((150 feet of rope and 40 pitons ought to be enough. Also I just realized I have like, next to no money, so hopefully Mirabel doesn't mind pitching in since I can't convince anyone of ANYTHING.))
((Oh this is going to be fun.....))
For Kathra and Mirabel:
You matter-of-factly rattle off a short list of desired goods to the man behind the counter and offer up that there should be some discount or another. Helpington flashes you a rather disarming smile and what follows is a whirlwind of salesmanship the likes of which you have never seen before. "Ah yes, our brave adventurers! Grassly came by earlier and said you'd be along to pick up some supplies, most of which should be billed to the Elder out of gratitude for your service! Here at Helpington's we carry a wide selection of all-weather gear for only the bravest and most intrepid of explorers. Heavy coats lined with the finest ridge-ram wool, locally sourced, of course; snow shoes fresh of the weaver for those very unpredictable avalanches that have been reported this season; and we stock the most well crafted Climber's Kit in multiple colors. Then there are also the particulars; your tents, shovels, fine silk ropes, lanterns, etc. You'll find that here at Helpington's we strive to make sure nobody leaves unprepared!"
In astoundingly short order you find yourselves heaped with all manner of gear and fishing through your pouches for coin. When all is said and done you find yourselves walking out of Helpingtons carrying five sets of cold-weather fur coats, three 50ft sections of silk rope, two sacks of 25 pitons, two 2-person tents, five days of rations for five people, one hooded lantern, one grappling hook, two Climber's Kits (one blue and one green), and a novelty flask embossed with a pair of clasping hands and the word's "Helpington's: Being your Refuge since DR 1455!" While you feel the weight of your new gear press down upon you, your pockets do feel a bit lighter. The climbers kits each had a 10 gold "rental deposit" that Helpington assured you would be quickly refunded when you returned them back to him undamaged after your adventure. As such Kathra is now missing her 8 gold and Mirabel is short 12 as well.
Kathra is 100% certain she was taken advantage of at some point in there, but she'll be damned if she can figure out how. After all, the flask had been such a bargain - and the climber's kits would be easy enough to return in working condition.
((I believe we are done at the sheriff’s unless Jossu has anything more to share. If so, I will head back to Davy’s Lamp to get a hot meal. Do we have a map of the mountain pass area by chance?))
Gavin, Thont, and Peren say their goodbyes at the Sheriff's station and head south down the main road to the familiar glow of The Davy Lamp. Entering inside, they find Kathra and Mirabel sorting out piles of gear across two or three tables. Kathra has a stern look on her face as she looks over the goods, like she's trying to mentally calculate something and no matter what the numbers always seem to come out in an amiable sum that still just feels off somehow. Mirabel is less helping and more sitting back in a chair and looking deeply into the crystal shard he got from Nana Ironeye's. Armond sees you three come in and taps the metal plate by the kitchen door three times. You're sure that food and drink will be forthcoming soon.

((Hey Meta, I just want to say you have done a great job with this adventure. I also want to thank fellow players as I love the feel to everyone’s characters so far. Way different than playing in person. Find myself making up voices for how each person sounds :) I am having fun and can’t wait to see what is up on the mountain. Something tells me there are a few surprises in store for out hearty adventurers))
((Yeah, the PBP format really does wonders for gameplay. It can be pretty slow at times, waiting for people to get a post in here and there, but that also means you have time to think up better lines for your characters to say than just on the spot conversation and the DM can really flesh out descriptions better as I generally have a while to consider your surroundings rather than have to make stuff up off the top of my head. You guys have been great so far. This adventure is really shaping up to be much cooler than its basic design skeleton thanks to your interactions with your environment. ))
“Excellent job with gear! That was more than I anticipated.” Gavin says as he sits down next to Kathra. “I assume you can give us a crash course on how best to use the climbing gear Kathra?” He looks over to Maribel, “Any thoughts on that damned crystal or how we prevent those things from growing inside of us? I can cure the occasional disease, Tempus willing,, but not sure if that qualifies.”
”We didn’t really learn much more to what’s going on up there, other than the guides bodies were looted but not eaten. That rules out animals only, definately something evil is in play up there. I hope everyone gets a good rest tonight it may be the last one we have for a bit. I for one, plan on stuffing myself with some of Armond’s stew. Not a huge fan of fish when I have choices.” With that said he can feel his mouth salivating. Immenent danger makes some people nervous, it makes Gavin hungry. Food seems to calm his nerves, and he is definately feeling a bit nervous about not knowing what we will find...nothing good that’s for sure.
Thont thanks our outfitting members inspects the rope to see if it would hold him, but being particularly bad at physics, would always come to the same conclusion that he would be fine one way or another and demonstrating a trust in his companions. He also perks up at the idea of stew and partakes.
Has Thont seen any beggars or homeless? If so, he asks for a second helping of stew or leaves half of his own, and walks it outside to anyone he saw. While it seems he would give this selflessly, he also asks them to keep an eye out for anything strange.
((Same feelings folks - I worry being able to get on here as often with work et al, but right now the pace is doable.))
Thinking back, you haven't really seen any beggars or homeless here in Refuge. Maybe the town is just small enough that these sorts of things don't happen. Maybe there's enough work and bunk housing at the stonefruit orchard that it keeps the poor off the streets, you're not sure. The only person you've run across that might be without a permanent residence these days is Jossu. You get the feeling that he lived at Lliira's Temple until its destruction. However, you also think that it's likely that Harken is caring for him until the temple can be rebuilt.
Kathra shrugs. "In my tribe, every man has their task and place. We take care of our own. It is no wonder to me that a community can function in such a manner." There's a pause as she smiles slightly before adding. "I suppose it is a surprise to see it in more 'civilized' areas."
She looks over to Mirabel as he gazes into the crystal. "Do not fall in, sorcerer."
((Apologies in advance if I'm a bit scarce the next couple of days. Business folk from out of town visiting mean I have to at least provide a modicum of entertainment (also being in meetings with them all day means it's slightly harder to sneak in a post here and there.)))
((Once Mirabel posts, we'll call it a night and cut to morning, then if nobody has any in-town plays, I'll narrate the beginning of your journey up the mountain.))

"The mongoose blew out its candle and was asleep in bed before the room went dark." —Llanowar fable
You're not really sure the ramifications of interactions with creatures from the Astral Sea, or even its darker reflection, the Far Realm. Honestly it's amazing enough that you seem to be holding a solid piece of the Astral Sea in your hand at all. Up until now you've only read about this sort of thing in dusty old books and heard the occasional tale from eccentric magical theorists.
You all filter to your rooms for the night one-by-one, intent on getting the most of your rest in a fine bed before the next few days of roughing it in the mountains.
The morning finds you waking up to the smells of breakfast and a mix of trepidation and excitement. As you come out of your rooms and gather around a large table with your supplies and map, Armond exits the kitchen with a wonderful breakfast of spiced porridge bowls with sliced stonefruit and plates of pancakes laced with boar bacon. He sets the spread down before you and gives you a warm smile. "Eat up folks. Looking at that Helpington tack your friend brought back last night, this'll likely be the last good meal you get until you come down from the Storm Horn."

((Meta - If we are going into the mountains, will we need to get cold weather gear, coats, boots, hoods, scarfs, snow shoes, etc...))
((It'd be advisable, yes. I'll have the shop-post for Kathra and Mirabel up shortly.))
Kathra is 100% certain she was taken advantage of at some point in there, but she'll be damned if she can figure out how. After all, the flask had been such a bargain - and the climber's kits would be easy enough to return in working condition.

((We'll assume there is a roughly drawn replica of a basic map in the pile of stuff Kathra and Mirabel bring back.))
((I'll post the gathering at the Davy Lamp next.))

Huh. Thont points this out to the others, just to share the observation.

Peren says to the group “good food, good drink and tomorrow morning we start up the mountain”
He also thinks Kathra and Mirabel for gathering up the equipment and after eating retires for the night
((Once Mirabel posts, we'll call it a night and cut to morning, then if nobody has any in-town plays, I'll narrate the beginning of your journey up the mountain.))
Mirabel gives some serious thought as to how one best avoids tentacular invasion.
