The animated trunk is engaged with Keibel currently!
Aard'len creeps forwards, seeing the other from his treasure hunt team taking action, he feels touch of guilt at his reticence to fight. He watches as the others use their weapons to try and subdue the gnashing trunk. His own hands are devoid of any such implement, and it would seem.foolish at best were he to try and punch the thing, especially so close to the centaurs hooves. He looks at the creature, and rather than send out his thoughts as words, he sends forth a feeling, from his memories he recalls the pang of guilt from only moments ago, the hint of anguish as he resigned to involving himself. He grasped those emotions and tried to fling those feelings into the mind of the trunk. His lips move and give voice to his desire, "Pain."
Action: Cast Mind Sliver - DC13 Int save. 6 psychic damage
"It's a mimic," Darby shouts to Katar. "My cousins loved to turn them loose in the forge," they add moving towards Keibel with up their hand raised as Sprocket haries the mimic giving advantage!
Darby then mutters some dwarvish words and immediately a blue flame erupts from their palm towards the mimic as the cast fire bolt
Attack: 20 Damage: Unable to parse dice roll.
OOC I'm assuming we have no gear or do we? Weapons, armor etc...
Darby stops about 20ft away from Keibel and the mimic

Sometimes a Nat 1 tells a better story than a Nat 20 ever could.
Aard'len sends a pang of pain into the mimic and it shrieks horribly from the psychic assault! (hit and damage!)
Darby let's loose their blast of fire singeing the miserably creature well! (hit and damage!)
Keibel clobbers the animated monster with their mace, hitting it squarely on top! (hit and damage!)
The annoying animated aggressor then suddenly stops moving, the teeth disappear, along with the tongue, returning to it's all too normal, mundane trunk state.
(Combat over!)
As you all start to relax from the brief moment of tension, an owlin female rushes over, wearing Silverquill garb and looking a bit flustered as she eyes each of you quickly, ensuring none of you are injured, before giving a long exhalation and bustling a bit with renewed excitement. You can see easily on a pinned on name tag: "Professor Mavinda Sharpbeak; Orientation Overseer".
“Students, well done!” Professor Sharpbeak exclaims, ruffling her feathers with pride. “Such bravery in this incoming class! And what a bizarre occurrence. I can’t remember any of those old costume trunks ever bearing a hint of magic—let alone that manner of transmutation. I will be having a word with the equipment managers over at the Rose Stage. They’re supposed to keep this sort of thing from happening!”
Aard'len steps forwards, bowing slightly to the avian professor. "Thank you ma'am..." He coughs into his hand then is about to switch to sending his thoughts forwards before remembering Darby's earlier comment. With a slight grimace, he continues talking out loud, his voice dry and gravelly. "We didn't really do much. I'm sure most students could have done the same. Once they got over their initial panic." He says, thinking about his own instinct to retreat. "At least it has given everyone something else to talk about and remember today by."
Katar dismissed the armor and the vines and roots to wither away and fall off before vanishing. "Thank you, but I barely did anything, my teammates are the ones who really dealt with it."
“I heard that if you’re attacked my monsters you automatically, like, get passing grades that semester or something,” Fianna offers. “Because of like PTSD or something, right?” She then saunters over towards where her dagger went askew and retrieved it…
Professor Sharpbeak cackled with bright eyes. "Oh dear student, I can't tell you how many times I've heard that! Sadly, no, that is not a policy here, just one of the many rumors upper classmen love to spread on a regular basis. That being said, whether you think had a hand in helping or not, you were here for each other and that is the important thing! And besides, this sort of thing happens now and then. But never you all worry! We're always around to help! Now you can go if you wish, I suspect you all would like to finally get settled in and ready for your classes! Oh! Here, as a token of my personal thanks for your efforts here!" Professor Sharpbeak reaches into her bag and pulls out a small pile of coins and hands one to each of you. (Everyone receives 1 platinum piece!)
(Fianna, make a perception or investigation check as you go to retrieve your dagger)
Snatching up her dagger, Fianna would gather a sample of the substance. She gets some on her dagger and smears it on the inside of her new lantern before carefully putting that away, then gets more on her dagger and, calmly, returns to the group. "Professor Sharpbeak?" she asks. "There's this gooey goo stuff on the trunk. Is it part of the creature or something? It kind of seems covered in it..." Fianna holds her dagger up sideways in order to show off the substance in question.
The owlin professor takes a close look at the substance then flaps once slowly. "I'm afraid I don't know, probably just some special new leather conditioner. I wouldn't worry about it. Now then, off you go! I'm sure you all have settling in to do, and I have a Biblioplex to help put back together and more students to orient! Nice to meet you all!"With that Professor Sharpbeak strides off to check on the other students and faculty.
With your orientation challenge complete, it is time to visit your dormitory! All of you have been assigned to Semmet Hall, first floor (that is, the first floor above ground, not the ground floor). Everyone has their own small individual room which all open into a small, but furnished common space, which has its own door to the stairs. There is a sprightly looking gnome woman on the ground level, holding a clipboard and quill, marking off students as they arrive, handing out orientation packets and directing traffic as best she can from her perch on a large wooden table.
After the curious calamity is cut short Darby thanks professor Sharpbeak stowing the platinum piece. They make sure their companions are unharmed before following the group out to the dorms. Approaching Semmey Hall the dwarf admires the campus and building. Once they arrive the dwarf approaches the gnome with the clipboard.
"Hello! Darby Deepdelver, " they say with a bright smile. "Do we have to check in here? I assume my personal effects were sent ahead," they ask curiously.

“But…. But… it was only smeared on the one that came to life and…” Fianna tries to continue but it is apparent the professor is ignoring her. “Well fine, but if people die don’t say you weren’t warned!”
Fianna is still huffy when they get their rooms. “I have to share a bathroom with HOW many people??” She throws her things around and is generally disagreeable for a while… But eventually, as if a switch was flipped, she’s over it and all but forgotten the potential ongoing threat to the life of any student not wary enough of chests with goo on them.
The cheery gnome lady looks at Darby from over her clipboard, her long green hair tied up so it stood in a cone shape on her head in an intricate weave, with twinkling green eyes to match. "Lohrae Lightspark! Resident Assistant here in Semmet Hall! Nice to meet you Darby Deepdelver! Yup, this is the place to check in!" She flips through a few pages on her clipboard. "Oh yes, if you left your things here as instructed then they should be in your room already. Let's see, you're going to need this too..."She leans over and picked up a small leather folder with a bunch of pages stuffed inside, one of the many that lay on the table she was standing on, and handed it over. "This has all the information you need to get started! Curfew times, meal times, class schedules, club information, jobs available, contacts, et cetera et cetera! If you still have questions about anything here on campus just find me later! I'll see you soon!" She waves Darby on with a bright smile before shouting in her cute little voice, "NEXT!"
Additionally inside the folder a room key magically appears, inscribed with Darby's name on it and the room number, as well as a map of the campus among other things mentioned. There is also a special rune written on the front inside cover that when touched, will allow the reader to have any of the text read out loud (telepathically) to them for the next 10 minutes by simply running their finger over the text. Other various magical accommodations could be found in the hall, including magical stairs like you might have seen in the Biblioplex, a clock in each shared room that normally showed Strixhaven time, but could be asked to show the time anywhere for a moment, and the room at the back of the common area was bigger to allow Keibel to move around in comfortably.
Meanwhile the joyous (and plenty of groans) sounds of new and old students rang out through the hall and across the campus as everyone finished arriving and began to get settled, ready for a new year of studying, learning, and undoubtedly plenty of shenanigans.
OOC: this is the time to get to know each other better as you all settle in and start classes! There is no rush in moving the story along so please feel free to RP away!
"Welcome! I know you're new! You could say, I knew you're new! Anyway! Sure, there a few spots highlighted in the packet here," she hands over the leather bound folder, "Just depends on what you're interested in! You walked through the Archway Commons to get here, pretty happening spot for everyone! But I suspect you'll enjoy the Firejolt Cafe and Bow's End Tavern at some point too! Each college has some unique places too! I'm sure you'll find something fascinating! Were you looking for something in particular?"
"No, I guess I'm just curious about the campus. It's nice meeting you though." He takes the folder and flips through, interested by whatever he finds. He looks for other students with a folder identical to his, hoping to find another new student he could meet.
"Great! I'll see you around soon I'm sure!" Lohrae grinned at Katar before her shrill happy voice called out for the next person again. As Katar flips through his folder and then looks around, he nearly runs into a tall, darkly garbed lady, sporting black and green colors, with just a touch of blood red here and there. Various piercings adorn her elven looking ears and face, adding to the already gothic look she carries in her steady stride. She smiles though as you two untangle from the mild collision, "You must be new here? I'm Aurora, first year Witherbloom. Finding everything alright?"Katar can also see that she has a hurdy-gurdy strapped to her back.

While retrieving your dagger, you notice that the trunk seems to have been rubbed down with some sort of black, oily substance.
Snatching up her dagger, Fianna would gather a sample of the substance. She gets some on her dagger and smears it on the inside of her new lantern before carefully putting that away, then gets more on her dagger and, calmly, returns to the group.
