As evening fades into deeper night and the last of you find your rest, Berry sleeps peacefully under the stars up on deck and Doc in the mid-hold near Owlbear. The rest of you have found empty hammocks towards the back of the ship down in the crewberths. Davras, you note as you find your empty one that there are still 3 or 4 swinging slack without occupants...perhaps other crew members that are out enjoying the deep evening or skulking about...or maybe there just isn't enough crew to fill all of the crewberths. The captain did say the ship was shorthanded.
Regardless you swing into yours and find a peaceful sleep.
***
The following morning, you are awoken by the ringing of the duty bell. Crew members grumble as they swing out of their hammocks and make their way up on deck to report. As Latimer, Kirun, Davras, and Az'el do the same, you are met by four crew members standing in your way. One of them, the unpleasant orcish fellow from the previous day glares.
"What's your hurry mates? We didn't get to welcome you aboard proper like yesterday. We've been asked to make sure you know yer place here." Jaundiced Jape jeers, placing a hand on Az'el's chest and shoving lightly...not enough to move you, but definitely a sign of aggression.
The other three gathered likewise jeer and laugh. The rest of the crew, on their way up to the deck see that there is going to be a fight. Some, realizing that this is likely trouble hurry up the stairs to get as far away from it as possible. Others stop on the stairs, perhaps out of morbid curiosity or looking for some dark entertainment. You see Sandara among this number...looking worried and apparently uncertain about what to do. She has stopped on the stairs and appears to be waiting for now.
Jape continues, "Let's not be rude...allow me to introduce myself. I'm Jape...I'll be the one administering your beating this morning...along with my friends, Fipps Chumlet, " he indicates a stocky broad human with a large belly but thick arms that imply a powerful frame under the fat. "Aretta Bansion," An angry looking woman with large ears sticking out from her hair and a fierce look in her eyes nods as she cracks her knuckles. "and last but not least, 'Slippery' Syl Lonegan" the second woman and final of their number looks on boredly, but with a menancing air, she is also ready to fight if it comes to it. "I'm afraid you were too lazy this morning to rise with the bell and you are going to be late for duty muster...just a minute or so should do. So, do you want to stand and wait like good little bugs, or shall we do it the interesting way?" He shoves Az'el again, antagonizing and spoiling for a fight.
None of them have drawn weapons, apparently whoever put them up to this, and you have a few guesses, did remind them not there was to be no killing at least...it's going to be an old fashion fist fight instead.
***
Doc, as you awake with a crick in your neck to the sounds of the duty bell you rise to report on deck with the rest of the crew. As you head forward to the staircase, you notice several crewmembers making their way swiftly up on deck. A knot of others have formed in the stairway now heading down.
Berry, you awake with the sweet and salty smell of sea air having had a full and restful nights sleep. From on deck there is no indication of anything amiss, although as you wait around for a bit you begin to suspect that something is wrong. Where are all the people that you meet yesterday that were kidnapped with you? Why haven't they come up on deck yet. (If this becomes combat you will wait around on deck for 3 rounds before becoming suspicious, at which point we'll see what you do. If it lasts three rounds that is...we will see)
(To all except Berry, this isn't technically a fight yet...but it is a powder keg about to blow. If you want to kick it off yourself go ahead and roll initiative for me. Otherwise if someone wants to try to sweet talk their way out of this situation, I am open to seeing where that goes. Jape did give you a few options afterall...he is fine with you waiting until you are late without it coming to blows if you guys play along with that. If it does become a fight though, this is the situation you find yourselves in...)
Az’el would glare at Jape as the orc shoved him, taking a few steps back out of his reach after being shoved.
The dark elf looks over to Latimer, Darvas and Kirun. “If we don’t defend ourselves now or at least try, then it will most likely happen again.”
Berry woke with a headache as bad as the day before. Woah… that stuff… I really need to stay away from that rum. When they don’t poison me I do it for them…Berry looks around for his rigging crew to join and looks specifically for Kirun and finds almost everyone else but not him. “Where’s Kirun,” he asks around, “You know this bard from last night’s performance, have you seen him?”He asks the other riggers with a worry that his friends might be late for duty and risk punishment.
"Well, it has been a while since I've had a good beating, so maybe waiting around could be interesting. But then again, I really hate bullies... especially ones who seek to stand in my way. Let's get this thing started, shall we?" With that, Latimer claps his hands together, impossibly loud.
(ugg - rolled a 2 for initiative! Latimer's intention is to cast Thunderwave and see if he can push these guys out of the way with some incentive to back off for good)
A wave of thunderous force sweeps out from Latimer. Each creature in a 15-foot cube originating from you must make a Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes 2d8 thunder damage and is pushed 10 feet away from you. On a successful save, the creature takes half as much damage and isn't pushed.
In addition, unsecured objects that are completely within the area of effect are automatically pushed 10 feet away from you by the spell's effect, and the spell emits a thunderous boom audible out to 300 feet.

Doc awoke in the morning to the sound of the duty bell. Rolling over he finds he sleeps pretty good on that rum, but the rest of him isn't a fan. His back aches probably from the floor he tried to sleep on, he will have to make some modifications to his sleep arrangements going forward. His head kind was a little off and felt his body was a little sluggish. He will have to monitor his intake of that stuff better. He looks over at Owlbear, "Morning, uh Ow... Well what is your name, or at least what would you like me to call you?" Doc stands up and dust himself off a bit. He sees the goat and thinks best hook him back up. "What mischief did you get into last night?" Doc takes the mental note to make sure the goats are secure before falling asleep next time.
Thinking to himself, he realizes he doesn't know the meaning of the bell. It's clearly not for food as nothing is made yet. Must be a call to the deck, that's where he sees the other crew members going, so Doc tightens up his jacket and heads up to see what the fuss is about. Strange some members seem to be in more of a hurry then others.
Darvas will try and remember the empty hammocks in the evening, thinking little of it at the time. Assuming they are for additional crew.
When Jaundiced Jape confronts the group at first Darvas thinks it might be over the planted knife but he doesnt seem to address Darvas specifically. Perhaps this was something unrelated.
Either way he knew he was not good at fistfights, specially against a brute such as this orc. Darvas will try and take a step back, lining himself up with Latimer and Kirun at his side.
Look, we dont have to fight here. If we are late, you lot will be late as well.He looks to the others a moment seeing they are preparing for battle. We would all get punished..
Since it looks like his words are in vain he tries to size them up a bit and tries to determine his options in this battle. He tries to determine if there are any objects he could throw at them as improvised weapons. But the group of people in front of him seem to distract him to much to really spot anything quickly.
Az’el would respond to Darvas. “I have seen and know these kind all too well my friend.”
He would gesture at Jape and his band of brawlers.
“To garner their respect, if at all even possible, we must defend ourselves and hopefully win. I am no brawler myself but if we don’t try now, things may worsen for us later because of it.”
the Drow would then look around the area in attempt at finding a spot he may stealth, if necessary.
Darvas, several footlockers line the sides of the hold and there are the hammocks that drape from post to post...but at a quick inspection you don't see anything that you could use as an improvised weapon or to heave at someone. Based on the general attitude of these crew members, and the way the people you have been lumped in with are responding though, it does seem like this is going to escalate into actual combat...
(You have top of the initiative order, so if you would like to make the first swing you may...Grok and his group seem content to just hold you here until you make a hostile move.)
Initative order is
Initiative: Davras (21) Japes (16) Fipps & Kirun (15) Arretta, Syl, and Az’el (5) Latimer (2) Environment (0) {other crew members not in combat, etc.}
The way I do ties for initiative is you alternate who goes first between rounds with players getting the advantage...so Kirun and Az'el will go before their ties this round and then after next round.
The pirates for now seem content to stand off with you here until you are all late unless someone makes the first move. We know Latimer is going to light this powderkeg with a thunderclap when it comes round to his turn...unless one of the others of you kicks it off first. The pirates will be holding their actions for some undisclosed stimulus...if you trigger it then I will let you know and post an action that will take place immediately before your post resolves...it is highly unlikely that it will cause your post to not resolve though.

Darvas doesnt want to get beaten up so decides to act first. He takes a bag from his belt and looks to the group of attackers and says Fine, but you asked for it
He starts to empty the bag rolling out his ball bearings, trying to cover the 10ft area where Aretta and Fipps are standing (and the 2 empty spots next to them to cover the 10ft square). Many little metal balls start to bounce on the wooden deck and slowly roll and bounce towards the goons.
Hopefully it will either embarace or slow them. Darvas then steps back 5ft to stand between to Kirun and Latimer.
Action: roll the ball bearings to cover Aretta and Fipps (A creature moving across the covered area must succeed on a DC 10 Dexterity saving throw or fall prone. A creature moving through the area at half speed doesn't need to make the save.) Movement: 5ft backwards
the Drow would then look around the area in attempt at finding a spot he may stealth, if necessary.
(rolled a 10 perception.)
Realized I never responded to this...
Looking around Az'el doesn't find to many options when it comes to hiding...the pillars that hold up the deck above probably provide the most cover, but they are each only about 2 and a half feet in diameter. Even if you could get entirely behind it from the view of a single individual, they would have to have severe object permanence issues to forget you were there. There is the port hole heading down into the lowest deck of the ship which is right below Fipps Chumlett's feet. That's likely the bilges...if you could get down there perhaps there is a place to hide. Otherwise your best bet is probably to try to get past them and stealth behind the staircase leading up into the mid-hold.

Az’el would accept the haymaker to his body or face, offering a small grunt in return of the blow before swinging his balled up fist back at Japes in attempt at hitting him back.
(rolled 14 +2 prof +2 str = 18 to hit, 3 damage to Japes, unless Fipps does something to stop it.)
Jape Saving Throw: 15 (in the game log) "Scum that'll be choking you an' yer lovlies soon enough." Jape laughs off the effect of the casting without issue.
Fipps attempts to move forward to get himself out of the hazardous area: Dex save of 10 -nearly failed!
He does step on a few errant bearings as he makes his way out, and skids once, but manages to keep his feet. He then closes to Davras, the one that imperriled his step to begin with before sending a swing at him.

Aretta Bansion attempts to clear the ball bearings, heading to the starboard wall of the hold to get up next to Az'el (Dex save 19, they are rolling really well). She handly navigates past the bearings to do so, upon arrival she kicks Az'el in the shin.

Yes...you can...let's roll some saving throws.
They both drank rum last night, so they have disadvantage on these con saves...so good for them.
Fipps: Failed with a 5
Syl: Failed with a 6
As the blast of energy flows out of Latimer in waves, both Fipps and Syl are thrown back 10' and take 6 damage. (posting to check this damage amount and then will edit once I found out what state they are in.)
They look a little worse for wear as they try to catch their feet and shake the ringing from their ears.
Several of the ball bearings that have been scattered on the floor also go shotgunning towards the forward portion of the ship...the crew members that had gathered there suddenly realize that this may be more dangerous than a standard fist fight and beginning hurriedly making their way up on deck.
Berry & Doc...from where each of you are you are able hear the loud clap of thunder, that seems to be coming from one of the lower decks...that's no rainstorm. Something is definitely up. (If you would like to head down to investigate please roll an initiative check and I will place you on the battle map once you arrive in the crew berths. Doc, with everyone rushing up you would make it to the bottom of the stairs after one movement in the round that is about to start...Berry, if you head down it will take you a full round and then the movement action of the following round to get to the bottom of the stairs...everyone is in your way.)
No one seems to have seen Kirun, or the other new recruits, and Berry begins to get a sinking feeling.when a loud clap startled him and the crew around. Something is wrong. He tries to find his way to the hold as fast as it is possible through the crowd, jumping over heads with flaps of his wings, and observes who is heading down, too - especially if any officers go this way.
Seeing Fipps and Syl get pushed back Darvas bends through his knees a moment moving his fingers underneath his pants at his ankle and pulls out a knife. While still crouching he then moves to the side of Az'el (in front of Kirun) jabbing his knife forward to Jape's right leg before Darvas stands fully again.
Get back!he says trying to prevent them from ganging up on Az'el
Action: Dagger vs Jape: tohit 24, for 6+5(sneak attack)= 11 dmg (nonlethal, just trying to cut/disable not kill) Movement: moving 5ft diagonally to get next to Az'el and in front of Kirun
Doc starts working his way with the crowd of sailors going up onto the deck wen he notice a few stragglers all of a sudden tush up from below. Must be bad to be late to whatever is going on. Doc is almost to the deck when he hears the thunderous boom from below. What in the depths below was that? He turned around, curious to what just happened. He didn't want to get involved with helping the ship, he was to be a cook on this trip and was that. Let that "Surgeon" deal with the mess. But he also didn't want to be stranded by a sunken ship either. But why are the rest of the crew running from the commotion too? If there was danger to the ship wouldn't they want to help save the ship they are on too? Something was going on that Doc couldn't figure out.
Just as Doc was about to find a spot on deck out of the way of those rushing around, he noticed that little one with the wings that helped him up the day before, making his way back down while everyoneelse seemed to be coming up. I think Berry is the name. Where is he going? Doc decided that Berry already got his duties for the day and they were related to whatever happened below deck. Poor lad is in for a rough one today.
