You managed to spot the Ghouls early enough so that they are only ahead of you, not behind.
Alcazar notices Janek readying his attack and nods. "Perhaps fall back a little?" he says as magical bolts of force fly unerringly at the ghoul to the south. When he is done with his magic, he retreats to the previous room to allow the warrior space to move.
Janek nods in response to Alcazar's suggestion. His hands had gone to his longswords, but he switches and readies his heavy crossbow instead. He fires at the ghoul.
(Crossbow Attack: 12, Damage: 8)
He then backs up, keeping between himself and the sorcerer.

As Alcazar unleashes his magic at the nearest Ghoul, both Janek and Alcazar retreat slightly down the corridor to force the Ghouls to come at them one at at time. The first Ghoul is still in the ground when it is stuck by the Magic Missile, and emerges from the earth looking slightly worse for wear. It charges at the two retreating adventurers, with the second Ghoul following behind. Janek hits the leading Ghoul with a crossbow bolt straight in the chest, which is enough to finish it off and it falls to the ground dead. The second Ghoul continues over the body of its fallen partner and angrily slashes at Janek with its claws.
The claw manages to catch Janek, leaving a deep mark across his abdomen. He drops his crossbow, drawing both his longswords to attack the ghoul. (Longsword Attack: 18, Damage: 5) (Longsword Attack: 17, Damage: 4)
Nodding in approval as Janek strikes down the ghoul, Alcazar changes tack and launches bolts of flame at the remaining creature while warily glancing behind.

The creature manages to duck below Alcazars blast of flame, but is put off balance and catches both of Janek's swords strikes straight across its torso. It reels back in pain and is bleeding, but still in the fight. In its eyes, you see a desperate anger and otherwordly hunger. You know enough about Ghouls to realise that this wretched thing will certainly not retreat - and will fight until the end. It once again slashes out at Janek (the closer of the two, and the one who most recently hurt it) with its claws:
This time the claws fortunately do not reach Janek. He again presses an attack, swing both swords in long sweeps at the ghoul, trying to make sure it can't slip past him to catch his companion. (Longsword Attack: 12, Damage: 8) (Longsword Attack: 9, Damage: 10)
Alcazar peers around the fighter again, wondering if the creature that they are fighting is one of the victims of which the children's ghosts told them. Idly he wondered if he would end up like them. He shakes his head. Not today.
Fire once more leaps from his outstretched hand and flies toward the ghoul, before he again retreats to give the warrior room.
Attack: 15; Damage: 3; Bonus action: 2 Sorcery Points to first level spell slot.
Alcazar and Janek both hit the Ghoul (only one sword stroke hits, but it's enough) causing the Ghoul to collapse onto the floor with the loss of blood and burning. (Combat over).
Which way do you want to head now from the intersection?
"I guess we look to the side first before pressing on further south," Janek says. He turns down the cordior that was on their left as they approached. (To the right side of the map.)
You follow the corridor into a large room, which looks a little like a shrine or temple. The walls are festooned with moldy skeletons that hang from rusty shackles. A wide alcove in the wall contains a painted wooden statue carved in the likeness of a gaunt, pale-faced man and a wolf (on the map the location of of the statue is depicted by the stars).
The figure is depicted wearing a voluminous black cloak, with pale skin. The statue's left hand rests on the head of a wolf (also part of the carved statue, next to him). In his right hand, he holds a smoky-gray crystal orb. On the cloak of the figure is a Crest shown in red, presumably indicating the figure's identity or family.
"An interesting statue," Janek remarks. "I don't suppose you know the crest?" He will briefly take a closer look at the statue, particularly the crystal orb. (Investigation: 23)

You do not recognize the crest, but have an ominous feeling that this is not the last time you will see it. Given your investigations around the house, you realize that this is probably the "Messiah" whom the house's inhabitants thought to have been sent by "Dark Powers" and worshiped, as per the letter you found earlier. If so, that would make this figure the author of the letter you found: One "Strahd von Zarovich" ... whoever he may be.
The crystal orb held in the statues hand seems to be purely decorative and part of the statue, and not magical. It is not clear what it symbolises as you lack context in terms of who erected the statue and who the subject is. The crystal ball looks expensive and could potentially fetch a good price if you can remove it and if you can find the right merchant or collector (you estimate ~ 25gp).
Alcazar examines the crest, looking for familiar references and styles, trying to get some insight into the likely origins of the count and this land. If he recognizes anything he tells Janek, but then goes back to examine the ghoul corpses, wondering who they might have. Once done, he stands ready to move on.

The Crest does not tell you much. The fact that the bearer has a crest in the first place makes him a member of a noble family. The shield contains an image of a castle at the top, which you guess to be his seat of power. The large flying creature could have any numbers of meanings from some obscure historical reference, to a pun or play on words (surprisingly common in heraldry), or maybe a property of the man. It's impossible to know without more context.
You examine the ghouls. Now that they have stopped moving this is quite easy and you are able to look at them in detail. They still are wearing scraps of clothes of what you would guess might once have been the type of clothing Acolytes would typically wear. Perhaps these two are the leftover of whatever cult once worshipped Strahd and the dark powers.
As you examine the room and area, you notice that here is something slightly odd about the north wall, and the ground in front of it. (Roll perception please)
Janek will take a moment to try to pry the crystal free from the statue, thinking perhaps they could sell at some point. He takes the crowbar out of his pack to help if needed. (Strength Check, if needed: 16, if Advantage: 14)
