Seraphine glances worriedly, perhaps even a little bit angry, at Finn and remarks, “Withdraw and shoot! This thing is deadly, at any moment it can skewer one of us. It doesn’t move much, so we might get away still.”Seraphine looks around her to determine what would be her best exit route but continues to dodge for now, though she clearly plans to disengage very soon.
Even though Valerian worries about whether or not they'll be able to outrun the mantis or even hide from it, he feels even less confident in fighting it.
Holding a dagger firmly in his hand still, Valerian also disengages and moves back using his movement, making sure he doesn't go too far from his companions.
Sorry, with the edit the numbers may have gotten screwed up. Did you get a good roll? Aralin has hit the mantis with an arrow at the beginning, clearly wounding the creature. You've all just been having a bit of bad luck since then.
Serpahine glances behind her to make sure she won't trip over a root or something and starts to carefully retreat, eyeing the creature to see if it will follow her. If it does, she curses and tries to bring a larger plant half way between her and the mantis to make it more difficult for the insect to strike efficiently at her.
Action: dodge Move: move South-West, begin slowly but try to get 30 feet away if the mantis doesn't follow her (She does risk an opportunity attack but if it becomes clear that the mantis follows her she will try to get to the SWW plant and intends to get half cover by bringing the plant between her and the mantis.)
The mantis does indeed take the opportunity to lash out.
Attack: 6 Damage: 4
Then on its turn it will follow her, staying close to her, and do as it did before, taking its own dodge action as it prepares a deadly strike. It’s impossible to read expressions on its strange face with small silently moving mandibles and great globes of faceted eyes that don’t seem to focus on any one thing, but its actions make its intentions clear.
Managing to get behind a rock with Aralin, Valerian watches as the mantis strikes at his companions, showing no intention to let them run away.
Unsure of what to do, Valerian takes a few steps to place himself in front of the rock and watches carefully.
(MOVEMENT: directly up to the rock, little bit ahead of it. Holding my ACTION and the rest of my momement until the mantis moves in my direction/follows close to Seraphine)
You have to state what you’re holding the action for. It’s an if/then sort of thing.
I think it is already close to Seraphine, so that clause should be in effect during their turn. That said - and only as a reminder - it is not technically possible to ready movement and an action (in fact you can only ready an action which may be the dash action) but the DM can allow for that if it makes sense, like with an interception.
Aralin continues to use his Longbow | 11 | Damage: 10
The arrow glances off the mantis' exoskeleton, skittering away harmlessly instead of puncturing the natural armor.
Round 3
Aralin - missed with an arrow
Seraphine -
Mantis -
Valerian -
Finn -
Seraphine glances worriedly, perhaps even a little bit angry, at Finn and remarks, “Withdraw and shoot! This thing is deadly, at any moment it can skewer one of us. The mantis raises its arms and they each strike out at Seraphine, almost too quick to see
Attack: 19 Damage: 4
Attack: 6 Damage: 8
Seraphine dodges one of the arms but the other scores a slicing hit for 4 damage
Round 3
Aralin - missed with an arrow
Seraphine - dodging
Mantis - hit seraphine for 4 damage
Valerian -
Finn -
(OOC: Is Valerian within 5ft of the mantis or does he need to move to get there?)
Finn will bare his teeth and disengage, running towards the northwest away from the mantis.
Rori // Phandelver
I had Valerian further away than 5 feet
(sorry, I didn't mention before that I would be off grid all day today, but now I'm back)
Even though Valerian worries about whether or not they'll be able to outrun the mantis or even hide from it, he feels even less confident in fighting it.

Aralin is up, it’s the top of round 4
I’ll try to update the battle map later today, I’m at work presently though
Aralin continues to use his Longbow | 24 | Damage: 9
[wow! arrow hits the pot plant!]

Yeah that’s true, the mantis has followed Seraphine and looks like it wants to decapitate her and eat her.
