"It's neck, buck!" Roo cries as he takes a harder look at the devil. "It's wearing something around its neck! What is SQUAWK!"
The spin pierces Roo's side, just below the armpit where there's a gap in the armor, and blood runs freely down. He crams his sword hand under there to staunch the bleeding...
Corlith watches as his companions enter the fray, striking out at the fiend from all directions. He also, quickly scans the area, ensuring no other fiends are present that cannot be seen before returning his attention to the one that can.
"Your name has been requested, unless I should continue to call you whelp?", he taunts the fiend once more in it's native Infernal tongue. "Be quick now, before my companions dismember you and tear down that repulsive idol of yours", he adds also in infernal and pointing at the statue, once more imbuing his words with spite.
Persuasion (if allowed as a free action): 11+7=18 Action: Cast Vicious Mockery on fiend. Wilfred's attacks hit the devil pretty hard, changing it's focus from the tiefling to papa.
Reya hears Roo's calls and looks, "Why, its a smallish shield and it, it has the same emblem that your armor has Roo!"
Taking the hit from Corlith, but mainly ignoring the man as it's anger rises from being bloodied, the barbed devil attacks Wilfred, first with it's spined tail (12 dam) the striking out with both claws, each landing solidly upon the fighter (10 dam).
Archie continues her circumference of the beast and comes up behind it, being particularly careful of its spiky protrusions. She sees its tail strike out at Wilf and as she is flanking with the man figures she could help him out, she swings with her light hammer, keeping it firmly in hand this time and focussing on the beasts tail (23to hit, 6 bludgeon dam) she then attempts to stick it with her dagger too (14 to hit, 3 piercing dam).
Dissatisfied with the amount of damage she is doing, Archie decides to put away her weapons and smack her gauntleted fists together, they crackle and flash as lightning ignites over their surface.
Virro walks forward 10 feet to the south, maintaining his lightning connection to the demon and shocking it, but not as strong as what he would like. “We will teach it, yes well will…” he seems to say to himself, trying to focus on it.
Witch bolt : Still attached, does 1 point of lightning damage to the demon. (Round 2/10)
"That's it, Virro," Reed says. "But what are we teaching it? This would definitely have been a more interesting school than I had. Though maybe old Mr Underhill going on about how deep to plant onion bulbs would bore this one to death."
Reed looks for a spot through the legs and arms of the melee in front of him, searching for a weak spot in this nasty devil.
He lets an arrow fly, then dips into the shadows again for cover.
Short Bow: (17+7=) 24 to hit for (3+5 plus Sneak Attack of 4+2 =) 14 damage
As the witch bolt sends it's lightning damage from Virro to the barbed devil, it slightly winces at the pain.
Reed's arrow finds it purchase and it is now sticking out of the devils side, the black icor of blood oozing out around the protrusion.
Looking down at what hit it, the devil misses that Reya is ready and she hits it with her long sword for a critical hit right below its neck, also cutting the cord that was holding the shield on and it clatters to the ground. Though the both hits were resisted, you can tell that the creature is struggling. So surprised by the sound of the shield on the ground, Reya misses her next attack, but sinks her shortsword into it's thigh with her off-hand.
The fiend is in danger of dying when Roo slips off the side of Glory of Morning and moves across the room. He slings his shield, but keeps the Owl's Talon in his dominant hand as he approaches, his head jerking from side to side as he focuses his vision from the fallen necklace to the fiend that had been wearing it.
"And what do we have here, buck?" Roo says, scooping up the necklace while twirling his sword in the other hand so that the pommel faces his foe. He swings the pommel right into the beast's knee, making sure he has its attention. The shield, sized for him, swings by its broken chain in his other hand. He addresses his team mates before he addresses the devil. "Don't kill it. Remember my armor, Odious? Remember the one you killed here who was wieldingthis shield? Tell us where you got Fog' Horn's shield. Tell us why you have it."
Attack roll w/ Advantage: 21 to hit, 7 damage (non-lethal)
Wilfred takes the heavy hits from the devil and isn't looking good. His head is reeling from the hits. He registers Roo' talking about a necklace. And then he sees the others attacking, and the necklace falls. He starts to swing his Glaive as Roo' attacks, but he registers Roo's words too late. "Hup... Crap." He was going for a cut to try to decapitate the devil with all his strength, but manages to turn the Glaive slightly. Instead of taking the devil's head off, there is a sickening crack as the side of the Glaive impacts the side of the devil's face. The devil crumples to the ground. "Ahh, umm, sorry Roo'. I was trying to hold back at the last second. Is it still alive? How do we even tell?"
Attack: To Hit 20, Damage, 15 Slashing Non-Lethal.
Just before Wil smacks the devil in the face, he looks to Roo in great surprise, “How do you know my name?!” He demands and then crumples after Wils blow.
Roo looks down at the fiend on the ground and then clicks his beak together, almost like 'tsk tsk tsk'.
"I knew it, buck!" He exclaimed, reaching into his belt for the manacles. He set to work cuffing the monsters hands behind his back. "Go on, then! Someone manacle this bastards ankles! He has answers!"
As he finishes cuffing Odious's wrists, he steps up onto his chest, and begins the bizarre up and down ass-bobbing ritual he'd done a few days before in the Dungeon of the Dead Three all over Odious's face.
"Reed, get in here and shut that door! Let's catch a breath. Oh, Virro, shock him! Buc-bagah! Wake this bastard up!"
Reed slips into the room, looking up and down the hallway first for any sign anyone was coming to investigate. He pauses at the sight of all the dead cultists on the ground and calls some of the others over to help drag them all inside before closing the door.
He then takes a few steps closer to the tied up devil in the middle of the room.
"Is this part of the teaching?" Reed asks good-naturedly. "I think I'd prefer if we just killed it."
Reed takes a look around the room for anything interesting that they might have missed during the fight (Perception: 17+7 = 24)
Corlith watches the others get to work putting manacles on the fiend and drag the cultists into the room. Physical labour really wasn't his wheel house, and it was obvious looking at his slight build compared to the others he would be of little use in that regard.
Instead he wanders over to the statue of who he assume is Zariel, after all the chanting.
"Whilst that thing and I were having our chat. Well, it wasn't really a chat, I was mainly just insulting it. I did tell it we would tear down this statue of who I guess is Zariel. I wouldn't want to have lied", he says looking back to the others.
"Just something to do before we leave. Now, Roo. Do you want some help getting answers out of this fiend? I can help you focus and I can also help with the interrogation too".
When the time comes, he will indeed help Roo focus, and assist perhaps talking to Odious in Infernal to help interrogate the fiend.
"wait how did you know it's name?" The duke asks perplexed.
Looking down at her crackling fists she seems a bit disappointed that she didn't get to use them, up until corlith mentions the statue, then she cheerfully goes on over and slams both fists into it lightning exploding around the surface of the stone depiction. (10 thunder damage total). If the statue is destroyed, Archie takes a seat and spends ten minutes ritually casting detect magic.
Reya sheathes her swords as the creature falls and helps the halfling drag in the corpses of the cultists, "Yeah, I agree with Reed.. wait, Roo, what the hell are you... gah!" and she abruptly turns away from whatever ritual the rooster is doing.
As Roo 'Stor does his ass dance on Odius's face, the barbs stick him in the rear, delivering 4 piercing damage.
Reya walks over to wear Corlith is and looks up at the statue, "How easy do you think it'll be to topple it?"then the lighting from Archie's gauntlets slam into the stature, making part of the facade crumble, but it still stands.
While the others deal with the statue, Reed finds two secret doors in the southwest part of the room. He opens each one and takes a look behind it to make sure there aren't a bunch of cultists or other devils waiting to jump out at them.
"Asserting my dominance!" Roo says to Reya in answer, his ass bobbing up and down. "I have no love for your false idols, but is destroying one a good idea?"
Roo yelps when the barb sticks in his ass, and squawks loud a few times, making the alarm sound of his people as he puffs up and jumps down off of the body of the fiend.
"How did I know?" Roo says, his head cocking from side to side as he studies Odious, then Archie. "I'll tell you later. Not here. Not now. Let's see..."
He lays one hand on the creatures chest, and a little golden energy washes down his arm and into the demon, before stepping back and shaking himself, the same golden energy washing over his whole body. When the demon wakes up, Roo is staring down into his face.
"You must ask yourself...what did I do to you while you were napping?" Roo said, his voice low and as menacing as he can make it. As Corlith leans over to assist Roo, the Gallus continues his line of inquest. "It seems you're already familiar with my friend here. I want you to consider your situation. You are helpless and at our mercy. I have another friend over there..."
Roo gestures at Virro...
"...who is quite the connoisseur of limbs. Specifically, he likes removing them. Your friends Amrik and Thurstwell? He would be delighted to show you the fingers and thumbs he kept as we got answers from them, too. Tell us, Odious, how you became such a well received guest of the House Vanthampur. Tell us about what happened to Elturel, and what Thavius Kreeg had to do with it. And tell us why the Duchess Vanthampur would want the same thing for Baldur's Gate, and how you plan to make that happen."
Roo pauses and hefts the shield that Odious had been wearing around his neck.
"Then we're going to have a very, very personal conversation about how you got this."
Odious coughs, his voice sounding raspy as Roo gives him back 1 hp. He looks around wildly at his predicament, struggling with the manacles at his wrists. With Corlith and Roo standing over him, he stays where he is. He glances over towards Virro when Roo gestures towards him.
"Thurstwell? Who is that? Amrik? He's a fool, I'm not surprised you collected from that weasel." then he narrows his eyes a bit, "Answers? And again, how do you know my name? Well received? Well, I'm an invited guest by the Duke." His eyes go a little wider as he hears you know about Elturel and Thavius as well. "Why? I don't know why, power I'm sure. Isn't that what all you puny humans, or people, want? What is the plan to make it happen to Baldur's Gate? You give me too much credit, I just helped fund the woman."
As the shield is thrust in his face, he shrinks back a bit seeing Roo's armor and Roo can see that the connection is made.
While Roo is questioning the devil, Reed has found two secret doors. Opening the one behind the tapestry, he finds a dark hallway. One that is not lit by the typical green lanterns and he does not smell or hear any sewer water back there either.
Opening the door between the west wall and the dais, Reed winces as the door scrapes against the stone floor. Looking inside he sees that this room is lit by a pair of tall wrought-iron candleholders in the northeast and southeast corners. Nine candles burn atop each one, casting flickering light across a claw-footed altar carved from a single block of obsidian, and which has a small angel-shaped flame erupting from its top. A gray-haired woman kneels before the altar.
Hearing the sound, the woman in fine clothes stands up and whirls at Reed. Narrowing her eyes, "You are an intruder!" and she attacks.
The woman lifts up her arm, "For Zariel!" she shouts, and sends two eldritch blasts towards the halfling. The first one sails right over Reed's head into the secret door he is holding open. The second finds it's target though (6 dam)
Archie hearing the fight perks up and tells out to the group "EVERYONE ATTACK" and then she rushes through, over to the secret door, shoving past Reed and coming face to face with the woman that she is disguised as, "hello we met your son's,(punch in the face! 26 to hit, 6 thunder dam) they've been telling us that you've been bad,(second punch in the face 22 to hit, 8 thunder dam) and then we killed them, apart from mortlock, he betrayed you." As the punches connect they leave some static crackles of electricity shooting over the dukes body. (Duke has disadvantage to attack anyone other than Archie)
"It's neck, buck!" Roo cries as he takes a harder look at the devil. "It's wearing something around its neck! What is SQUAWK!"
