“The guards are running to the north, so the south may be ungraded now,” Arokas says. “The pool of water down that way may have that creature in it, but together and with magic returned to us we might have a chance to kill it, if not get away from it.”
Thunk doesn't know South. Thunk does know away from guards. Thunk does know down. Thunk does know water. Thunk heads that way. If there be a creature Thunk will show he is strongest.
Tanis takes a moment to take the drow guard's studded leather armor. If he feels no alarm has been raised and he has time, he takes a minute to don it, but otherwise just carries it over his back, with his hand crossbow in one hand as he looks to the stalactite across the bridge to the west.
"Have to go west across the bridge to the guard stalactite before we can get south to the gap in the webs to dive down into the pool near the waterfall. Watch for any equipment we can pick up within the stalactite. We need not just weapons and armor, but rations, waterskins, rope and other useful gear."
Ront gives a side glance at Thunk as Thunk takes the shortsword, but says nothing, seeming to accept the fact that Thunk is actually stronger.
Going out of the cell, you vaguely see three drow in the northern watchpost with their backs turned to you. Keeping their attention on the north tunnel. You don't see anyone on the silk bridges.
As you pile up near the cell gate, Stool's spores start to affect everyone. A few moments of confusion follow, but soon you are all able to communicate. Jimjar takes point while Tanis puts on the dead guard armor. Disguised as a drow he takes a look at the room inside the stalactite and comes back to report "I saw two guards looking at some papers. We could slip by easily if we can keep quiet." Eldeth shakes her head and replies "we need supplies if we want to survive. I know there is an armory in another chamber above that one."
The prisoners don't seem too eager to follow the dwarf nor the deep gnome. It would not be hard to convince them to take either option.
If you take a closer look at the drow guards inside the stalactite you'll notice that their armor looks plain compared to the one Tanis is now wearing.
OOC: if you want to try to sneak past the drow, roll a stealth check. If you want to fight them roll for initiative. If you want to do something else go for it.
Tanis wants to gear up if possible, so he agrees Eldeth rather than the deep gnome.
"You seem to enjoy a good wager, Jimjar. A gold piece says that we get further if we all take any equipment and provisions we can carry from the stalactite rather than sneaking by the guards and missing out. I have no gold now, but I'm good for it."
Still, he suggests trying to sneak up on the drow guards who are looking at papers to surprise them, though Thunk's ruckus may preempt those plans.
TanisStealth: 25 (Natural 20) Tanis Initiative if needed: 13
Arokas nods. “I haven’t spent much time in the Underdark, and there’s no way I’d be able to get far without supplies. Perhaps we can sneak to the other chamber without the guards noticing.”
The guards are surprised by the prisoners attacking them and take some time to react. You hear Jimjar "there goes our chance of just slipping by." Ront looks ready to hit more guards, Derendil is limping near the back of the group.
Arokas looks with determination at the guards. As he moved his hands, he whispers in Elvish to the guards, “The other two, slight air and purging fire,/Are both with thee, wherever I abide” as he casts Fire Bolt at the one Thunk hit. Attack: 21 to hit, Damage: 2
Tanis trots up to the injured guard and levels his drow-crafted hand crossbow at them with the relaxed aim of an expert, though nerves betray his first shot. His second shot flies true at point blank range however, as he marks the guard as his Favored Foe. "Kill them quickly," he whispers.
(No disadvantage from close range due to Crossbow Expert feat).
Action: Hand Crossbow to hit: 11 (assume that misses) Hand Crossbow damage on hit: 7 piercing
Bonus Action: Crossbow Expert bonus attack, Hand Crossbow to hit: 19 Hand Crossbow damage on hit: 8 + 4 from Favored Foe = 12 piercing
Hit with fire and wooden bolts, the drow guard drops dead. Derendil, still limping, keeps rear guard, eyes on the northern ledge where Jorlan went. Eldeth moves into the room, keeping away from the last drow. She goes to the wall and unties a rope securing the trap door leading to the upper floor.
Jimjar stands next to Derendil "if they come, pretend to be following my orders. Maybe we can fool them."
Ront rushes in and quickly grabs the shortsword hanging from the dead guard's belt. He swings at the remaining guard (to hit: 21, damage: 8), making the drow swear in pain.
The guard is thunked hard and slumps to the floor. Ront quickly grabs another short sword and smiles "heads will roll now!"
Eldeth quickly climbs the rope ladder to the second floor and calls down "there is a whole armory in here, come on up!" Outside the guard stalacite, Jimjar and Derendil are still keeping an eye on the northern way.
Those that decide to climb up will find Eldeth quickly putting on a studded leather armor and strapping a shortsword and dagger to her belt. In neat shelves and hanging hooks you can see the following drow equipment:
6 chain shirts
6 suits of studded leather armor
6 shields
6 hand crossbows
20 cases of hand crossbow bolts, each case containing 20 bolts
Thunk ignores the armor entirely but debates for a while between another short sword and a shield. Eventually he notices Ront with two swords and so decides to go that route as well. Thunk also grabs several of the daggers (2-4 depending if others need or not.) It doesn't occur to Thunk to carry non-fighting things for the future but if anyone suggests he carry the rope or caltrops or anything Thunk will shrug and play pack mule without complaint.
Arokas grabs 2 daggers and a bag of caltrops. He looks at the armor for a second, but then shakes his head. Arokas also grabs a building hammer and a bag of spikes. “Hopefully I can find a use for these,” he says in Common as he takes the final two items.
Thunk picks up the short sword. Thunk swings it back and forth. “Need bigger,” Thunk says but Think keeps.
“Where to?” Thunk asks. Thunk follows whoever leads or goes in whatever direction he is pointed…
“The guards are running to the north, so the south may be ungraded now,” Arokas says. “The pool of water down that way may have that creature in it, but together and with magic returned to us we might have a chance to kill it, if not get away from it.”
