Starker:”Let me try to Identify the magic whose presence I faintly detect on the small chest, though it only will work if it is something I can touch. I can also attempt to Knock it open if I am still alive and on this Plane after I have touched it.”
Starker and Cyrus begin the ritual you’ve seen several times, now. Indeed, you’ve seen it often enough to notice that it varies a big each time. For instance, 2/3 of the way through, Starker mutters to Cyrus “not the mauve glass fragment, but the indigo, please. It is only 70% brillig and the slithy toves have not yet approached the wabe this season.”
Once Starker completes his incantations, Kragen picks up the jar with a dead illithid tadpole floating in preserving chemicals. Looking at it oddly and cringing. Then looks to Starker.
"Mage Starker, i find it coincidental and quite amusing that a previous victim of that foul beast had the same propensity and interest for Illithid's that you do?!" Smirks then places it back onto the hoard gently.
Starker examines the wooden box. The lid hinges open to reveal a delicate set of eyewear. Casting Identify, Starker learns that they are Eyes of the Eagle.
Kragen to The Company, as he is placing the potions into his backpack. "Shall we leave this lot for later and continue on with cleansing this place of evil?"
Assuming there is no oppositions, gestures to Hoid and Chadwick to continue
(Eyes of the Eagle: legacy requires attunement, 2024 does not. If these are legacy rules, they may as well be left behind. If 2024 rules, someone should put them on.)
You have now spent several hours inside the mountain. There have been many crashing wave episodes, but, none of the spine tingling wails have occurred.
The intrepid group of Hero’s, leaving their spoils to return later, continues to clear this level heading southeast and then around the atrium until returning back to the elevator.
if some nefarious agent of evil presents itself, we kill it quite spectacularly and then continue on.
The Company leaves behind the pile, pile, of coins and valuable items that was the apparent hoard of the shadow dragon. You proceed around the wheel of this level to find the elevator mechanism you expect to on the opposite side from the other one. The platform is not here.
After moving around to the 9-o'clock position you find something new. There are several large wheels mounted to the wall of the cavern. They appear similar to those on the elevator that are used to raise and lower the platform.
Otherwise, it is more of the rotted and dried out vegetation seen along the inner circle and outer circle divided by the stone path.
Starker is puzzled by the set of large wheels. “I wonder what they control.” He investigates (roll = 19) the area around the wheels. Are there any labels, signs, pictograms of similar documentation? If not, he tries to move the leftmost one, first one way, then the opposite (str check 14). If the wheel moves, he listens for sounds and looks for sights to see if there is any discernible effect. If the wheel doesn’t move he tries the one to its right (str check 5). If either fails to move he will say: “Friends Chadwick and Hoid: it may be that I am too weak to persuade this/these wheel/s to move. Would you care to add your force to my argument?”

Hoid will take the small key. Better to have it along in case we find the lock.
Hoid will try Craddick’s key on the chest. Rolled 5, so shouldn’t have worked.
I believe it was indicated that the Key fits the chest?
"I am detecting slight hint of magic with the chest, could be protective magic?? Maybe a trap?"
Hood’s attempt to open the chest with Craddock’s Key is unsuccessful.
In my haste, I misread the post about the key. Hoid will use the key on the chest.

<identify and, if not counterindicated, knock>

Hoid uses the small key and opens the iron chest. Within is a pike of platinum coins and a small wooden case with a hinged lid.
(( Overlapping posts, so moving slowly. ))
Starker:”Would that it were alive! Only think of the advantages of having an illithid spider monkey familiar!”
<Starker will do what I wrote above, but on the small wooden chest instead of the chest-containing chest.>
Pike=pile, or do I need to read the dictionary?
Starker examines the wooden box. The lid hinges open to reveal a delicate set of eyewear. Casting Identify, Starker learns that they are Eyes of the Eagle.
A pile. Of gold. Sorry for the miscommunication.
Looking at the contents of the chest, Hoid estimates 1,294gp are within.

(Link was to legacy version, resulting in my question.)
Hoid grabs the spectacles, puts them on Kragen and says, “Don’t worry, we won’t make fun of the way they make you look.”
