At some point during their watch (before he falls asleep, apparently), Zachariah approaches Krav, speaking quietly. "I pray your generosity toward the strangers is not wasted. I ... " Zachariah looks at the ground as he continues, "am feeling a little convicted by your act. My life's purpose has been to serve others since I was very young." He looks at the Dwarf with almost pleading eyes. "When I heard them speaking Abyssal ... And what little I could make out of their conversation sounded ... dangerous, I guess I would say." Looking down again, he admits, "I guess I acted with prejudice. I wasn't going to say they couldn't stay, but I am glad they left." At that, he looks around at the dark jungle. "I do fear they might return, however, with foul intent."
"Wait!" Krav says loudly after watching them go for a few seconds.
He runs to the group and pulls out 6 days' worth of rations, holding them out to the lady.
"It's not much, but I can only spare some."
He hands them his extra waterskin, too. (It's full)
Krav then walks back to the camp, ready to take second watch.
The lady takes the food and waterskin from Krav and bows deeply with a smile. A tear runs down her cheek. "Thank you, kind stranger. Food is all we asked of you."She looks over at Zachariah and scowls before she turns back to Krav. "All we asked for was a little help and we get threats instead by some of your people. I wish you luck on your journeys and I hope nothing dangerous befalls you."
The lady slips the food into her pack and they head back out into the jungle.
Krav looks up at the tall aasimar, looking a little embarrassed. He reaches up to pat him on the shoulder, but changes his mind almost immediately, seeing the impossibility of doing so.
"I didn't know they were speaking abyssal," he says sheepishly.
"Knowing that, and with the blood on their blades, I don't blame you at all for being on your guard."
Krav gestures toward his axe with a smile.
"If they come back to fight, I'm sure we'll be ready!" he finishes, then looks into the bushes intently.
Passive insight of 12 or higher tells Zachariah that Krav is obviously not sure what else to say.
Kaslo approaches Zach, "What was that all about? What did you say that upset them so? They were just tired travelers, and we just sent them most likely to their deaths."
Zachariah turns to Kaslo with wide eyes. "Good cleric, I'm not sure that's true. I overheard them speaking in Abyssal as they approached. Something about vengeance and a meal and ... maybe something about 'dead or alive' ... It all sounded very dangerous to me. I did try to get counsel from Zee, but she said it was up to me." He chances a quick glance over at Zee before looking back at Kaslo. "What I said to her was 'Vengeance is mine says the Lord'. It's from the scriptures. I wanted to show her that I could understand their speech. I asked her why they were in the jungle. I was hoping to learn more by catching her off guard." He looks away and lowers his voice. "I did not mean to threaten her." After a second, he looks back at Kaslo. "I was just telling Krav that I pray that his good deed was not in vain. But I am afraid their intentions were not pure, and that we are still in danger of an attack." He screws up his face. "This is why I was so conflicted. I don't want to falsely accuse them, but I wanted to protect all of you at the same time! But I was afraid to just say something outright — to give you all of the information so you could make the decision. I didn't want to make the situation worse by talking about them in front of them."
I need everyone to make four survival checks please if you don't mind. Also. If you wish to talk amongst yourselves and say stuff this is the time. The guides are all sleeping so they won't answer any questions. I will be posting tomorrow morning when I get home from work so about 9 am EST. It won't be a big deal if not everyone makes the survival checks. You'll understand in the morning.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Following post 632, Vart steps out of the jungle and crosses to where he sees Zachariah explaining his actions to Krav and Kaslo. “FriendZachariah I think you made the right call. Nobody keeps their hood up as red robes did if they are not trying to hide something”.
He then turns in for the night.
In the morning after his morning ritual, Vart goes fishing.
"Hmm. Well I know you only acted in the best interest of the group, but transparency with them from the beginning could have led to a different outcome. If they do indeed mean us harm, I would prefer to have them within our view instead of skulking in the shadows and getting the drop on us. If they are as they say, lost travelers, well let us pray the gods watch over them."
Tap finishes his shift then beds down after waking his replacement.
