"very well" vidruth says, hopefully it being busy will at least keep it out of the fight, as the redbrand slips down at his feet he snaps his hand out, launching a bolt of flame at the new arrival, but misses as the redbrand bumps into his leg

quote from Romantically Apocalyptic byVitaly S Alexius
Marten’s arrow flies true at Iarno, but at the moment it should have struck him, there is a high fluting sound like a crystal glass’ edge being rubbed with a wet thumb, and the arrow shatters into a hundred tiny shards which blow to either side of the mage.
“Oh, your arrows cannot harm me, archer,” Glasstaff shouts calmly across the crevasse.
Berry’s whip cracks at Redbrand 15, but the ruffian’s studded leather armor, though scored by the strike which draws a line straight down his chest, protects him from damage.
Nosam lunges forward, roundhousing with his war hammer, and its head plummets deeply into the Bugbear’s chest, splintering its sternum and smashing its heart to pulp. The tall creature grips Nosam’s arm and shield as it falls, and the dwarf sees the light go out of its eyes before it slips off the ledge into the crevasse, dead before it hits the bottom.
Vidruth launches a Firebolt at Redbrand 10, but he says the wrong key phrase and several pigeon feathers shoot from his wand instead.
Redbrand 10 tries to K.O. the wizard, “punching” him (non-lethal short sword attacks 8+4=12 / 5HP & 10+4=14 / 5HP non-lethal damage) and yelling, “You’re coming with me! Don’t try any of that!”
One-eye, oblivious to the battle, answers Vidruth. “The proportions in this potion are wrong. Can you help me get that vial?” It points to a small vial on a stand on the table beside him.
Redbrand 9, having collected his weapon again, strikes at Berry twice (7+4=11, 10+4=14) but the fairy’s movements in the dim light are too quick. The short sword slices only air. “COME ON!!,” he yells to the others and makes way for them.
Redbrand 7 obliges, dashing to engage the fairy.
Redbrand 8, with his crossbow, moves into the darkness and there sees Marten. He releases a bolt at the rogue. (2+4=6), but it misses, striking the column beside him and throwing small pebbles.
Redbrand 12 fires at Sildar, and the bolt hits for 6HP. Gritting his teeth, the fighter keeps going.
Redbrand 11 advances on Nosam and strikes twice with his short sword. (7+4=11, 15+4=19) The second blow hits, doing 4HP piercing damage to the dwarf.
Sildar backs up, then with a running start, leaps across the crevasse to engage the crossbowman who just shot him, trying to shove him into the crevasse, but the man ducks and weaves and keeps his footing.
Crissie needs only turn right to see Redbrand 9 in the dim light across the crevasse. She raises her crossbow and fires, (11,11) but the bolt zips past down the southeast tunnel and cracks against the far wall. “Stand still!,” she growls, reloading and moving away to hide in the southwest stairs. “Whoa!,” she yells, barely avoiding slipping on the wet ice.
Glasstaff now intones an arcane phrase, “Steetchay!!,” gesturing with his staff at Sildar. Suddenly the bodyguard finds himself encased in a sheathe of crystalline force. He slams his shield against it but can’t break it. He shouts back at Glasstaff but his voice can’t be heard (i.e., hold person). The mage then, his eye on the column behind which Marten hides, shifts back behind the wall of the north chamber, out of line of sight.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
vidruth staggers, both strikes hitting him, the first absorbed by daphyras blessing, but the second cutting into him painfully "its going to take more than that" he snarls at the redbrand, then speaking to one eye "i would help, but im currently trying to stop these brigands from killing me and my friends, i will assist as soon as this is dealt with" as he speaks he attempts to blast the redbrand again, hampered by their close proximity

Berry observes Sildar’s tactic with worry, he wouldn’t stand much chance against a few determined fighters. Then the spell hit him and Berry feels how despair encroaches him - again. Encircled by two thugs, he tries to push one of them (R9) into the chasm, just as Sildar did.
Marten makes an annoyed "tsk" sound and mutters, "Wizard magic." Marten wonders how complete the wizard's protection is. Perhaps a heavier draw? Or just a better timed shot when the wizard is distracted? Hearing the wizard's words, Marten assumes that he's bluffing / boasting. Otherwise, why seek cover if he's immune to arrows? A crossbow bolt cracking against the column near him snaps Marten's attention away from the wizard, and he realizes that he's not nearly as well hidden as he thought.
Marten nocks another arrow and steps out from behind the column. He quickly scans the chamber, picks a target, and releases an arrow. He yells to Nosam and Berry, "I've lost sight o' th' third bugbear 'n' th' wizards -- both ours and theirs!", before moving back to find some cover and hopefully a place to hide.
Vidruth is nowhere to be seen, and Nosam has already taken down another bugbear. Glasstaff has taken cover behind the northern wall, and Marten cannot see him at all. (He's a good shot, but he can't hit someone behind total cover!) Therefore, he turns his attention to reducing the number of Redbrands near Sildar and Berry. Berry shoves one of the thugs into the crevasse, so Marten targets the other one closest to Berry. Better to face an attack from R8's crossbow than two attacks from R7's short swords!
Movement: 20', ending at F12 pressed up against the pillar G13 > H13 > G13 > F13 > F12 Action: Attack R7, Shortbow (80/320): 21 (in game log) Damage: 9 piercing (in game log, 8 bow + 1 sneak attack) The result is the same w/ and w/o advantage because the first attack roll was higher (16, 9)+5 and sneak attack damage applies w/o advantage because Berry is within 5' of R7. Bonus Action: Cunning Action, Hide - Stealth17 Free Action: Drawing an arrow, Talking
Nosam is surprised to see the numbers thinning out. Losing a couple of his friends was bad, but he expected the situation to continue getting worse. "Afraid I don't see the bugbear either!" While responding to Marten, Nosam swings his hammer yet again. "There's just a neverending supply of 'em."
Attack R11 with hammer. Hit- 6 (1+5), Damage- 11 (8+3)
Marten targets the other one closest to Berry. Better to face an attack from R8's crossbow than two attacks from R7's short swords!
Ugh! Reading the thread this morning, I realize that I had intended Marten to attempt to kill R7 before he could attack Berry again by using a "sharpshooter" attack for +10 damage, but I completely forgot to put that in the original post. 😭
Action: Attack R7, Shortbow (80/320): 21 (in game log) Damage: 9 piercing (in game log, 8 bow + 1 sneak attack) The result is the same w/ and w/o advantage because the first attack roll was higher (16, 9)+5 and sneak attack damage applies w/o advantage because Berry is within 5' of R7.
If it's not too late, that would change the attack to:
Action: Attack R7, Shortbow (80/320): 16 (21 in game log, -5 for sharpshooter attack) Damage: 19 (in game log, 8 bow + 1 sneak attack + 10 sharpshooter bonus damage) The result is the same w/ and w/o advantage because the first attack roll was higher (16, 9)+5 and sneak attack damage applies w/o advantage because Berry is within 5' of R7.
"i would help, but im currently trying to stop these brigands from killing me and my friends, i will assist as soon as this is dealt with"
As Vidruth’s fire bolts splashes against the stairs behind him,
One-eye, responding to the half-orc, turns its attention momentarily from the vial, scowling. Vidruth sees the eye glow green and twisty. The Redbrand, leering at the wizard’s missed shot, and now leaping down to tackle Vidruth, his cloak crinkled black, his elbows and head bleeding from being flung against the cave wall, all due to earlier strikes from Vidruth, the Redbrand shrivels utterly and falls dead, slumping to the cold stone floor.
Innocently, One-eye’s eye turns back to the vial and it replies to Vidruth. “The blue one. You add a tiny drop to this one?” It seems ready to simultaneously add a tiny drop from a different, red, vial, to the first vial.
I imagine Cyreon, the tiny once-giant, tucking and rolling between the Redbrand’s legs, and from behind, grasping the ruffian’s cape and heaving, pulling the man off balance to fall, twisting and yelling, into the crevasse. Already twice wounded by Vidruth, the mercenary lands in a crunching heap, dead, as, with a buzz of fairy wings, Berry flits back to his place on the ledge.
Marten’s arrow whistles across the crevasse, hammering into the Redbrand’s torso from behind, a bullseye through the heart. He collapses without a sound, eyes in astonishment locked on the shaft suddenly protruding from his chest.
Nosam’s hammer (nat 1) rebounds from a quick and forceful parry by the muscular ruffian in front of him and is knocked from the dwarf’s grip to skittle along the stone floor to the edge of the crevasse. Lunging at the last second, Nosam recovers his weapon, teetering on the brink, a moment before it falls.
Redbrand 8’s eyes are wild, and he yells “YOU KILLED PUDGY!,” and releases a crossbow bolt at Cyreon, then backing up behind the pillar, still yelling a war cry. Crossbow vs. Berry: 14 to hit, 7HP
Redbrand 11 likewise is lost in the battle and strikes at Nosam again and again, his short sword flashing in the lamplight. The second blow is 22 to hit for 3HP damage, nicking the dwarf on the neck.
Redbrand 12 releases a crossbow bolt at Nosam — the bolt deflecting off the dwarf’s shield — then notices his hiding place behind the pillar has been taken by Redbrand 8 who gestures back over his shoulder. Redbrand 12 retreats to the treasure room and is now out of line-of-sight from the cavern chamber.
Sildar continues to hammer at the crystalline pillar holding him in place. It does not seem to be hurting him, but he is unable to escape its hold.
Crissie, setting her jaw and with a sudden movement, races to the opposite side of the column and raises her crossbow to aim at the north end of the chamber. She doesn’t fire at R11 through Nosam, but waits for a clear shot.
You do not see Glasstaff this turn (DM is rolling dice in the background).
vidruth seems indecisive, glancing back up the stairs, then agrees "very well, but we must hurry, my group is still in danger" he carefully pours a single drop from the blue vial into the first vial, waiting for one-eye's signal to do so, then steps back, returning the blue vial to its stand "i need to go help now" he says, and if given permission to do so, runs back up the stairs

Berry doesn't spare a moment to look at the man he just threw on one-eye's dinner table but re-attaches his whip to his belt and hurries to help Nosam with the other redbrand (R11, because he doesn't anyone else). In swift flight, he arrives next to Nosam (I9) and reaches out at the ruffian to grab his clothes (grapple DC 11). He fully intends to lift his victim up 5 feet and over the crevasse. Holding him there he wants to lock eyes with him before slowly letting go. However, when he rushed over to Nosam, he saw Daphyra's lifeless body laying on the western edge and his determination faltered rapidly, "How? Daphyra doesn't move! Nosam!"

Marten: Round 14
Marten is encouraged that Sildar and Sister Garaele have turned the tide of the fight in their favor, but he's growing worried about the fact that he's lost track of Glasstaff, one-eye, one bugbear, and at least a couple of the Redbrands. Did they flee? Are they regrouping somewhere to make a stand? Are they going to appear from one of the other tunnels soon in a surprise attack? He also doesn't know where Vidruth went, and they may need their wizard's help to free Sildar from his magical prison.
"One problem at a time," he reminds himself. They can't do anything while there are still Redbrands who are trying to kill them. He decides that Nosam and Berry can take care of their Redbrand. Hoping to surprise the one who ran for cover behind the other pillar, Marten moves just to his north and against the west wall of the chamber. He takes an arrow in hand and then makes a running leap across the crevasse, drawing his bow while in mid-air and luckily sighting toward his left. Just before he lands on the other side next to Sildar, he fires the arrow at the Redbrand (R8) behind the pillar. Marten skids to a landing on the other side, grabbing onto Sildar's unmoving prison to stabilize himself. He hides against the east wall in the dim lighting, trying to blend in with Sildar's shadow.
Movement: 25', ending at J/K 11 G12 > G11 > H11 (jumping 5') > I11 (jumping 10') > J11 > K11 Action: Attack R8, Shortbow (80/320): w/ Adv (Hiding: 17): 20 (in game log), Damage: 13 piercing (in game log, 7 bow + 6 sneak attack) w/o Adv: 20 (in game log), Damage: 7 piercing (in game log), sneak attack does not apply w/o advantage Bonus Action: Cunning Action, Hide - Stealth27 Free Action: Drawing an arrow
Vidruth: carefully pours a single drop from the blue vial into the first vial… / if given permission to do so, runs back up the stairs
Berry: In swift flight, he arrives next to Nosam (I9) / (vs. R11: grapple DC 11). He fully intends to lift his victim up 5 feet and over the crevasse. Holding him there he wants to lock eyes with him before slowly letting go.
Marten: Movement: 25', ending at J/K 11 / Attack R8, Shortbow (80/320): w/ Adv (Hiding: 17): 20 (in game log), Damage: 13 piercing / Hide - Stealth 27
Vidruth must hold his action until One-eye’s turn.
Berry flits across the void and grabs the Redbrand, lifts him over his head, but the ruffian shifts his weight unexpectedly and, his cloak ripping, rolls back to his feet. Only a patch of red fabric is left in Berry’s hand. (contested roll: STR 17 / Berry’s grapple fails)
Nosam’s hammer strikes at the Redbrand as he tries to regain his balance, but his short sword whips up, parrying the blow.
Marten, in mid-air, releases his arrow, and it plummets into Redbrand 8’s eye as he peeks around the column. He crumples, dying where he falls.
Redbrand 11 strikes once at Berry and once at Nosam, grunting with every jab, his eyes wild. Nosam: 21 for 6HP / Berry 13 for 3HP.
Sildar remains trapped in the crystalline pillar. Even though Marten is standing directly in front of him and can see him clearly through the magical crystal, Sildar does not seem able to see Marten. He pounds on the eerie wall between them, with no effect, and no sound.
Berry: "How? Daphyra doesn't move! Nosam!"
Sister Garaele, responding to Berry’s shout, enters the cavern cautiously, looking at Berry and trying to see what he sees. Her hand comes up to her mouth in horror when her glance falls on both Daphyra’s and Kiselina’s fallen figures.
Crissie remains in her prior position, crossbow locked and loaded and ready to fire.
One-eye adds a drop of its potion into the same vial that Vidruth does, simultaneously. There seems to be no result. Then with surprising suddenness, the contents of the bubble churn frothily, overflow hugely, and explode. Vidruth raises his arm and closes his eyes, turning away instinctively to protect himself, but… the explosion doesn’t hurt him. When he opens his eyes, he sees that the top half of one-eye is missing. All he sees are its legs, its hips, then, as if a sword had cut him in half, viscera. But… the top half of its body is gone. A moment later, Vidruth notices that he can’t see his own arm. Nor can he see his other arm. In fact, the entire top half of his body is gone. All he can see are his legs, his hips, and his belt. Everything above that is just… gone.
“That’s better,” says one-eye’s voice, from a spot where its mouth should be, but there is nothing. “He is getting there.” (Yes, a potion of invisibility gone awry!)
Crissie’s crossbow twangs! A bolt shoots straight across the chamber to splinter against the north wall. Marten cannot see why. Berry and Nosam: Glasstaff rushed across the treasure chamber from west to east. Crissie yells, “Flock it!! I got him! But that spell turned my bolt away!”
"i will return" vidruth promises, then runs up the stairs, stepping out, and preparing to blast the redbrand berry and nosam are fighting "im sorry" he apologizes grimly

"Marten, the wizard is on the run and tries to escape! He went out the tunnel you've found! You think you can get him?"Berry asks over is shoulder to Marten as he sees Glasstaff rush through the storage space towards the door through which the redbrands came flooding in. He tries again to pull the foe over the edge towards him and into eerie chasm. If he manages to dispose the man, he plans to rush towards the southern-eastern exit to intercept the wizard. He's trying to recall the map that the imprisoned redbrands had drawn, and he thinks that the manor exit should be that direction - and prisoners. 'Could it be that the wizard heads to the prisoners? Perhaps to take a hostage?', he wonders
Action: Grapple, Athletics DC 21 Move: if his grapple succeed he'll move over the crevasse with redbrand in tow (5 feet doubled as per grappling), then he rushes towards the SE exit
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Marten feels good about his current hiding spot, and he was hoping that he would see another target from this spot. When he hears Crissie, Marten thinks that maybe he'll get a shot at the wizard at the north end of the chamber again. But then Berry warns him about the wizard escaping through the tunnel through that secret door in the alcove of the treasure chamber.
Ever since the Redbrands surrounded him in that chamber, Marten knew that there had to be a route from the southeast tunnel that led back around to the secret door in the alcove of the treasure chamber. But another thought had been tickling the back of his brain, something about the map that their captives at the Inn had helped them sketch. They had said that there was a stairway down from the burnt-out manor to a cistern room. The cistern room had a secret door which lead into this chamber with the one-eyed monster. But that meant Glasstaff was heading toward an exit!
Marten gives up his hiding spot and says, "I'll try t' cut 'im off, but I'll need help t' stop a wizard." But then he's already off and running toward the southeast tunnel to try to catch a wizard.
(OOC: I'm not sure how far Marten can get and whether the secret door back to the cistern room is obvious from this side. Or perhaps the Redbrands left it open in their haste? His goal is to get to the cistern room and find a spot to hide, hoping to surprise the wizard when he enters that room. If he cannot move far enough into the cistern room to hide, he'll try to get the secret door open and then hide in the tunnel at Q16 until he hears the wizard enter the cistern room from the other direction.)
Movement: Up to 60' dashing, hopefully ending in the cistern room. J11 > J12 > J13 > K14 > L14 > M14 > M15 > M16 > N16 > O16 > P16 > Q16 > R16? Action: dash Bonus Action: Cunning Action, Hide - Stealth25 (if possible) Free Action: Talking, opening the secret door (if it's visible and not already open)
Vidruth: (dash H6) "i will return" vidruth promises,
Berry: Grapple, Athletics DC 21
Move: if his grapple succeed he'll move over the crevasse with redbrand in tow (5 feet doubled as per grappling), then he rushes towards the SE exit
Marten: Movement: Up to 60' dashing, hopefully ending in the cistern room/ Hide - Stealth26 (if possible) / opening the secret door.
Nosam clips the Redbrand’s nose, which though not a fatal wound, is painful and blood splatters agains the cavern wall.
Berry then moves in and (11) lifts the. Drops the man, struggling, into the crevasse. He twists, tries to grab a ledge (Nat 1) but only succeeds in cracking his head against the edge of the wood bridge. He falls, already unconscious, and both legs break under him in bloody compound fractures.
When he leaves, Vidruth feels One-eye’s shriveling glare, but only for a moment, as the creature remains where it is while Vidruth bolts upstairs, tripping with every other step because he now can’t see his feet — or any other part of himself. He is completely invisible for the moment, in fact.
Marten finds the door, but is unable to step through or hide. For, the moment he opens the door, two Redbrands who had left the crevasse chamber earlier are now waiting on the other side of the door with readied attacks. They stab at him with their short swords (10, 18). One hits for 6+2=8HP. (These are their reactions from Round 14.)
Redbrands 4 and 12 now take their Round 15 actions, each attacking Marten twice. 6, 23, 6, 18. Two hits for 1+2=3HP, 1+2=3HP (6HP total). One of them then closes the door. Marten hears scuffling and shouting after the door is closed.
Redbrand 15 moans and hiccups from the bottom of the crevasse.
Sildar breaks free of Glasstaff’s spell! The arcane crystal shatters, dissipating into nothing, and he yells, “By Bellabranta’s sword!! May all magics be banned from Faerun!!,” and, dodging, works his way north toward Glasstaff’s last position. “Zounds!,” he yells as he steps over Daphyra’s motionless form, looking to Sister Garaele.
Sister Garaele rushes ahead, but before crossing the bridge to Daphyra, finds Kiselina’s motionless body. “Oh no!,” she gasps, squatting down in her priest’s garb to check on him, though he is covered in blood. She does not see Vidruth, though he is directly in front of her. “Oh no!,” she repeats, laying her hand on Kiselina’s breast and saying a heated prayer.
Crissie backs into the entrance tunnel, reloading her crossbow and with wild eyes, though hopeful, scanning the room and ready to release a bolt at any new assailants that come into view.
Marten is encouraged that Sildar and Sister Garaele have turned the tide of the fight in their favor, but he's growing worried about the fact that he's lost track of Glasstaff, one-eye, one bugbear, and at least a couple of the Redbrands
(OOC: Well, I guess Marten at least figured out where those couple of Redbrands were hiding!)
Marten finds the door, but is unable to step through or hide. Marten is surprised to see the two Redbrands who he thought were still hiding in the northern chamber hiding right beside this door. He takes a short sword right to the gut and cries out for help, "Ah! Berry! A couple o' Redbrands!"
He tries to dodge the onslaught of stabbing swords, but in a narrow hallway with nowhere to hide, it's too much. As he hears the secret door closing again, he tries to shout a warning o Berry, "Through the door t' th' Cistern room!", but he's not sure whether he said it loudly enough for Berry to hear him. Marten slumps to the floor and loses consciousness again.
(OOC: Marten was at 14 HP, so he's now back to 0.)
"Marten's in trouble!" he shouts out. "Would you would follow me?" he asks in Crissie's direction but realises that he doesn't recognise her as someone he should know but the enemy of our enemy must be our friend. He dashes after Marten fingering for the healing potion that he took out of Vidruth's chest and holds it out to Marten, though he realises that he appears to be unresponsive. "Marten,"he slightly shakes him and prods him with the potion.
"very well" vidruth says, hopefully it being busy will at least keep it out of the fight, as the redbrand slips down at his feet he snaps his hand out, launching a bolt of flame at the new arrival, but misses as the redbrand bumps into his leg

Marten: Round 13
Movement: 20', ending at F12 pressed up against the pillar
G13 > H13 > G13 > F13 > F12
Action: Attack R7, Shortbow (80/320): 21 (in game log) Damage: 9 piercing (in game log, 8 bow + 1 sneak attack)
The result is the same w/ and w/o advantage because the first attack roll was higher (16, 9)+5 and sneak attack damage applies w/o advantage because Berry is within 5' of R7.
Bonus Action: Cunning Action, Hide - Stealth 17
Free Action: Drawing an arrow, Talking
Nosam is surprised to see the numbers thinning out. Losing a couple of his friends was bad, but he expected the situation to continue getting worse. "Afraid I don't see the bugbear either!" While responding to Marten, Nosam swings his hammer yet again. "There's just a neverending supply of 'em."
Attack R11 with hammer. Hit- 6 (1+5), Damage- 11 (8+3)
Ugh! Reading the thread this morning, I realize that I had intended Marten to attempt to kill R7 before he could attack Berry again by using a "sharpshooter" attack for +10 damage, but I completely forgot to put that in the original post. 😭
If it's not too late, that would change the attack to:
Action: Attack R7, Shortbow (80/320): 16 (21 in game log, -5 for sharpshooter attack) Damage: 19 (in game log, 8 bow + 1 sneak attack + 10 sharpshooter bonus damage)
The result is the same w/ and w/o advantage because the first attack roll was higher (16, 9)+5 and sneak attack damage applies w/o advantage because Berry is within 5' of R7.

She doesn’t fire at R11 through Nosam, but waits for a clear shot.

vidruth seems indecisive, glancing back up the stairs, then agrees "very well, but we must hurry, my group is still in danger" he carefully pours a single drop from the blue vial into the first vial, waiting for one-eye's signal to do so, then steps back, returning the blue vial to its stand "i need to go help now" he says, and if given permission to do so, runs back up the stairs
This Mug immediately shared with me a transcendental tale of an Infinite Mug that anchors the Universe and keeps it from folding in on itself. I filed this report under "illogical nonsense" and asked why its sign is in Times New Roman font, when it is basic knowledge that Arial Black is a far superior font. I wondered: How did this mug even get past the assembly line with its theistic beliefs and poor font choices?

"Marten, the wizard is on the run and tries to escape! He went out the tunnel you've found! You think you can get him?" Berry asks over is shoulder to Marten as he sees Glasstaff rush through the storage space towards the door through which the redbrands came flooding in.

(OOC: Well, I guess Marten at least figured out where those couple of Redbrands were hiding!)

"Marten," he slightly shakes him and prods him with the potion.
