"If we've gotta do it - let us do it" Kvothe says. "But let's be more careful this time"he continues. He turns to Panawan and says "Could we stay in the jungle and work our way around the edge?"
"Of course you can but the jungle is difficult terrain at best and it would be slow going but it would be safer than running into the clearing," Panwan says.
Krav has lowered his book and is watching this exchange.
He nods at Kvothe.
"If we take them one at a time with ranged attacks, we should be able to get it done without trouble."
"The only way you'd be able to use ranged weapons is by shooting through the clearing and not everyone would be able to stand at the opening to shoot. Maybe 3 people could be standing by the opening. If you try and use ranged weapons in the dense jungle like it was you'd be putting yourself at a disadvantage."
OOC: After Kvothe introduces himself, but preferably not next (though, it looks like only a few of us are going to do it :( ) ...
Yellow doesn't stand, but looks around the group to catch their eyes. One arm is draped over one raised knee while the other paw is playing with her dagger. "My name is Chevall Yellow on the Sea. I grew up in Port Nyanzaru. I love Chult and am faithful to Ubtao." She does the customary hand gesture you have seen several times. "When the Order came to the island, I saw it as an opportunity to help my country, so I joined. Before that, I helped keep the law in town. Ubtao has gifted me with a few abilities. I ... can sense holy and unholy presences if I concentrate. And I have limited healing abilities. Sometimes Ubtao surprises me with a new blessing." A slight smile appears, almost as if she is remembering an unspoken joke. "The reason I joined the Order is to rid Chult of this grave threat: these undead hoards. And while you are here, I will strive to protect you — with my sword and with Ubtao's blessing."
OOC2: Before or after she speaks, Ezio does notice Yellow glancing at the sword, but she does not say anything about it.
OOC3: After the group begins talking about going back to the clearing ...
"I have a couple javelins," Yellow offers, "but I would rather attack with my sword. Any of you who would rather use the javelins may have them."

"Those man-eaters aren't the problem, as Krav said. You say you can handle the tree, and I'm certain you are at least capable, but none of us, you included, were able to prevent Vyth's death. I'm also certain that had any of us been in his place, you included, they would have died just as he did. What makes you so certain that you'll be able to handle the tree this time?" Ezio says to the guide.
"Nonetheless, this is a perfect time to better hone our strategy and interoperability. We know the enemy, terrain, and conditions under which we'll be fighting intimately, though we don't know the full capabilities of that tree. That wasn't like any ent I've seen before, maybe it was some kind of awakened tree?" Ezio searches his knowledge of such things.

"Regardless, we still need a better plan going into this engagement. Panwan, your role will be the most crucial in this fight, so I'd certainly like to hear how you plan on engaging that tree. Its biggest threat is its reach and power which can be easily accounted for if you had some way of immobilizing it...do you? As for the man-eaters it will be easy to keep our distance regardless of whether we plan to engage them from within the clearing or the jungle, so, again, it comes down to how much of a threat the tree will present inside the clearing. It is worth noting that those of us with spells need not worry about disadvantaged aim with spells that manifest directly on or nearby an enemy. Unfortunately, I have no such spells yet, but I am the most mobile of us and the most damaging at range, though Panwan could be argued to have that distinction, so I can account for myself."
"I have another idea that may keep us entirely safe from the man-eaters. Could the trees around the clearing bare our weight? I doubt the man-eaters are capable of climbing, so those of us with ranged abilities could simply climb a tree and safely engage from above without the disadvantage of shooting through the jungle growth or having to fear the man-eaters. I have a rope and grappling hook to aid those of inferior upper body strength. Of course, that depends on the plan for dealing with the tree, as climbing to a safe height would make one an easy target for it."
Nature/History (for remembering/judging if the trees surrounding the clearing are climbable): 4
"So Panwan, as this plan of action is primarily your suggestion, I care not if we lose a few days, and your part in this plan will be the most important, what will you be doing to stop that tree?"
"So Panwan, as this plan of action is primarily your suggestion, I care not if we lose a few days, and your part in this plan will be the most important, what will you be doing to stop that tree?"
"What will I be doing to stop the tree? My job, that's what. Any other objections?"Panwan says with annoyance in his voice.
Panwan looks around the group and shrugs. "I guess we can go do this, let's go."
Panwan leads the way back towards the clearing of death and you notice it exactly how you left it. Vyth's body is the latest of casualties of the trees and man-eaters laying amongst the corpses in the clearing. You look at the tree and you cannot tell it from any other tree in the world. You know it can come to life and kill but at the moment it just looks like a very old ancient tree.
The bodies of the various victims are still in the same spot and the grisly body of Vyth is close by and you can see just how dangerous the tree can be. Panwan stands near the opening waiting for the others to do whatever plan they wish to do.
Kvothe approaches the clearing as stealthily as possible. He then holds up his hand to the party - palm outwards - and points to his eyes. He searches the clearing and the edges of the jungle to see how many of the Venus Fly-traps he can see - expecting to see 4 - and the location of the Killer Tree
Once he spots the Venus Fly Traps he holds up the number of fingers for the number he has spotted. He points them out and the location of the Killer Tree. He then holds up the Index and Middle Finger on his Right hand pointing at the ground and he moves them back and forth (as if they were walking).
Kvothe will make his way around the clearing about 5 feet inside the jungle. He will take the route which has the least number of the Venus Fly Traps and is furthest from the Killer Tree. If there are equal numbers he will travel in a clockwise direction. When he comes close to a Venus Fly Trap he will step 10 feet further into the jungle. At all times he is watching the clearing the trees above and where he is placing his feet.
"I will attack the tree when it awakens. Go do your thing." Panwan whispers to the group.
I wanted to add, there are many trees around here but if you wish to climb up one you would need to make a DC 12 perception check to find one close by the would have branches you could perch from to attack and then you would need to make a strength/athletics check of DC 13 to climb it.
Kaslo whispers "Let us remember, our fight is not with the plants in this jungle, but with the undead scourge inhabiting it. I say we do what we must to get through this clearing, but not go out of our way looking for fights."

OOC: Just call me Marty McFly; I keep going back in time. Before the party returned to the clearing ...
As everyone expresses their opinion, led by Kvothe, to skirt the clearing, fighting only the Venus Fly Traps necessary to make it around to the other side and continue on, Yellow's tail begins whipping back and forth more and more violently. Her eyes are downcast, watching the dagger spin and turn in her paw. She is one of the last to stand and gather her things. She says quietly, "I'm sorry, brother." Following behind the group, she wields a javelin instead of her longsword.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
OOC: Before departing the short rest area.
Ezio removes his rope from his pack and slings the coil diagonally about his chest. He was about to slide the magic longsword between one of the loops of rope to hold in place on his back when he noticed Yellow looking at it closely. Seeing the mundane longsword at her hip, he smiled and flourished the sword until he held it with the hilt towards the tabaxi. "Consider it a gift, freely given." He said with a smile.
OOC: At the clearing
Ezio follows Kvothe and Kalso around the clearing to the right. Conjuring a mage hand, he sent it to retrieve the wand from the dead magic user.
I can't post until you guys do something. I need to know how close you're getting to the trap. They are blended in with the brush and vines so you really don't have clear shots at it unless you make a clearing. The jungle is very dense, difficult terrain, half movement. You can barely see inside the clearing. Little bits here and there. As it stands everyone would have disadvantage on all attack rolls. Ezio your mage hand would have a hard time getting stuff if you're in the dense jungle
Ezio's mage hand tries to untie the wand from the belt but the knot is just too tough for the hand to handle as it hovers in place near the dead wizard.
Panwan looks at Yellow and Kaslo in the middle of the opening with annoyance and shrugs while they are waiting for someone to do something.
"If we've gotta do it - lets do it" Kvothe says. "But let's be more careful this time" he continues. He turns to Panawan and says "Could we stay in the jungle and work our way around the edge?"
