"That said, Mr. Utar."Doozey quickly steps up to say. "Mayhaps it would be wiser all the same to take at least some of Mr. Serelis' advice, and at the very least refrain from wantonly speaking her name-" He turns to pointedly to look at Serelis. "'specially in this place... and these woods, I suppose. Least we let slip that might draw her ire, as she no doubt has some pretty sharp ears, eh?"
With that said, Doozey continued to watch the elven ranger closely, seeking any signs of either blanket confusion or perhaps something akin to wariness in the elfs response. All while Biscuit continued to happily lap up his drink, seeming to savor ever moment.
In the latter case, he nods sagely before fishing out some scrap paper and charcoal writing utensils, scratches down a quick note, then passes it to Serelist. But in the former, he simples chuckles and tries to brush off the moment by simply saying, "Call me Paranoid, t'is all."Regardless of what he picks up next, the halfling at least carried on by saying aloud, "This might be a weird question, Mr. Serelis, but besides the common tongue I don't suppose ya picked up a few others have ya?"

With Utar's mention of the note and the sigil, she takes out the note and the sigil that was stabbed into Rerk and presents them, "Am I right in supposing you know of the note already? It was essentially Kabel's Hill begging the fey forgiveness for entering the forest. This sigil pin was stabbed into the poor man and the villagers identified it as belonging to Jeny. Is that accurate?"
"A sigil?" Serelis asks of Utar. "As in a recognizable symbol one might use as a signature? I do not know the hag to use such marks. She is fond of small black stones, though. Is that what you mean? Do you have proof?"Before Utar can respond, Doozey intervenes. Serelis nods in agreement with the halfling's suggestion of refraining to use her name. When a note is passed to Serelis asking what other languages he might know, he responds in writing: "I know the Elvish tongue." From then on, Serelis continues the discussion either in writing or in spoken Elvish, never using Jeny's name directly again
@Doozey:
Serelis is obviously afraid of Jeny Greenteeth. Your suggestion does not seem to elicit a specific note of recognition on the half-elf's face, but it seems like a good suggestion nonetheless, so he continues the discussion either in writing or in spoken Elvish, never using Jeny's name directly again.
It is then that Neya produces the note. Serelis reads it attentively and then out loud: "Kabel’s Hill honors the long-standing truce between the people of Phlan and the people of the Quivering Forest. We seek only to retrieve a lost friend who does not fully understand what his trespasses signify." He gives it a moment to see if his reading means anything extra to his visitors, before agreeing with Neya's statement: "Yes, this was not written by the one we speak of, but by the folks of Kabel's Hill. I see no sigil in these notes, however." When Neya then produces the pin that was used to stab the notes to Rerk's torso, Serelis recognizes the black stone decorating it and jumps backward out of his chair. "You brought something of her in here? You look like experienced adventurers; I would have assumed you know better than to take a gift from a hag."
Sill holding the pin in her hands, Neya is reminded of the faint tingle of divination magic she had first identified on the pin. "Quick," Serelis almost shouts. "Get rid of it!" The smell Doozey felt a moment ago is even stronger now.
"The Bag! Either there or out in the forest, but do as he says. I smell something getting closer, and I don't think it means us well!"Doozey directs before racing to the door, ready to open it quick should Neya thoughts thus spur her so. Biscuit hops out of his seat as well. But, without knew where or what form the threat was coming from, the mastiff could do nothing but ready himself to fight.

Utar sits and watches as the rest of the party effortlessly switches to Elvish. It isn't a new experience for a half-orc, folks switching language to keep him out of the loop. Happened as a kid, happened when he ran with the horde until he mastered Orcish, happened when he switched sides and joined up with Aleyd Burrall, even happened when he entered the priesthood.
If he was younger, if he hasn't have travelled as far as he had with Doozey and Neya, he might have bristled at the slight. Instead, Utar sat and listened to the others spout out an almost musical set of words, like the sound water makes running down a babbling brook.
Watching Doozey suddenly jump into action, pulling open the cabin door sets Utar in edge, and in common he says, "We don't all speak Elvish. Want to clue me in fast?"
(@MB: What a nice RP little bit. DM Inspiration Token for you!)
Doozey is the first to react once Serelis points out the foolishness of CRAP's actions. Opening the front door, the halfling urges Neya to dispose of the hag's pin, but the human warrior chooses to instead place the item within her pocket dimension. As the party gets ready for the worst, Denae rises and joins Doozey by the entrance. Switching back to Common, the female half-elf shuts the front door and explains: "It doesn't hurt to put a layer of protection between us and whatever is approaching while we prepare." She then turns to Utar and, responding to his plea, summarizes: "Chances are that bringing the hag's pin along wasn't the best of ideas. She might have sent something to say hello if Mr. Badger's nose is to be trusted, and even I have learned to not doubt it."
Whatever time Denae buys the party by shutting the front door is not much, but, together with Doozey's sniffing and Neya's general alertness, it might just have given CRAP an extra moment to reach for their weapons (the party is not surprised). Bang! The door to Serelis's cabin shudders as something slams into it. It happens again a heartbeat later and the door bursts from its hinges, falling flat to the floor. A man-sized pile of straw and burlap stands in the doorway, a jagged tear across its face twisted in a malevolent sneer. Almost at the same time, the windows of the cabin explode in a shower of glass as masses of writhing vines and thorns creep into the cabin, coalescing into vaguely humanoid shapes. Serelis recognizes the straw-man and his sidekicks, though his face is one of disbelief: "My garden's scarecrow... My plants..."
Serelis stands up from his seat {I-20} and reaches for his hand crossbow. "My windows!" He aims his pre-loaded bolt at a nearby plant monster and shoots. Quickly reloading his weapon, Serelis fires a second bolt against the same creature:
-> Hand Crossbow vs. Pointy Plant {D-26}: Attack: 9 Damage: 3
-> Hand Crossbow vs. Pointy Plant {D-26}: Attack: 8 Damage: 6
Still distraught about the damage to his cabin, Serelis's shooting arm proves to be quite shaky. The projectiles penetrate the wood logs forming the far wall instead of his quarry.
The scarecrow languidly approaches Doozey {T-22} and allows its face to take a nightmarish form:
-> Doozey's WIS saving throw {DC 13; Brave, Halfling Luck}:20
Although the halfling ranger's resolute mind protects him from the scarecrow's childish approach to frightening its prey, Doozey still feels the warmth of his own blood come down his temple. (Doozey takes 19 slashing damage.)
Doozey' tried to tried to catch the claws on his Buckler and turn them aside, only -- if only for the briefest of moments -- the supernatural fear instilled by the scarecrow's transformation proved enough to weaken the stoutling's defenses. Yet a pained outcry turned abruptly into a bestial growl as the stoutling shifts into his more menacing badger form, rights his stance, and then spat out creature, "You'll have to do a lot better than that, for I've seen scary faces in Ms. Neya's cooking!" His words are swiftly accompanied by a glint of metal as Apostle sings through the air, threatening to take the scarecrows legs out from under it!
Then in using the momentum from the slash, Doozey weaves around the creature all the same, placing himself between it and its vegetation based friend before following through with a second strike. "I have these two. Aid the others."He demands of Denae, before with a sharp series of Sylvan words, spurs Biscuit to rush to the eastern half of the room, hop on the bed, and try to hold his ground against the invaders by the window with threatening baying and snapping of jaws.
Bonus Action(Doozey): Enter Hybrid Form.
Action(Doozey): Deadly Carving at Scarecrow! (Melee, Lethal)Apostle - Attack #1: 18 Damage: 8 of magical slashing. (Melee, Lethal)Apostle - Attack #2: 19 Damage: 11 of magical slashing. (The 1st attack to hit will also mark the scarecrow as Doozey's Favored Foe, dealing an additional 5 (Plus 6 if also a crit)).
A brief moment of fear is enough for Doozey to miss his opportunity to catch the scarecrow's claws on his buckler, but the hunter is just getting started. He jumps on the opportunity to retaliate against his foe after taking a couple of seconds to assume a more bestial form (Hybrid Form). Magical blade in hand, Doozey then begins carving pieces of hay out of the marked animated construct (Favored Foe) in front of him. (Scarecrow takes 24 magical slashing damage.)
As the halfling moves forward, he shouts tactical commands to both Biscuit and Denae. Reacting almost as obediently as the mastiff, the female ranger turns to face other enemies. By then, Biscuit has already engaged the foes invading Serelis's bedroom.
The animated plants, who have by now assumed a more humanoid form, finally get enough purchase within the house to start growing roots. The vines on the four larger ones begin to grow unnaturally fast, in a down and outward direction, quickly taking over most of the house:
STR saving throw {DC 12} all around:
Utar: 6
Doozey (Land's Stride):21
Biscuit (Primal Bond):24
Neya: 23
Denae: 6
Note: Viny Plants (lime green; x4) have moved a bit. They now occupy {F-23}, {N-28}, {O-19}, and {U-20}.
(@Ori: Biscuit can perform an opportunity attack against the Viny Plant that moved to {N-28}.)
Doozey's training in avoiding magical plant-based traps pays off. Not only that, but it also rubs off on Biscuit. Similarly, Neya is simply too quick to to be captured. The same cannot be said about Utar and Denae, who are now both restrained in place.
-> Most of the house is now considered difficult terrain caused by magical plants.
-> I forgot to roll a save for Serelis above, so I'll roll it here instead. If he fails, he also becomes restrained. Here it is: 10
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Hoping to buy himself some time to free himself later, Utar decides to bring the noise instead. Calling out to the third ranger, Ilim, Burga and Abet materialise out of the ether, ready for a scrap.
"Hope you don't mind a few more guests, Serelis! They're good people!"
Then to his comrades, and to try and set the half-elven ranger's concerns aside.
"Drive these plants back! And uh, let's try to keep collateral damage to a minimum please."
(OOC DC17 Wis save for all within 15ft or they take 10 radiant damage, half damage on a save.)
