“Here to sign up to help in the mine sir,” Duncan says, slipping back into the familiar military style of speech. “Though we aren’t with the guild, we’re capable to defend ourselves and others.”

FEATURE: MILITARY RANK
You have a military rank from your career as a soldier. Soldiers loyal to your former military organization still recognize your authority and influence, and they defer to you if they are of a lower rank. You can invoke your rank to exert influence over other soldiers and requisition simple equipment or horses for temporary use. You can also usually gain access to friendly military encampments and fortresses where your rank is recognized.
Kasbis nods and says “We can assist with the problem in the mines. May we have a badge to investigate and assist you in the resolution of the problem? We are interested in obtaining the reward for this task. Is this where we sign up? Please, have no doubt about our abilities…” Kasbis locks eyes with them with a grim look on his face. Gaz slithers up his shirt and comes out at the neck, looking forward and trying to see what the hubbub is about.

A wizard is never late, nor is he early, he arrives precisely when he means to.
At first he looks to Duncan "Ah a military man like myself. Well we do need all the help we can get, but know that the mine itself can be dangerous with unstable ground and the possibility of collapse. That was why we wanted skilled miners. Over the past 5 days I had to bury some men and women I have worked with for years. There is an unknown threat down mine shaft 4. Are you sure you want to go down there to help us?"
Distracted by stowing away her purchases, and a little intimidated by the first guard Aisha has been following along keeping quiet. Now that they're with someone willing to listen she speaks up. "We're very capable of handling dangerous situations. And Kas here has mining experience, he even owns one, we're just not part of the local guild so the guard at the entrance shouted us down and wouldn't listen."
Captain Kadris rifles through his desk and comes out with mining badges for the party "Since your so determined here take these badges and show them to my guards by the gate. Then speak to Thalgor as he is the foreman for the miners."
Kasbis picks up his badge and puts it on his cloak, Gaz curls around and looks at it, hisses, and then disappears inside his cloak. “Right. Guards. Then Thalgor. And the reward is 500 gold pieces, correct?” Kasbis straightens himself, all business.

"Thanks for the warning sir, we'll be alert. And we'll do our best to find what's causing you troubles in 4," Duncan replies briskly, ready to head back and then downwards, looking for a bit of adventure.
The guard at the gate sees the badge and then calls out "open the gates" which then creak open revealing the large mine entrance and Thrumbar's mining barracks.
It is a stone building that blends into the surrounding mountain. There are many miners going about their business.
There is a short stocky man barking orders from within the barracks.
Aisha heads towards the barracks and knocks at the opening holding up the new badge, "Hello, we've been sent bay Captain Kadris to aid with the threat in mine shaft four. Am I correct in assuming you're foreman Thalgor?"
"Yeah I am and each of you don't look like much of a miner. That man must be going senile. Well you are here so lets put you to work. Come follow me" says Thalgor.
He then gestures for the party to follow him and to stand on the elevator that uses pulleys and gears. Once everyone is on he pulls a lever and the elevator descends deep into the dark. Once you reach the bottom you can hear all the miners working away. He then leads the party to the barricaded entrance of mine shaft 4.
"There will be no back up once you enter mine shaft 4 and I will firmly keep this entrance closed unless I hear the passphrase Lapis Lazuli. Now good luck and I mean it"
He then signals the guards to bring over a lantern for each party member "Here you will need this. These will burn for 6 hours and here are 3 extra oil flasks for each of you. Now are you ready? As soon as I open those metal doors you need to head in and then I am going to slam it shut"
"We'll find what's causing the troubles down here," Duncan says, taking the lantern and extra oil. He then stands ready for the others to agree and to lead into the soon to be locked off mine.
Kasbis takes the lantern and the oil, nodding silently as they are given. He says “Do you know anything about the dangers that lie in shaft 4? Any clues that you can give us? If we clear out the danger, we are entitled a reward, yes?”

"Beware the shadows, they have come alive down down Mine Shaft 4. At first it started as strange whispers in an unknown tongue then the accidents started happened more often. In the end it was just outright slaughter. That was why we closed Mine Shaft 4. Yes the reward in the notice is 500gp paid by Kadris." says Thalgor.
Aisha shrugs at the comment at not looking like much of a miner, "But how many miners have been unable to solve the issue so far? Perhaps what you need is a different perspective?"
"I appreciate the heads up on the shadows, all information will make us better at the job."
The narrow tunnel is pitch black as it leads the party to an open area. After a while there is no sound beyond the crunch of your shoes on loose gravel and the sound of your own heart. The air feels heavy to breathe in and there is metallic tang in the air.
There is also the soft sputtering of the lantern flame is the party chooses to use them.
What do you do?

Barring any other questions Thalgor order the guards to open the heavy door and to clamp it shut as soon as the party is on the other side.
