Essendrum nods to Spike. “The first Harper we dealt with gave us five coins for slaying a fire giant and confiscated the stone I should be showing Krowen right now. The second made us promises to rescue the fourth and made no effort to make good on them. The third healed us without hesitation. The fourth refused to make good on the promises of the second. I hope you have learned something about the Harpers from the experience which is more valuable than gold. One in four can be trusted. But the man before you is no mayor or barkeep and I suggest we forget about the past wrongs his organization has done. Now is the time to focus on the threat the giants pose to all of us.”
"I agree. And I'll add, I think all of us would have had the courage, and the sense, to face the threat these giants pose--even without being conscripted."
Enoch leveled his gaze at Krowen for an awkwardly long moment after that, then continued, "But, that settled, I have a question... you said we 'were welcome here." Where exactly is 'here', again? Are we in Cormyr? Or..."
The paladin let the question trail off, not entirely wanting to hear that they'd been transported to some demiplane or another realm altogether.
Krowen is visibly angered by Essendrum's patronizing statement. "Listen here young man." he turns toward Essendrum. "More than 1 Harper has lost their lives so you can go blowing off with that opinion of yours. There has been a tally kept on everything that has been promised to you, though I am starting to wonder if some things should be kept from you. Being a Harper means less about gaining power & riches and more about saving lives and defending those that are in need." Krowen produces a bag. It has the look of a large leather sachel with a wide shoulder strap. "This is aBag of Holdingand contains all the gold promised to you, and the bag goes to the Group." He eyes Essendrum when he says this. "and not the person". As for the spells you have been harping about, young man, I am Krowen Valharrow, Archmage of Everlund, and my library is only viewed by those I deem worthy and you, young man, are not impressing me right now." He stops, sighs, and gains his composure. "I think all of you need some time to decide if you are willing to take on the responsibility of what is being asked of you. I will give you time to decide." With that, he disappears. A loud "Meerrrrooowww" echoes through the room.
Essendrum steps forward and speaks loudly to the air. “Keep your bag of gold and your promises and posturing, old man. I had thought you wiser than you are when I told my charges you were different than your friends. I see I misjudged you. I have asked for no power or riches, only knowledge to help us in holding back the giants. If Flint is fond of gold, it is natural for a Dwarf, but he has bled more than the weight of what you hold. Enoch is a paladin and a mightier power than yours deems him worthy. Your Harper friends eat well and give orders while common men die around them. I see no great merit in that and I would have you spare us your shallow judgement.”
He sits and idly pets a winged cat. “When your temper is spent, tell us what you would have us do. Keep back what you wish. I only hope your choices kill fewer people than the poor choices made already. Three days ago Dral should have sent us here and a giant can travel far and cause great harm in three days.”
”Yeah, I am happy to take the gold and help people along the way, but having us wait 3 days to deliver our message did seem kind of unwise,” says Flint, walking over and picking up the bag curiously.

"Oh, I am sure the harpers are a wonderful organization, but I know I am not that selfless. A few gains and profits do much to bolster my motivation to help end this threat." says Kiza happy for the gold
Enoch watched in disbelief as Krowen left. He turned to Essendrum with a sigh and a shrug. "Guess he's pretty testy."
"Still, a Bag of Holding is always useful, and we can help others with the gold. But walking off like that... just rude. As if we hadn't already all said we'd help."
The paladin shook his head as he sat; a Tressym came up to him, rubbing against his leg, and without really looking he began to absent-mindedly pet it as he thought to himself.
(( OOC: How much gold is in the bag? I suspect we won't be spending it for a bit, but I'll go ahead and add it to my character sheet if we're about to split it. ))
Essendrum smiles. “Whether we are in Cormyr or a demiplane, this beneficent archmage who thinks about nothing but the good of others has left us in a prison with no sustenance and no escape. Unless he chooses to come back for us, we might well die here. Should he wish to return because he is merely ‘testing’ us, but meet an unfortunate accident or illness, we will die just the same. I hope you will all note that this is what commonly passes for ‘good’ behavior in the realms: the enslaving and bullying of others coupled with an overwhelming sense of one’s own worth. Should we die here, we will die wiser than many who will perish out there. But since we have nothing else to do…”
Essendrum sets to investigations the 70’ by 70’ area and its contents. He begins with a physical inspection and then moves on to ritually cast detect magic and conducts a magical inspection. He looks for anything of interest and any indication of what plane they are on and any possible escape routes.
Essendrum walks around looking under pillows and tapping walls. He pokes a tressym, which scratches him. “Not an illusion, I suppose.”
The wizard scans the floor for arcane sigils.
”I thought it likely Dral was deceiving us when he offered that drink. In fact I admit that after I swallowed it I realized he might be the Thayan in disguise. As this archmage could be. But I still think the Thayan would not be so elaborate. Power corrupts but it also shapes. This archmage tells himself he is the sole force for good in the world and others must bow before him. He is a tyrant, but I do not think the Thayan would pursue such a subtle ruse. A Thayan would threaten us with death and horror, not an eternity as the play things of a catmage shut-in.”
He examines the wall looking for signs of actual workmanship as opposed to wizard craft.
”Of course if Thay were planing to invade, what better course than to fool us into fearing giants and mad Harpers?”
He stops and tugs at his beard.
”No, I think captivity is causing my mind to wander.”
Kiana steps forward and yells to the air. "HEY, OLD DUDE!" She notes to Essendrum, "Sorry, not you, the other old dude," then goes back to her conversation with nothing. "I GET THAT YOU'RE HAVING A GRANDPA FIGHT, AND THAT'S FINE, BUT WE'RE ALL KINDA ANTSY TO GET GOING. AND YOU CAN'T REALLY BLAME THE FOLKS FOR WANTING CASH. I MEAN, YOU CAN TALK ABOUT SAVING LIVES AND NOBLE PURSUITS AND ALL THAT HARPER STUFF, BUT THESE PEOPLE DIDN'T ASK TO BE HARPERS. THEY'RE THE MOST ABLE HANDS FOR THE JOB RIGHT NOW, SO WHO, WITH RESPECT, GIVES A DAMN WHAT MOTIVATES THEM."

"If you will take up this mission, step through the portal." DM: Who steps through?
"Don't gotta tell me twice. I've always wanted to travel more, anyways." Rapidly and without hesitation, Kiana holds up a holy symbol and says a slurred prayer. From out of her symbol burst angelic spirits, which swirl around her in a whirlwind of holy light. She casually gestures for the others to follow, then sprints through the portal.
