None of them are bigger than Xaul, or all in black gear. So you settle for the one who has most scars. Unfortunately, your words don't seem to phase him, and next thing you notice, the four thugs are all surrounding you (Damros).
Initiative time: (as normal, if party is higher than thugs, you may all take your turns)
The thug Damros threatened will try and beat up Damros to teach him a lesson. The others are there just to stop him running away. He swings a mace at Damros twice. 23and 11to hit (one hit) for 5damage.
Damros staggers as the mace slams into his torso. Between the pain and his own surprise at being attacked, Damros releases the arcane energies sparking and crackling between his hands.
Crackling purple-reddish black energy leaps from his hands and slams into his attacker's chest. Agonizing Blast - to hit: 2514 pts Force damage
Damros lips thin into a smile as he looks at the others surrounding him , "Who's next?"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Xauljumps at the chance for sudden combat, nearly forgetting his noble cause and reason for being here in the first place, getting a bit too caught up in the brute disguise and persona that's still active. Getting as close to the thugs as he can without them lashing out by spotting a weak spot as he passes, and avoiding Damros and any other party members, he casts thunderwave, droplets of water sliding from his disguise and down into fists, which he then slams down onto the ground, causing a large blast. [Can every thug within a 15 feet cube of Xaul make a DC 12 Con save or take 10 thunder damage and get pushed backwards 10 feet on a failed save, taking half damage and no movement on a successful save] Then, the excess water leaps from his arm like it's got a mind of it's own, lashing out towards the closest thugs as it forms into a mighty wave, striking either one that resisted the mighty blast, or just the closest one after they all get sent flying. [Tentacle of the Deep to hit: 21, 2 cold damage on a hit and have it's speed reduced by 10 feet.]
Skyebackpedals further into the street trying to create a clear line and a little more space between her and the thugs. She targets the scarred one who seemed the least intimidated.
In breathy Auran, she uses the newest spell of her ring, summoning a thunderous Witch Bolt.
Seeing that the action has devolved into a street brawl, Sehaethas reluctantly joins in. Since the point was not to kill them, he draws a dagger and starts to approach one, intending to pummel the fellow with the handle. But Kylaski has different ideas. Speaking though his mouth, she sends Dissonant Whispers at the thug instead.
11 psychic damage and must immediately use its reaction, if available, to move as far as its speed allows away from you. DC 13 WIS save for half damage and no forced movement.
Damros hits the thug (Thug A for tracking) giving a powerful blast. Xaul then hits Thug B and Thug C. Thug C fails, thug B passes and then gets hit by a tentacle, but their armour absorbs the blow. (just missed) Skye then hits Thug A, leaving him almost dead. This is followed up by Kylaski casting a spell (I assume also on the thug who attacked), which I don't need to roll a save for. They had 4hp left, and so die.
The remaining thugs are not idiots. So they put their weapons down on the floor and (if allowed) disperse.
Xaul lets the thugs flee, thinking One of their comrades dying should hopefully be enough to scare them out of any more misdoings for now. He then approaches the halflings that were being picked on and asked 'Sorry about that. Are you alright?'
Skye looks around for any additional trouble. While Xual uses his non-warface to draw the halflings’ attention away from the sudden nature of death and the futility of mortal life in an indifferent and cruel plane, Skye turns to the other two and nods her head towards the fallen ruffian.
While guards don’t patrol regularly and field ward is a little more lawless than elsewhere in Waterdeep, it’s perhaps best not to leave a body in the Main Street. If her hands dip into any pockets and pouches that the dead man possessed once they’re moved to a side-alley and draped as if sleeping off strong ales, where’s the harm?
The thug only had a handful of coppers (14 to be exact) and nothing else of note. Their breathing (as the spell only works if they aren't dead, so I will pretend it was doing saving throws) stabilises after Damros uses his magic. The threat has been dealt with, and no one died.
Xaulgrins to see the thug be revived, and says to the party, 'Let's continue scanning around the Field Ward for a bit so we can deal with any more threats before heading back to the Temple. If we can continue dealing with them like this, I'd imagine we'd get into the good graces of the Order of the Gauntlet rather quickly!'
Damros looks to Xaul, "Are we going to have to come back daily to patrol - like the City Watch? Or, just 'appear' at odd intervals to shake things up?"
You head back to the temple, and Savra is very pleased you manged to prevent any fatalities, while scaring the thugs away. You do not need to return, as those thugs have likely learnt their lesson, and they have the threat of sending you back if things start up again. Word gets around fast in the Field Ward.
Xaulgrins very wide when he hears such high praise from Savra, and is also pleased to receive the news that they won't need to return. He's then exalted to see such a hoard of dragons be given to them as the reward for such a simple task, but keeps a straight and thankful face before graciously taking them. In a quiet area of the temple (or back at the Manor if the group prefers to head back immediately) he says 'Should be pretty simple to split this; 10 dragons each and then 10 to the group funds. Everyone happy with that?'
Skye hands back her share of ten for the inn fund. Though the return is yet uncertain, the sooner they get the guild fee paid and the inn a step closer to being renovated. 10 gold today for 20 tomorrow is the hope of every gambling sailor, with far worse odds often tolerated.
Damros notes Skye's unselfish gesture and nods to himself. He too will hand back the 10 dragons to Xaul for the 'Inn Fund'.
"I mean, we have a roof over our head, food and drink, and Xaul can talk to his Gauntlet connection for jobs... more coin to make this tavern/shop a reality."
Don't forget advantage

Damros moves next to Skye and helps her move the body into a side alley.
"Best do your pocket check fast as I will use Spare the Dying when you are done. These sorts can't learn anything if they are dead, after all."
Damros waits and then touches the thugs shoulder while speaking words most arcane.
