Starker begins to tinker with the wheels set into the wall. There are 9 of them in total. There are no diagrams or labels on any of them. He turns the leftmost one and there is a creaking and grating noise that comes from high above. Nothing seems to happen following that. He is unable to move the next one to the right.
Starker:”Thank you, my mighty-thewed friend. Would you mind continuing with the other seven whilst I walk about to see if I can aurally triangulate the impacts?”
If Chadwick is kind enough to msnipulate the wheels, Starker will try to move to where he can see some of the platforms on this or other levels. Do they move? Does the location of thr sounds become more apparent?
”Friend Kragan, perhaps your newly eagled eyes can perceive something that remains hidden from my intellect?”
Chadwick moves to the third wheel and gives it a heave. (STR check = 18). It is resistant at first, but then gives and turns with a squeal and what sounds like more rattling of chains from up above. There is a loud Creaking-Groan of metal sliding against metal that has not moved for a long time prior to this and several beams of light spring from the ceiling down through the center of the tier you are standing. All of the tier is now dimly illuminated. Several plumes of dust and debris can be seen to be wafting down from above through the rays of sunlight coming into the mountain for the first time in over a century.
“Well done Mage Starker, you have discovered the skylight. Many Dwarven towns are outfitted with these types of mechanics. Dwarves still require sunlight to grow food.”
”apologize, I should have mentioned that earlier. I was too busy looking at all the wonderful things I can now see with these wonderful glasses.”
Starker:”Pray continue, Brother Lightbringer! The continuity of some of the chain systems might have been compromised by the entropic ravages of time, but others might be continuous sources of illumination!!!”

“Yes, please continue Sir Chadwick, the light will do this place good!”
Chadwick persists in his turning of the wheels. Of the nine, three seem operational and provide light into the mountain. The other two seem focused on the periphery of this tier rather than straight down the center.
Once Chadwick finishes, The Company heads for the elevator.
”shall we head for the lower level with the river and the docks? Or should we clear the main level first so the Stonejaws can get to the forge and clear the dragons hoard.”

”shall we head for the lower level with the river and the docks? Or should we clear the main level first so the Stonejaws can get to the forge and clear the dragons hoard.”
Gneuman turns his head as if listening. " Good point." He wispers. "Ajax questions the wisdom of trusting outsiders, as he calls them, to gather and assess the riches we found."
The company (unless anyone objects) will use the elevator and travel to the next lower level (from our location). The intent here is to clear each level sequentially through to the mine level with the under-mountain river and docks.
If we encounter something interesting, we investigate thoroughly.
If we encounter nefarious evil that still persists, we smite it spectacularly as we have done to date.
The light now entering the mountain through the opened louvres high above gives dim illumination to the top three levels. You are able to see the amount of decay and destruction that has occurred through the years here after the fall of the Brighthammers. It is sad to be witness to, but, also shows the hope held by the Stonejaw brothers in reviving this dwarven place of community. No further encounters are had as you traipse about through the rubble and debris. You do see a few flocks of what you believe are the strikes you encountered earlier. They all leave you alone for the most part.
The descent into the mines is uneventful. There are still the small insects and little creatures that scamper away from you at the edge of your illumination. One tunnel has what appears to be a crudely assembled deadfall trap rigged to collapse the ceiling if you hit any of the trip wires strung across the floor. These are easily avoidable. Nothing else of interest is present. The dwarven ghosts seen in the central chamber do not reappear.
The docks are quiet. There have been regularly occurring waves crashing across the underwater jetty during your most recent foray, just like before. Nothing else seems to be moving when you arrive to the docks. The feeling of dread and back of your neck hair raising fear is no longer present. But, something unsettling persists.
It seems the only places left to investigate are the broken magic circle and the body of water. I suspect Starker is best to lead the investigation of the circle. Tackling that first seems the best course of action because water will provide challenges navigating.
However, Gneuman and Kragen could explore the cavern ceiling to understand the extent of the cavern and, perhaps, what is causing the wave.
When the time is right (assuming magic circle first), Kragen is reluctantly willing to use his newly acquired capabilities to scale the cavern wall and walk horizontally (upside down of course) across the cavern ceiling. He secures all his items and drops his backpack next to Hoid before doing so. However Cousin may be more adapt at this than Kragen.

Chadwick will try to turn it: strength check 14
Chadwick is able to turn the second wheel from the left. More grating noises from above and what may be the clinking of chains? No further effect.

(I'm a little later to the conversation, but Gneuman will volunteer his Gnome expertise in anything gears or tinkering if needed.)
Kragen frowns heavily at Hoid however allows him to put the spectacles on his person.
”funny, Brother!!” Then commences at looking around the atrium hoping to see something new.

The entrance level, lower level and mine are not fully explored.
Starker:”May I offer a friendly amendment? Rather than refer to it as the dragon’s hoard I suggest we refer to it as our hoard.”
Gneuman turns his head as if listening. " Good point." He wispers. "Ajax questions the wisdom of trusting outsiders, as he calls them, to gather and assess the riches we found."
"....and he really likes that peridot, too."
