"You are right. If it is indeed several days to darklake and we have to keep a pace that we can sustain."
(Tanis translates to Undercommon, Elvish, Dwarvish and Gnomish as needed).
He then sets about looking for a good "camping" spot just off the main tunnel and cleaning up evidence of the party's tracks in nearby passageways, asking anyone else who is a trained scout (Eldeth?) for help in doing so, and asking Drogen for divine Guidance.
He also looks for sources of water of food. Mushrooms? Other than Stool of course...
TanisSurvival plus Guidance: 16 + 4 = 20 (dirty) if no help, but 21 + 4 = 25 at advantage if he gets help.
The dwarf casts guidance on the ranger and will help look. Once they’ve found their campsite for the night, Drogen will perform an hour long ritual using his channel divinity: artisans’s blessing to transform the dagger he has into a holy symbol emblazoned on his shield.
Arokas sits down once the group makes camp. He twiddles a bit of his hair, the dark blue almost black in the low light. Arokas starts a tiny fire with Fire Bolt, the blue flames coming from the scales on his left hand. Once it’s lit, he stares into the fire with haunting eyes.
Looking for a place to forage you find a side cavern full of multiple fungi. The greater mass of them are forming an amorphous blob near the cavern end. Lichens cover the walls, and a shallow puddle, no more than a couple inches deep, hosts a couple dozen bulbous fungus that both Sarith and Jimjar identify as Waterorbs. The largest ones can be squeezed out like sponges to extract drinkable water and the flesh itself is edible, altough chewy and tasteless.
Arokas' fire reveals that the fungi in the cavern are brightly colored. The blob at the end has purple and green stripes, the lichens are bluish and green, and the waterobs are light pink. The stones look mostly gray and dark even in the firelight.
Night, if you can call it that given that the cavern can't get any darker, comes shortly after you finish eating. Most prisoners don't want to talk much, tired as they are from moving quickly away from the drow. Sleep comes easily to your tired bodies, but nightmares again plague your rest.
A loud wail wakes you up. Topsy kneels next to the body of her brother. What remains of Turvy is a gruesome sight. The deep gnome has a slith throat, and his corpse has been disemboweled leaving his innards sprawled around him in a circle. Topsy is unconsolable, demading justice for her brother in a mixture of gnomish and undercommon, and accusing everyone and everything at the same time.
Arokas wakes with a start, breathing hard. He looks over and widens his eyes as he takes in what happened. Arokas asks quietly in Undercommon, “May I take a look? I might be able to find something that points to whoever did it.” If he receives permission, Arokas investigates the body for any clues that could tell him who may have don’t it.
Tanishelps Arokas to the extent he can. It could have been anyone. Though Drogen does not seem the type, and Stool could not have...
As he thinks, and listens to the bereaved deep gnome's accusations, he also remembers Buppido creepily licking his lips in anticipation when Ront started the fight with Thunk, as well as Buppido's disappointment when neither of the orcs died as a result. Not to mention the derro's strange behavior with the corpse of the slain drow guard in the cell. He dipped his fingers in the blood and drew a sigil on his own tattered garments...
Tanis glances sharply at Buppido. Looking for any traces of fresh blood on the derro's clothing.
(Anyone watching Tanis would notice something strange and new. When standing near any light source, Tanis looks normal. But when in darkness, the ranger appears to fade away, becoming invisible to darkvision in addition to normal vision. Gloom Stalker's Umbral Sight.)
Upon waking, Drogen uses his blessing of the forge to imbue some magic into his chain shirt making it more durable. (common) "Why would any of us have done this to your brother after having escaped together? More likely we are being stalked by something. We should have taken turns keeping watch."
Thunk looks everyone over and considers them carefully. (Insight 15) Eventually Thunk declares "Maybe dinner disagreed with him," and gives a little shrug,

"We should certainly take turns keeping watch, maybe two at a time," Tanis allows. "Not doing so was a mistake. But as for something outside our group stalking us, while not impossible, it is rare for non-humanoids to kill by slitting their victim's throat."
Tanis continues to glance at Buppido for signs of fresh blood on the derro's clothing. "The evisceration could have been anyone or anything, but the throat-slitting... it was done by a blade. So either some drow or other humanoid is stalking us, or it was probably one of us."

Turvy nods curtly at Arokas' suggestion and somberly watches over him as he investigates her brother's corpse. The half-elf's search provides some information, the wounds were clearly inflicted with a very sharp weapon, and the assasin knew enough about anatomy to extract the main organs without damaging them. The rocky floor does not provide any clues about footprints.

Buppido still bears the mark he made with drow blood back in the prison cell, but you can't see any fresh markings in the tattered clothes he's wearing.

Turvy turns to Tanis as he speaks (undercommon) "whoever did this to my brother deserves a slow and painful death." She is letting her anger flow, trying to cope with her loss in any possible way.
The other people around you react in different ways. Stool cowers at the sight of the dead deep gnome and keeps as close to Tanis as possible, releasing a cloud of rapport spores to ask "can we go now? Stool is scared of the screaming."
Jimjar and Sarith look honestly surprised. Eldeth more scared than most (Dwarvish) "I thought our enemies were the drow, but this must be someone else. They want slaves, not to scare us."
Derendil comes forward and kneels in front of Turvy, to keep his head at her level (undercommon) "I offer my condolonces, could you tell us how should we bury your brother? Your customs are most likely different than my people's." Turvy calms herself enough to answer (undercommon) "we must burn the body, so no scavenger eats him."
Buppido keeps to the rear of the group, enduring Tanis' glances stoically and keeping an almost imperceptible grin in his face (undercommon) "we should keep moving, the blood will attrack predators to this place."
** Sorry I didn’t mention it, but Arokas will burn Topsey’s body using Fire Bolt ** Arokas gets back in the order where he was, almost at the back but in front of Drogen. He can still see the rest of the group and make sure that the two of them aren’t lead astray by the person in front of him. If Buppido tries to get behind Drogen or him, Arokas stops him. “You are going to stay in front of me,” he whispers in Undercommon if this happens. “I don’t trust you to have my back. Drogen at least is a holy person, and even if I don’t share his faith he would actually like to get out of here.” If Buppido doesn’t attempt this, Arokas makes sure no one strays away from the group.
“Someone make fire,” Thunk says placidly. Think is unsure how this happened or why. Think is sure the dead need to be dealt with how they need to be dealt with. It’s only right. As such, Thunk stands and waits, resistant to moving in until the body is burned like the little one said.
Tanis solemnly helps with the burning of Topsy's body, though he himself has no way to kindle flames. He looks to the draconic sorcerer Arokas, having seen him start a small fire with a Fire Bolt previously.
Once the group starts moving, Tanis takes the lead as scout once more, ranging stealthily ahead, then circling back to keep the group informed. His darkvision seems to have increased in range, and more strangely, he becomes entirely invisible to darkvision himself when in darkness. So he is only visible in the presence of a light source, or to those with some other sense besides regular eyesight or darkvision.
Turvy stands next to her brother's pyre until the last flames are gone. Her mood swings from solemn to angry to sad to devastated. Jimjar stands next to her and intones (gnomish) "may Segojan watch over his spirit and grant him rest."
Distrusts grows among the ex prisoners as you all leave the cave, following Sarith's lead. Buppido grunts at Arokas' words, but says nothing and simply walks in front of him in the group formation. Derendil gives a knowing nod to Arokas and falls in line next to the half-elf (elvish) "you do well not trusting that one, he seldom speaks and no other prisoner was fond of him."
Eldeth is surprised not seeing Tanis out in the dark anymore and is only reassured when the ranger replies to her voice. The journey keeps on uneventfully. You hear water dripping from stalacites from time to time, and find small batches of edible fungi in secluded spaces.
As you keep going, Tanis notices a humanoid skeleton lying in one of the side passages. Sarith keeps walking forward along the primary tunnel.
Arokas nods back to Derendil. In elvish he responds, “I find it hard to trust anyone. I don’t think I’ve ever trusted anyone in my life. Mostly because…” Arokas shudders and shakes his head. “Never mind. I definitely don’t trust Buppido. Something feels off about him.”
"Careful," Tanis hisses at the others, his voice coming from somewhere in the darkness. "Someone was killed in a side passage here. Their bones... there may be a lurking predator or hazard nearby." He touches Sarith on the arm to caution the dark elf to slow down and be careful.
"Should we carefully investigate the corpse? It might be dangerous, but it might also be better than leaving whatever killed the fellow behind us."
Thunk will go look at the corpse. To say he is investigating it is a stretch of his mental capacity but he does have a morbid curiosity and knows enough that perhaps there's some stuff on the body they could use...
