Xaulnods and says 'Running a business is a nice idea, but we're in no state to do it right now. However...', he strokes his stubbled chin whilst a smile appears on his face, '...I do like the idea of fighting a gold-hoarding monster, whether or not it's for tavern funds! How about we inform Master Fairkettle of our situation, ask to keep in contact, then head down to the Temple of Tyr to ask the Order of the Gauntlet if there may be any high-paying quests available?' As he says the last sentence, he realises that doing quests, especially Gauntlet ones, isn't supposed to be for the money, and it's instead to help others, but then just tells himself that by doing a high-reward quest, it will lead to the development of a tavern that will give back to the community far more than defeating some lofty hoarding beast just on it's own will.
If the party is in agreement with Xaul (which it looks like they are), he will go to Master Fairkettle, apologise for the delay, and inform him of their current conditions before asking him if he could please stay in contact with them for any future possible business arrangements once the party is in a better financial state.
Damros sighs as he goes back into the kitchen area and climbs down into 'the cellar'.
He knows there was nothing found down there but he also wanted a closer look at the underfoundation. Yes, it was cool and dry for holding barrels and casks but, were the walls secure? Was there a chance of adding additional space... for more storage or even a place to bed down?
He never had to consider all the ins and outs of a place to sleep or live or ... anything. Until his ouster from the Shadowfell, 'The Queen' provided. Now, it felt like every move made in a day cost time and money and labor... with little return. He was almost hoping Xaul and his new friends had a dragon to fight instead of sweeping floors and listening to his stomach growl.
Assuming Master Fairkettle has left, Xaulcalls after Damros as he goes and says 'When you're all finished up down there, we might as well get down to the temple soon to ask about any quests whilst it's still light.' Although the stereotypical hoarding monster is obviously a dragon, Xaul wonders whether the party could even take one down, considering their current strength, and with dragon's having such high intelligence, a mission dealing with one would not be a simple kill-the-monster, steal-the-loot ordeal. Perhaps they were more cut out for any simpler tasks with a high treasure yield and just some simpler, brutish monsters to deal with, though they'll have to wait and see what's available.
"100 gold pieces per tenday. 300 in a month, plus almost another month in start up fees. Truly, to have a successful inn, I do not think we would be able to refurbish, to source ale and wine and spirits, staff, and food stuffs, and establish these things for less than 300 gold pieces in the first month. We have no relationship with suppliers, and the guild will be well set up to prevent a cheaper option from exisiting.
"What I mean to say is, they've got us over a barrel here. We've no money to pay them, and no money to pay all those who they will encourage to charge us more than them. Perhaps we should ask about a loan from them, and perhaps a staggered system of repayment. If we can make a profit of this place, and earn money outside the inn also it might become more than self-sustaining, but this is an endeavour for many months before a return."
(I opened the tab a couple of hours ago I think, and this is meant to be before Xual's comments above, when we've gone to the back to discuss things.)
(only 10 a tenday to the guild. Plus I think it's 50 a tenday of upkeep and wages as it assumes you will hire staff so you can go off and do other things while it is open)
(only 10 a tenday to the guild. Plus I think it's 50 a tenday of upkeep and wages as it assumes you will hire staff so you can go off and do other things while it is open)
(Ohhhh that’s much much better. I thought it was 10 pieces a day).
Sehaethas reluctantly agreed, "Doing quest does seem like the only way to make money without a large upfront investment. Plus we'll need money to furnish this place for living in."
He then adds in Kylaski's voice, "Besides, quests sound more interesting than just running a business."
Xauldusts his hands together and says 'Alrighty then, looks like that's settled already, seeing as we've got a majority vote! Why don't we head down there now?' He then just promptly gets up, and eagerly strides out the door and out into the street, heading in the vague direction of the temple with little foresight on what he'll be asking when he gets there. All his mind is occupied on right now is money and monsters.
On your way to ask about more to do, a paper bird flies to Sehaethas with the following message.
“Renaer tells us you are a good bet. He bought you tickets to the opera tonight at the Lightsinger Theater in the Sea Ward. If you are interested, meet Mirt at intermission. Private Box C. Formal attire is required for admittance.”
Enclosed are tickets for the entire party to The Fall of Tiamat, an opera sung in Giant describing the evil dragon queen’s defeat at the Well of Dragons.
Alas, when you get the Halls of Justice and speak to Savra, she has nothing else for you currently, though will contact you when she does.
(ooc, each faction has one mission they can give per level. This level is all about making the contacts and doing the first missions. And then future levels they become side quests)
Xaulis disappointed to hear that there are no available missions from Savra, but is intrigued by the letter Sehaethas recieves. Granted that Sehaethas shares what's enclosed, he says cheerfully 'How lovely, I like a good show, this should be very interesting! Though, if we want to go, then it looks like we'll need to splash out some cash on a set of fine clothes each, and since the performance is this evening, we'd better get down to the tailors quick and hope they can outfit us with such short notice!' Despite the imminent 60 GP loss the party has to suffer just on clothes, Xaul seems very excited, more than you've seen him before. Something about this event seems right up his alley, and even though the opportunities within the letter don't pertain to him at all, he's looking forward to the performance and the prospect of some nicer attire, which he's been wanting for a while but never had a reason to buy until now.
[I'll have to get to work on drawing Xaul in his new style; I never actually did draw him in his plain tunic and tumbler's trousers, but since I don't imagine he'll be doing much adventuring in a top-hat and greatcoat, I might as well draw both!]
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Damros sighs again (he has been doing that alot lately) as he paces about the cellar space.
Not seeing or hearing anything unusual, he grunts as he sits on the packed earth floor and goes into a trance. Not one of his typical 'resting' trances but this time, attempting to clear his mind to speak to his 'unidentified' patron. He feels lost without some bit of direction. Yes, following these others as 'companion adventurers' feels 'right' but he knows there are missions to gain and complete -- tasks which might enhance the bond between his patron and himself.
The frustration has been the silence.
(( OOC: DDB character sheet is not letting me roll so here's trying PbP system >> Perception: 18 ))
Skye spits and rubs at one stain on the arm of her leathers. “Whats wrong with what I’ve got on?” she asks, as the others plan their outfits for the theatre.
You definitely feel alone and quiet. You have the hatch closed and it does muffle sounds quite a bit. You heard the plates smash from upstairs as it was loud. But other than occasional footsteps vibrating through the floor you can't really hear anything from the party upstairs.
You do however, find when you try to leave that the hatch has been latched shut from the outside
Damros sighed once again. 'Wasn't this just something. Locked in the wine cellar,' he thought as he rattled the hatch as best he could.
He thought about his Blessing of the Raven Queen but, remembered he had to be able to see his destination. With a shake of his head, he proceeded to call upon his Unseen Servant and hoped it could handle opening a latched hatch.
Hearing the rattle, Sehaethas comes, unlocks the hatch and then opens it. Looking at Damros below he says, "I was wondering where you were. I've got an invite to the opera, but it's a formal dress event."
[OOC: Is it just Sehaethas who's invited to the Opera, or is the entire group invited. We've been acting like it's the entire group invited, but looking at the invite, it might be just for Sehaethas]
Enclosed are tickets for the entire party to The Fall of Tiamat, an opera sung in Giant describing the evil dragon queen’s defeat at the Well of Dragons.
"Many thanks,Sehaethas. For a moment there, I was... invite? Opera? Who in their right mind goes to an opera?" Damros smiled as he said that last bit.
Climbing out of the wine cellar, he turned to lower the hatch and examine the catch. "How do you suppose this locked itself?" he muttered as he latched it closed and started dusting off cobwebs from his clothing.
