it about 90 feet up the river before they burst out of the trees behind you. 16 kobolds slow in the chase and loose their slings to fire bullets randomly into the fog while the remaining raiders continue to chase at full speed (5 humans, 1 dragonclaw, and 2 ambush drakes).
(Since they can't see who they're targeting due to the fog cloud, I'm going to roll a d8 with each attack. Since Maythus, Dawn and Pops are bringing up the rear, it'll hvae a chance to hit any of them, otherwise it'll target one of the townsfolk. 1 = Pops, 2 = Dawn, 3 = Maythus, 4-8 = townsfolk. All with disadvantage due to the fog.)
(Looks like 3 damage to Pops, None to Dawn, 5 to Maythus, 3 dead townsfolk.)
A hail of bullets slams into the fog. Fortunately most of them don't hit anything, but a few do strike home. One of the kobolds trips as he launches his bullet and hits the raider in front of him in the back of the head instead.
You're about 100 feet away from the entrance to the tunnel (well, the back of the group is, maythus/pops/dawn. The front would be about 85 feet away)
Dawn will keep running at the back of the group, when we reach the point where the people are going through the tunnel i will turn around and get ready to cover the retreat
Rockcrusher will continue leading the villagers to the entrance, it was single file inside we can lock the door and make a stand at the far end where they can only go one at a time.

You continue to sprint back towards the tunnel, making it about halfway there before another round of bullets falls on the group. The kobold who got shot in the back of the head turns and slashes with his dagger at the one that shot him. Attack: 12 Damage: 6, slicing through his throat and dropping him. The other kobold slices back: Attack: 19 Damage: 5The rest of the kobolds advance as far as they can before firing again. This time, with the cloud of fog no longer concealing the group, the kobolds focus their shots on the townsfolk. The rest of the raiders continue chasing the group at full speed.
(Back of the party - maythus and dawn - are now 50 feet from the grate. Kobolds are 120 feet away from the party now. Rest of the raiders are 90 feet from the party)
(Front of the party is 35-40 feet from the grate. Everyone can make it inside in one more "round" of dashing before the kobolds can shoot again. And the kobold will be out of range for their slings after another double movement from the group anyway)
(I’m fudging it a bit, but yes, everyone can get inside. If nothing else, you all get to the entrance, the kobolds are out of range to attack for a round, the others can’t get in range to attack, and you all get in the next round before anything can preach you. I think I said 30 townsfolk to start? Would make it 21 remaining if so. On my phone atm so I don’t wanna fit back for it. I cans look tomorrow to be sure)

How many jn each party? How fast are the civilians traveling, will the Kolbolds coming out the back be able to catch up with them?
Perception 10 if that helps
