Elila moves up the hall behind Kitryn, followed by Rindelk, Katerielle and Leek takes up the rear, in case the ruffians find some courage and try to follow.
With a flourish by Rindelk resembling an austringer launching a trained hawk, Klednir materializes in the air and flies into the cavern. He lands on the rope bridge and scans the room.
OOC: See Roll20. If you want your familiar to do anything more specific than that, let me know.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
As Kitryn walks down the hallway opening into the cavern, she senses a brief intrusion into her mind that is over before she even realizes what is happening. As she stands there trying to figure out what happened, a whispery voice that mumbles gibberish as often as audible words makes itself heard to Kitryn and Rindelk (via Klednir), "I see! I see... <gibberish>. Hunger. You understand it, you feed it too <cackling>. Do it again! Again - slay a comrade of yours and let us feast <gibberish>!"
DM roll: 18
OOC: I've included you all in the above, although only Kitryn and Rindelk currently hear the voice. Don't metagame and have your character act as if it knows something is happening because you know it's happening. I'm including you all to make the story inclusive to everyone hoping you'll all be drawn in further and want to participate more, instead of whispering or messaging just Kitryn and Rindelk while the rest of you think nothing is happening...
The voice continues, again only Kitryn and Rindelk (via Klednir) can hear the whispering in their heads, "<Cackling> Not impossible! Easy, like eating. I find secrets. I find things. <gibberish>. I hunger for fresh meat. Do it again and let us eat together."
Now that Elila has entered the cavern on her way to the north room, she hears the voice in her head as well as Kitryn and Rindelk (via Klednir), "Noo! I protect for food <cackling>. You kill your companion again, <gibberish> and eat again, and I will join your feast. And since you give me food, I protect you too!"
Kitryn gets about halfway through the cavern before she notices movement from behind the pillar across the crevasse. Hugging the pillar is a large lanky aberration, its head dominated by a large single eye and a mouth full of teeth. It's bare skin looks desiccated in spots. Its back is covered in spines and its hands and feet sport large claws.
OOC: I moved Rindelk, Katerielle and Leek up in the hallway, but not far enough to expose themselves. That being said...
Blind and deaf, Rindelk is guided forward by Katerielle. As he approaches, he sense necromantic magic in the bottom of the crevasse, from south to as far as his Detect Magic spell reaches northward.
What background can be called on to identify this thing without meta? I mean other than the general terrifying look and mind games that give a don't **** with me vibe?!
Your characters will not always know about or be able to identify the creatures they face. You can roll either an Arcana or a Nature check, but nothing short of a natural 20 will grant more information than what you can see.
If you survive, your character can always seek out the information at a later time, or if an opportunity presents itself, you can ask someone who may know. Or you can just ask it.
@ Rindelk: You can currently hear this creature speak because you are hearing it through Klednir. You are actually blind and deaf to your current body. Klednir can't speak, so if you would have to speak with your own voice from the hallway where you find yourself.
As to being able to speak to it telepathically, you'd have to try to find out.

As we go down the hall I will use my cantrip to snuff the lamps. That way if we see light coming behind us we will know that we are being followed.
Leek, taking up the rear, extinguishes all of the oil lamps as he passes them, leaving the areas the group passes through in darkness.
I send my familiar to do some recon!

Kitryn shoots a wide eye'd glance over each shoulder into the direction of the group, after a moments reflection
'haste!, let us end this errand, i have no wish to be in this place any longer'
i will run to m4
if too dark i will lead Elila to M3 otherwise i will implore her " come, your shield will be needed, we may yet flank those in closed hall"
OOC: I need Elila to confirm she's following that far, or not. BTW, it is lit by oil lamps everywhere, except where Leek is putting them out.
And you really mean all the way up north to the room past the cavern? (M4)
Yeah all good, I will follow Kitryn.
Yes all the way up to the other hall

Has this thing seen us?
Has not seen rindelk katerielle or leek

I would like to talk to the creature and ask it what intentions it has towards us.

I cut the telepathic link to my familiar and try to communicate with the creature telepathically, asking it its intentions.
Rindelk tries to communicate telepathically, but he doesn't feel anything or get any response.
Rolling Rindelk INT check: 24
You guess it's a one way link...
