Room to the South (past the locked door) Glittering minerals in the ceiling of this large cavern catch the light and send it back to create the impression of a starry night sky. Dozens of skeletons-many crushed under fallen debris-are scattered across the floor. The cave is large enough that it contains two freestanding structures. Each of these stone buildings is proportioned for human use, as opposed to the dwarf-sized doorways and furnishings you've seen elsewhere in the mines. Both structures have battered and blackened masonry walls, their double doors cracked and scorched. The cavern is divided by an escarpment, into which a flight of stairs has been cut. Passages lead out of this area to the north, south, and west.
The door leading East is cracked, iron hinges partially melted. Wrenching or smashing open this requires a successful DC 15 Strength check. Jyin Strength Check with help (adv) 16, follow-up check 18
Behind the locked door Dust, ash, walls blackened by fire, and heaps of debris beneath the sagging ceiling show that this room was damaged by a destructive blast. The furnishings-tables, chairs, bookshelves, beds-are charred or splintered, but otherwise well preserved. A scorched iron chest stands near the foot of one of the beds
This room contains the restless spirit of the last wizard to die here: Mormesk the wraith. He rises up out of the floor. "Your presence is offensive to me, your life forfeit. My treasures are mine alone, not yours to plunder!"

Jyin says, "Hold on one min, I can get this. I think It's loosening up." Bang, Bang, Bang, Bang, loudly forcing the door open...

OOC: Nothing like a little stealth entrance there, Jyin! ;-)
The room's spectral inhabitant coalesced from the floor, a swirling mass of necrotic energy taking the form of a robed figure. Recognition flared in Daewen's eyes, replaced instantly by a cold fury. This wasn't a mindless zombie, but a wraith – a cunning and potentially powerful foe. Without wasting a single breath, Daewen dropped into a battle crouch, her rapiers held high, their points reflecting the otherworldly glow emanating from the wraith. She wouldn't stand still and be a target. Her movements would be a blur of practiced evasion, constantly circling the wraith and seeking an opening to strike at its incorporeal form. This wasn't a fight fueled by rage, but by a cold, tactical precision born from years of battling beings of shadow.
OOC: No action other than swirling the room, ready to strike at a moments notice.
"Your presence is offensive to me, your life forfeit. My treasures are mine alone, not yours to plunder!"
Jyin draws his longsword and advances but stops for a moment to think. "Hey you. Ghost. Are you talking to us? I mean, ghosts don't say things and just float there waiting for a reply. Why aren't you attacking?"
"I am Mormesk. I was once a most powerful Mage. That was a long time ago. My treasure is sacred to me and you cannot have it."
He stops mid-sentence to look at Wilhorn. "You have the look of a Mage, about you. Have you any powerful spell scrolls?"
“Your treasure is ash, your purpose is finished. Your reward is in the next life. Now be gone. This mine is being reclaimed by the living.”
"How astute. All that I collected in life in gone, save my favorite thing in all this world. My precious platinum pipe, a gift from the only woman, that I ever loved, her face a faded memory. I have no need for the riches and treasures in that burnt box over there..." He points to a scorched treasure chest. "...save my pipe. Open it, take a look. I shall let you live if you do me a favor. A foul magic creature occupies the Spell Forge, killing the ghouls at my command. I am powerless to approach, but it must be eliminated. Take everything in that chest, leave my pipe and kill that cursed creature, I beg."
The treasure chest is closed but not locked. If opened, there is a wooden pipe adorned with platinum filigree (150 gp), diamonds (300 gp), coins: 50 ep, 160 sp, 1100 cp and a treasure map (leading to a 5th level Dungeon Campaign, "This old map can lead them to their next adventure"). On the walls of this room are tomes and books, all preserved, listing detailed histories, some books are 1000 years old, the tomes in this study are a different kind of treasure unto itself.

Daewen listened intently as the wraith spoke, her expression a mask of icy skepticism. Her gaze flickered between the wraith, the scorched chest, and her companions. A silent hand gesture signaled a question to her party – "What do you think?" While maintaining her defensive stance, she subtly shifted, her eyes scanning the room for any hidden dangers (Perception: 11). This was a gamble, and Daewen needed to weigh the potential reward against the wraith's duplicity. Could they trust this spectral entity, or was this simply a ploy to lure them closer for some nefarious purpose? Only time, and a careful evaluation of the situation, would tell.

Your perception check tells you that this room was once a wizard's study. It seems that it belonged to a Mage named Mormesk, as you notice his name on the spine of some of the tomes and there is the remnants of a ruined portrait with metal inlay spelling Mormesk. Either this Wraith is Mormesk the Mage or he is pretending.
OOC: It's up to you to choose to fight this wraith. He has become a self-appointed guardian of the Spell Forge. However, there is a monster guarding the Spell Forge, that has been killing undead. Mormesk has declared war on the monster but can't defeat it on his own. You can kill the monster guarding the spell forge and then kill the wraith or vice versa. Or none of the above. There are also agents of the Black Spider that you have not run into. All in all, I think there are 3-4 more combats (I could be underestimating) and the Wraith fight would be an extra combat but totally fightable. You could also get some sleep in here?
(I think we take the wraith out. Right now. I can’t see the dwarves starting up the mine again with a wraith just hanging out in here. But if you guys wanna take up his offer, he or we are gunna break the truce later anyway. Just my $0,02.)
OOC: I say we take on the wraith...although that'll be an extremely challenging fight! We're also getting close to level 5, I think? It might be swell to be level 5 when we take on the BBG at the end of this campaign. :-)
