Keyleth tries to determine how difficult it would be to jump the gap in the bridge but she can't see clearly enough from the area of the gazebo to tell.
”I think you’re right, Keyleth. I don’t like the idea of being a sitting duck. How big was the tower room? Is there enough room for our entire party to engage in a fight?”
OoC: I think this question is entirely for the DM, since I don't think I got enough information to answer! Could be that trying to kite them down the stairs would be helpful? They had crossbows but they were mounted; I'm not sure if they could use them to fire inside the tower (though they probably have slings, too, being kobolds).
Replying to Faen, Keyleth says, "Well, there were openings for firing arrows through, so there was some light. Certainly the three of us would be fine," gesturing to her and Ransyl, "but I'm guessing our human friends would be able to see well enough to fight, at least at the top. Fighting in the stairway could be an issue, though."
OoC: Correct me if this is wrong, DM. I'm assuming there is at least dim lighting at the top landing.
"I don't think there's room for all of us," says Keyleth. "The three kobolds were taking up nearly all of the space up there. I think our best bet would be either to try to draw them down the stairs, or to sneak up and somehow try to disable them before they know what hit them. I can probably get close without them seeing or hearing me and get a shot off at one of them. From what we've seen, when they're hit these kobolds go down pretty quickly. I could then try to draw the other two down into your weapons," she says, gesturing at the two fighters. "Or a few of us could go up and try to get surprise attacks. The downside of course being that the more of us there are, the less likely we can remain hidden. Radagast, do you have any magic that could take out all three at once? If you can sneak up there and blast them all before they see you... How do we want to play this?"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Kirinar, who had been busy taking care of some...personal...business in the empty room, finally returns and says, "I agree that we should not leave an armed, active enemy in our rear guard area. I will lead the way up the stairs and assault the kobolds, then lead them back down here to your waiting trap! My trusty shield will protect me as I retreat down the stairs."
If agreed, he will move as quietly as he can up the tower, his shield and weapon ready! (OOC: What happens next depends on the stealth roll and what the kobolds do!)
Kirinar slowly makes his way up the stairs. He manages to stay quiet and makes it to the top and finds that the 3 kobold's are all looking out and do not see him coming.
OoC: How far is it up the stairs relative to a turn's worth of in-combat movement? How are you handling the rest of the party's actions in terms of initiative? Keyleth would like to have readied an action to fire an arrow at the first kobold she sees coming down the stairs.
The stairway leading up to the tower is a narrow set that folds back and forth on its self as is goes up (Think spiral). The tower is 30 feet in height but to move up the stairs is about 45 feet in distance. Due the stairs back and forth narrow design you could only go single file up and down the stairs and you would not be able to see past or hit anything past the first half flight.
I planned to wait for init on the rest of the party if any kobold's went downstairs as no one said they were going up with Kirinar so only Kirinar is in combat at this point.
OoC: Got it, thanks. I was thinking Kirinar would attack, then try to draw them down, and the rest of us would be ready to finish them off when they came down, but given the distance, neither Kirinar nor they could make it all the way down the stairs in a turn even if they wanted to, so there's no point in readying an action from the bottom. Is there line of sight to them from the bottom of the last (half-)flight? Keyleth may want to position herself there, if so, to back up Kirinar. If that works, can I make a stealth roll?
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
At the top of the stairs, Kirinar steps in and sees the kobolds looking outside. Seems he was able to sneak up after all! He swings his morningstar hard at the first kobold he sees and yells a battle cry! "Foul beasts, you shall perish before the wrath of the chosen ones from Mire's Edge!" Attack: 19 Damage: 5
Almost before they can react, he starts moving backwards down the stairs, his shield towards the kobolds and dodgeing their attacks as he descends. "Come on, you gut-griping naybobs! Come get me!"
Faen gives a bit of an inaudible chuckle, as she hears Kirinar taunting the creatures. She waits with anticipation, keeping an eye out for any quick movement from the Kirinar and the kobolds.
When Kirinar reaches the top he launches into an attack against the first Kobold. He crushes the creature with ease and it falls dead. The other 2 kobold's, surprised by the sudden attack, can barely turn around and see what happened. Kirinar starts to taunt them as he makes his way back down the stairway.
Both kobold's take the opportunity to attack Kirinar as he moves away. The kobold pack tactics give them advantage on the attack, but Kirinar's action of dodging negates the advantage.
Kobold 2 strikes out with a dagger and cuts Kirinar on the arm for 3 pts of damage. The other kobold misses with its dagger.
Kobold 2 then follows after Kirinar and slashes out with his dagger again (this time at disadvantage) but misses.
Kobold 3 stays at the top of the tower.
Kirinar is now 2/3rd of the way down the stairs and has two flights of approx 7.5 feet to reach the bottom but is still out of sight of everyone at the bottom of the stairs. The kobold that followed him would be out of sight of any that went up the stairs.
OoC: In case it comes up, is it possible to squeeze past an ally on the stairs as long as you don't stop in the same space, or is there not enough room for that? What about throwing/shooting/casting past an ally (and if so, do they provide some form of cover to the target)?

Due to the fact that the stairway is taking up only a 5'x5' space and so each half up or down is only 2.5' wide you would not be able to squeeze past each other. In this case shooting past an ally on the stairs will offer half cover so a +2 bonus to AC. As noted, even if one of you moves up the stairs to where Kirinar is the kobold would still be out of sight to you.

The top of the tower was only abut 10"x10" in size. It was fairly small. It had some natural light that any could fight in.

“Ready!” Preparing his greataxe at the bottom of the stairs.

Combat:
Kobold 1 (?), Kirinar (11/12), Kobold 2 (?), Kobold 3 (?)
Each of the Kobold's is surprised in the first round of combat.
Kirinar, go ahead and post 2 separate attacks, first round and second round if you want.

Ignore this if there's no line of sight down some stairs and/or if I would have needed to declare this positioning before:
As Kirinar heads up the stairs, Keyleth follows, stopping before the last half flight of stairs.
Stealth: 25
As Kirinar swings his axe at the first kobold, Keyleth fires an arrow at the second, and then runs back down.
Attack: 13 Damage: 6
I guess it's moot, so never mind!

Ransyl (12/13), Faen (10/10), Kirinar (8/12), Keyleth (9/9), Radagast (5/8), Kobold 2, Kobold 3
Keep in mind the stairs are single file only. They go up 7.5 feet then cut back. You cannot see him from the bottom.
